QUAINT VILLAGE FARMHOUSE IN BARAN, DORDOGNE PERIGORD

St Cyprien House Rental Photos and Description

House, 3 Bedrooms, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 8)

A Charming Farmhouse in a quaint rural village.

Built in the 1600s, with barn and terrace, with views of farmers fields.

Our family acquired the property in 1973. It had not been lived in for 50 years. We spent 5 loving years restoring the home. There is an outdoor bread oven attached to the house and a chicken coup we made into the bath and laundry room.

Our family is very much part of the village and surrounding towns. So, your experience here will be very authentic.

Baran is situated in the heart of the Perigord Noir between St Cyprien and Sarlat, surrounded by Bergerac, Perigeux and Les Eyzies, where many of the famous limestone caves and cliffs are home of paintings and engravings of Cro-Magnon man.

This is truly a very special part of the world.

We are a family of 5 siblings who grew up with adventurous parents introducing us to the joys of travel and history. Our mom and dad, Betty and Bob Boynton purchased this home and after spending 5 years renovating, Betty lived there for 25 years from May through October. We have had many special family celebrations here and invite you to share our love of the Dordogne!

Suki Tutthill purchased this house in 1973

My family fell in love with this area in France and couldn't leave without finding property to buy.

Our little Hamlet of Baran is so authentic, only 17 homes, yet in what we call 'the center of the universe' for pre-historic cave paintings and etchings, castles, good restaurants and we love the weather. We are close to the mountains and the oceans and 7 rivers. Every year when we start driving along the Dordogne River an undescribable feeling comes over us. And, we have yet to see everything there is to see, even after 37 years!! The best of all, the people are so friendy. We love our village and we feel so loved back.

Peaceful County setting

On our first trip to France, we stayed a week in Paris, which was lovely, then took the train to Bordeaux, rented a car and drove to "Boyntonac a Baran" where we stayed one glorious week! We are lucky to know the owners of this incredible property and everything they told us to expect about the area was spot on; the area is so full of history and things to see and do, that you could easily stay a month and never see everything. We actually started to get nervous that one week wasn't enough time, but we really were able to see the most amazing things during our visit without feeling rushed or deprived, of course we would have stayed longer if possible! This is the kind of place that you actually don't want to have a schedule of activities, this is the kind of place that if you get lost driving around, it will be your best day!! On that note, we picnicked by the river, took a boat ride on the Dordogne river, we saw numerous chateaus, toured Sarlat and the farmers markets, we had dinner at l'Esplanade in Domme overlooking the entire Dordogne valley, went to the caves, visited local artists and the list goes on!
Our most amazing night was the night we arrived and had a makeshift
dinner with things we brought with us on the train, so sausage and fromage and some pasta we found in the cabinet, followed by a walk through the neighborhood at sunset! After the hustle and bustle of the city, it was awesome!! One more thing about the house itself; it has a "feel" to it that is unmistakeable and that is a feeling of love, you feel welcomed when you come here! It's a happy home full of history and memories and we felt it from the moment we walked in, until we had to say goodbye! We three ladies loved it so much and each of us hope to return some day soon! Thank you to the family for giving us the opportunity to experience what you have all experienced for the last 50 years! Merci!

Summer 2012

When looking for a quiet place in France to spend the month writing and painting, I came across this listing. Baran is quiet and peaceful, a perfect place to open windows and doors and let the breeze blow through, and listen to the birds sing. The house is lovely and comfortable. It provides an authentic french country experience, with it's stone floors and wooden beams. The house is 400 years old and has a wonderful golden glow about it. One gets the feeling of stepping back in time. It has a fully stocked kitchen, and since it is centrally located to many street markets, we cooked dinner most evenings at the house, including local wines, bread and cheese. There is a booklet of helpful information of nearby attractions and wonderful restaurants (LaMerenda is a must)
There is a covered porch attached to the barn where one can dine or just relax, looking out onto the farmer's fields. There are pretty gardens and many paths to walk, including one to Redon Espic, a local church of legend with the most beautiful resonant sound I have ever heard. It is not to be missed. The neighbors are friendly and helpful. We had so many wonderful experiences with the local people.
Baran is close to Sarlat, a wonderful medieval town, famous for foie gras, which is always bustling with tourists, eating in it's many restaurants or shopping it's quaint shops or street markets. There are so many unique hamlets and neighboring towns that we spent several days just driving to wherever the curvy, hilly, poppy lined country roads would lead us, stopping at every brocante we found open to pick up some antique French treasures to take back home with us. We called it "getting wonderfully lost". Besides touring many of the nearby amazing castles, it was one of our favorite things about our trip to France.
Another special part of our trip was happening upon so many ancient churches, which were always open, with fresh flowers on the alters and candles always burning. There are many truly beautiful cemeteries, with their gravel paths, that we'd often stop at and look for relatives, many generations removed.
Baran is just a few hours drive through French wine country to Bordeaux. There are so many family owned vineyards, where one can stop and have a personal wine tasting right in their barns.
Of course, our month long trip to France included a few days in Paris but our time spent in and around Baran was our favorite. It truly is a special place.

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Julia for your wonderful description of your time in France and at our beloved "Boyntonac a Baran". No need to embelish what you have said. You hit the nail on the head in every way. I know our parents, Betty and Bob felt you and your family's presence and loved having you there as we did.

We spent a lovely week in the Dordogne in June 2009. This house in Baran could not be better: clean, friendly, well-located, affordable. With grandparents and a 2 year old we really appreciated the courtyard and outdoor table; the complete kitchen and huge wooden kitchen table; also the books, games and guitar left for everyone's enjoyment. The authentic stone floors, wood beams and huge fireplaces of Boyntonac transport you back a couple of hundred years. There are many walks to take in the village and surrounding countryside. We look forward to coming back soon!

We had a very enjoyable stay at Boyntonac Sept. 20-27, 2008. Baran is a quiet and charming village, very well located for visiting the Dordogne region. The home is very comfortable with a lovely garden and outdoor living area. We enjoyed the opportunity to shop on the local market days in Sarlat and St. Cyprien as we enjoy cooking.

Our stay in Baran was immensely enjoyable. The house could not be better located, and was quaint, charming and comfortable. The village is peaceful, quiet, and feels remote, yet is only minutes from the main attractions of the Dordogne. We felt so fortunate to be in the midst of such a small yet caring community, and when one of our party became ill one night, the neighbors at La Forgerie showed immense kindness in helping us get medical attention. Our bicycle rentals from Roger were top quality, and our days cycling through small country villages along the Dordogne, with castles seemingly around every bend, were the highlight of our stay.

Au coeur du périgord noir

  • 5 of 5
