2014 marks our tenth season renting out our family home. Many of our bookings are repeats, one family has stayed with us every year! Over the years we have done extensive tree cutting in order to open a great view of Lewis Bay and Nantucket Sound from both the pool area, the dining room, the upstairs bedrooms as well as the sleeping loft. You can watch the Nantucket and Martha's Vineyard Ferries leave Hyannis Harbor and again as they round the tip of Great Island and head out on Nantucket Sound. We have refurnished the living room and media room with very comfortable new sofa & side chair (not the set shown in the photos) and refurnished all three primary bedrooms as well as the finished basement and loft sleeping areas. In recent years, we redid the kitchen floor in top of the line hardwood to match the rest of the house, added a 40 inch Sony Bravia High def TV to our media room, and installed a new Jenn-Aire stove. Central Air on first floor, window units second floor. We purchased three new Samsung TV's in 2013 with HDMI connectivity.
One of our guests wrote:' We had a wonderful two weeks at your Great Island home this summer. We love the house. It's beautifully decorated and very well equipped. The neighborhood is so quiet- just the way we like it. The heated pool is just delightful. Our kids loved that room (Aerobeds in Loft). It was a great idea to add that room this year. ... The house has loads of living space, so your guests would not feel crowded. .. Thank you for sharing your home with us. Another of our guests wrote 'We had a fabulous time at your home. Thank you for opening your home to us.' On of our 2014 guests wrote: 'Thank you for sharing your wonderful shore house with us. We had an awesome time!!! The sunset last night was the most beautiful my family and I had ever seen'. The fact that five of our 2013 weeks were families that stayed with us before, three of whom have come back five or more seasons, says it all.
Our guests have come from New York, California, Chicago, Ireland, Scotland, Connecticut, Wisconsin, New Jersey, Canada, as well as every New England state.
We have sold out from late June through early September for each of the past nine seasons.
Let Great Island and our beautiful home become the highlight of your Cape Cod Summer as it has been for the Hayes family for the past 47 years.

Our family purchased this home new in 1967, it has been in the family for all of these years. We have seen Great Island grow around us, but our jewel has remained as it was, except that we have built up the gardens, continually upgraded and refinished the home, and added a swimming pool. In the off-season, it serves as a year round residence and a family retreat for our five children, the grandchildren of the original owners, as well as their children.
Our family's love for Great Island began in the 1940's when Marie Hayes would sail here from a camp in Hyannis located where the Kennedy Memorial now is. Our section of Great Island was mostly uninhabited at that time. We purchased our home in the 1960's when the land first became available. Our home was featured as the 'Home of the Week' in the Boston Sunday Globe in 1967. It was designed by John Barnard, a noted architect of the era, who designed many of the homes in Oyster Harbors in Osterville. It is a classic Royal Barry Wills styled Cape with a unique staircase based on a Whaling captain's home in Nantucket.
We have access to a large, pristine white-sand private beach on Nantucket Sound within this Gated community, accessible only by homeowners. We have access to four other beaches, three on Lewis Bay one more on Nantucket Sound
