About Kathleen Kalinowski

We are a couple with three daughters, two of whom are grown. We ski, the girls snowboard. We enjoy all the seasons in Vermont; the summer being a fantastically beautiful time though autumn gets the most press!

My husband Ed and I built this house to our exact design criteria in 2005. We wanted the house to be in the Vermont venacular style which we find so charming. Our guests are often surprised to discover that the house is new not a renovated 1890's farmhouse. We wanted a front porch, mudroom, open concept living area with gas fireplace, 2 bedrooms, a bunk room with separate lounge for guests or kids, 2 bathrooms, laundry room, sauna and air-conditioning. The house was designed for entertaining while providing room to get away to read, sleep or relax in peace. All bedrooms have TVs so everyone can be happy with their viewing. But the house is mainly intended for togetherness. There are beautiful outdoor views with French doors at both ends of the open concept area and extensive views from the bedrooms. The kids can enjoy their own 'world' if they like in the kids' apartment/bunk room with includes a lounge, mini-fridge, TV and Game Cube. All of our guests have been very happy with the set-up!

We share the house with another family on alternate weeks during ski season. This is called a '1/2 Share' which for the renting family includes all the holiday weeks, 10 total weeks. We have done this successfully since 2006. It's a great arrangement for those families that that are happy to ski/ride every other week.

Kathleen Kalinowski purchased this house in 2005

Guestbook comments from the owner

We rented this house for the whole month of August and found it perfect for our needs. The owners include everything you need to feel at home. The house is in excellent condition, clean as a whistle and thoroughly enjoyable. Large French Doors in the living room open to a covered porch that is ideal for relaxing with a cup of coffee in the morning and in the late afternoon, after a busy day, relaxing with a glass of wine and enjoying the quietness and solitude of this location. Located on a dead-end road there is no noisy thru traffic. The house is surrounded by beautiful woods, etc. Since we were staying here for an entire month we purchased bird feeders and enjoyed seeing several species of songbirds. This is one of the few houses we found that had central a/c. There were several days when the air came in handy. We know from past experience that July & August in VT can get very hot! We've been coming to VT for more than 30 yrs to get away from the summer heat in NJ. Again, this house has everything you could need including TV's in every room, a perfect downstairs bunk bed room for the kids and all the essentials you'll ever need. The owners (Kathleen & Ed) are first class and answered all our questions & needs. You can't find a better rental for Summer, Fall or Winter in Vermont. Thanks again to Kathleen & Ed for letting us use their beautiful home this summer.

We loved this rental! It had everything we needed. The house is clean, cozy and has plenty of room. We stayed for a weekend in the Fall and the surroundings were beautiful and peaceful. It is just a short drive to a very charming town. Great rental, Thank You!

Owner's Response: Thanks for the great review, Neva. Columbus Day Weekend is a wonderful time to be in Vermont. We'd love to have you back anytime and we hope you do get the chance to return.

Best rental ever!!

We rented this home for the 10 week winter 1/2 share for 2014-2015. The owners are the best! The home is set up perfect and is well stocked and organized with everything you can possibly need. The home has old Victorian charm while being newer construction so it's very warm and comfortable all winter long. There's plenty of room and the kids really liked the downstairs bunkroom. This is a short 10 minute drive to Okemo Base Lodge so it really is perfect for ski season. The only reason we're not renting it again is because we decided to purchase our own ski home this year.

Owner's Response: The 10 week half share ski season is a novel idea for many renters but we've done it successfully for ten years! It allows our guests to have their own ski house every other week, including all holdays, without committing to a full season rental. This is great for families who have other time commitments. The lower level kids' apartment has been super popular with both the kids and parents! The location is close to Singleton's General Store and literally 7 minutes from the mountain. The house is at the end of the road in a serene, quiet setting. The open concept main level is perfect for easy togetherness but each bedroom has its own TV and DVD player for times you want to spend quiet time. The set-up works great for two families with up to four children also: two bedrooms for adults, bunkroom with its own lounge for kids!

Lovely, clean, and comfortable!

Listing was very accurate; home is like-new! Very well-appointed kitchen and bathrooms; great books and magazines; sauna was a treat after climbing Mount Okemo! Kathleen was very helpful with restaurants, mountain biking ideas (Rutland has an AWESOME trail system called Pine Hill Park), and responded to questions right away. All went very smoothly. House is set at the end of a cul-de-sac; we saw two cars the whole week we were there. Very peaceful! There was a very nice Farmer's Market in Ludlow on Friday as well.

we highly recommend this house for anyone!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

What a beautiful oasis in the woods! Our family rented this beautiful, well maintained home so that we would have a place to stay this summer while visiting local family. The home was bright, spacious, and clean. It had everything we could possibly need for our time away from home. In the evening we sat on the lawn and counted shooting stars with our 5 and 7 year olds. The well equipped kitchen allowed us to sample local Vermont fruits and vegetables while cooking from home. The large table accommodated our whole family. We had some rain but were still able to visit so many places due to the great location. Our favorite excursion was to near by ButterMilk Falls. We hope to rent this home again whenever we are up visiting our family. What a wonderfully relaxing week!

Owner's Response: Many Vermonters come back to visit family in the summer & fall. It doesn't seem to matter where they live, Vermont draws them back for annual visits. We have been delighted to host many of these returning natives. We feel they are especially lucky to have grown up in such a beautiful, special and unique state.

Perfect getaway

The photo on the outside of the house looks like it is on top of a hill. Really only a small knoll. The house is adorable with a front porch that is very inviting any time of the day.

There is absolutely nothing one could need, which is not provided, short of the food you eat, or any specialty condiments.

The location is at the end of the line, so great for privacy.

Inside is very cozy, clean and homey. Spacious room for the kids in the lower level(they can have their own self contained flat)

Kathleen is so considerate and very easily contacted for any questions.

The light switches are a little tricky, but after a few tries you can get it. And if you loose electricity in the bathrooms, just push the reset on the outlet by the sink.

We were a group of four and every one of us were totally thrilled with our accommodations and would highly recommend this home away to anyone who enjoys a time away from hustle and bustle.

We went to the Weston Priory, 20 minutes away, at least twice a day, and this location made for a perfect retreat.

Enjoy your stay.

Well maintained property

  • 5 of 5

We arrived at this Cavendish property to find a very clean and well maintained property. It was exactly as posted. Every possible item needed or wanted was available in this home. Kathleen was very helpful and friendly.

We enjoyed visiting Ben & Jerry's, Cabot, Cold Hollow Cider Mill, the Vermont Country Store and Camp Plymouth State Park. We have recommended this property to our friends and family.
