Couples Getaway

This little studio apartment is perfect for a couple. It was well-stocked with kitchenware and a gas grill. Access to the lake is across the very busy, noisy VT State Route 30, the major road between Wells and Poultney. The previous tenants did not clean the apartment after leaving, especially the bathroom and shower, so we had to do so before moving in. The dock area needs some work, as the decking that holds the steps into the swimming area was completely broken through, making the steps unusable. We reported these issues to the caretaker and the property owner but have gotten no response; the property is for sale. Wear water shoes to swim here, the lake bottom is muddy and rocky. There was no canoe, but there were two kayaks and a rowboat, and a float to swim to for sunning.
Despite the noisy road and needed upkeep, the apartment served us well and we enjoyed our time at the lake. We brought our own kayaks, and felt safe leaving them on the dock out of sight of the busy road. The lake is beautiful and the kayaking was great fun, with wildlife to photograph and lily ponds to explore. We enjoyed dinners at The Lake House on Lake Bomoseen, at Mio Bistro in Dorset, and The Perfect Wife in Manchester.

The property was exactly as described and came with all the comforts of home - charming inside and out. The view of the lake from the deck was incredible, especially with the fall foliage. Good fishing right off the dock. Gary, the owner, was great about responding to my emails and even contacted me by phone. His directions to his place were "right on" and we found it with no problem.

Lots to do if you're willing to drive a bit of a distance which was fine with us. We were there primarily for the fall foliage and saw plenty of it in our trips to area attractions which included the Shelburne Museum (wonderful place), Ben and Jerry's factory tour (delicious ice cream!), Vermont Country Store and Bryant's (their restaurant), a drive up Mount Equinox, tour of Hildene (beautiful property), a trip through Woodstock and to the Quechee Gorge. We had a delicious and inexpensive dinner at The Barn Restaurant in Pawlet (fascinating old barn with huge fireplace and the most delicious homemade apple pie!), a great breakfast at Mary's Cafe in Rutland and lunch at Seasons in Manchester to name a few.

We hated to see our week end and hope to return someday.

My wife and I were looking for a place to spend a relaxing, low-key week. I searched online and came across this lovely property which appeared to be exactly what we were looking for, so we booked it.

Gary was great in communicating, both online and over the phone and the reservation/payment process was very smooth. He even sent us detailed directions, which were very accurate.

Gary was also there for most of the week, and we had a nice time chatting with him and his friends. He was also very concerned that everything was good for our stay.

We arrived and the property was spotless and just like the photos. We settled in and headed to town for supplies - the main town of Poulteney was quite a bit smaller than we had pictured.

The dock was very nice, we spent several full days just hanging out on it, swimming and sunning. There's also a nice fire ring, for warming up the evenings.

There were a few small family restaurants in Poulteney, the best of which, Perry's, was closed for vacation most of the week. If you're into fine dining, you'll need to go to Rutland or Manchester, both about 35 minutes away, but a beautiful drive.

Our best meal was at a place called "Little Harry's" in Rutland.

As far as activities, there isn't a great deal to do in the immediate area. It's very quiet, even though there are a lot of camps in the area, and we did some reading, kayaking and hiking. We saw several Bald Eagles and came within about 50' of one while kayaking, which was incredible.

For hiking, we took a geat hike at the Nature Reseve owned by the college which was on Endless Brook Road. It's about a half hour climb, and you get an amazing vista of the Lake and surrounding area. Highly recommend this one!

Overall, this rental was great for a relaxing, do-nothing vacation. Highly recommended!
