Enjoy fresh mountain air and peaceful atmosphere at Bear Tree Cabin! Cute as a button, it's nestled on the margin of a forest and gets its nickname from an unusual natural formation on a tree in the yard that looks like a bear is hugging it.

Less than a mile from the Watauga River, the cabin is situated near a rural farming neighborhood. Fishing, canoeing or swimming in the Watauga River is less than a mile away. Bring your mountain bike and enjoy the gentle grade of the Watauga River Road ... or for a little more adventure, let our resident mountain bike expert recommend a nearby trail that fits your abilities ... And if road biking is your passion, find out why Lance Armstrong said of our area '...I'd say it's the best area for training in the whole of the United States.' (Cycle Sport June 1998).

Shopping at the historic Mast General Store is only 3 miles away.

Restaurants of all types are in nearby Banner Elk, Boone and Blowing Rock as well as a few in the village of Valle Crucis itself. Hiking trails are available onsite or within a short drive.

And during the winter months ... Three ski resorts are within a 30 to 40 min. drive. Cross country skiing onsite is available if snow conditions are right. Snow tubing is an option for the non-skier at some ski resorts nearby. At the end of the day, come 'home' to a relaxing hot tub or a cozy woodstove fire.

About Angela

A resident of Watauga county for most of his life, owner Jim Henson has traveled around the world climbing mountains including Kilimanjaro, Mt. Elbrus, and Mt. Ranier. He is an avid mountain biker and enjoys playing tennis. He grows Christmas trees on part of his farm, but the vast majority of his 250 acres is woodlands and he has donated a conservation easement on more than half of his land to the Blue Ridge Conservancy. If you call for more info you will likely speak with Jim's assistant, Angela (a veritable wealth of knowledge).

Why Angela chose Valle Crucis

After owning the 250-acre farm for nearly 40 years, Jim decided to build a cabin in 2006 for friends and family to share in the beauty of the location. Valle Crucis is centrally located to Banner Elk, Boone and Blowing Rock.

What makes this cabin unique

Bear Tree cabin gets its name from an unusual natural formation on a tree near the cabin. The wooded surroundings allow for the discovery of many of Mother Nature's wonders! The nearby 21-hole disc golf course was completed in 2008. An extensive network of mountain bike trails is not far away.

This was our second adventure to Bear Cabin so as you can imagine We Love It!!! This is the perfect place to stay for a romantic getaway or to bring the family! Just returned from a wonderful weekend at Bear Tree Cabin. Stayed at the recommendation of a neighbor, and we were so pleased with the accommodations! Plenty of space for our family of four plus the in-laws. Angela was a pleasure to work with, and the cabin is completely charming. I agree with the other reviews - it is clean, the beds are super comfortable, and there is plenty to do for all ages. Wish we had more time there, but we hope to return again soon!

Even Better in Person Than the Photos!

Bear Tree Cabin is the rare VRBO property that is better in person than it appears in the online photos. The style and cleanliness of the place impressed us and we would definitely recommend it to anyone. We stayed there during our wedding week in Valle Crucis and absolutely loved it. No complaints at all. Everything was perfect. It's situated in a tranquil setting, hot tub nestled in the backyard, and forest all around. Angela was a kind and communicative host who responded quickly to emails and phone calls. We really couldn't have asked for a better place to stay -- will definitely stay at Bear Tree Cabin again when we're in Valle Crucis.

I couldn't have asked for a better place to have our honeymoon. The cabin is so beautiful and peaceful and your all alone. The bed was comfortable, i loved the kitchen even though we were able to grill out every night thanks to the grill they provide. Every night we took time to soak in the hottub with lights lit up all around, so beautiful. This is a place that i will bring my family to. It may not have air..but you dont need it up there. We stayed there when boone was reaching 90 degree weather..stayed cool the whole time. We thank you so much for the stay and cant wait to return. I recommend this cabin to everyone.

We had a wonderful relaxing vacation at your charming cabin. The accomodations were clean and well stocked. The upstairs king bed was very comfortable.
