Enjoy fresh mountain air and peaceful atmosphere at Bear Tree Cabin! Cute as a button, it's nestled on the margin of a forest and gets its nickname from an unusual natural formation on a tree in the yard that looks like a bear is hugging it.
Less than a mile from the Watauga River, the cabin is situated near a rural farming neighborhood. Fishing, canoeing or swimming in the Watauga River is less than a mile away. Bring your mountain bike and enjoy the gentle grade of the Watauga River Road ... or for a little more adventure, let our resident mountain bike expert recommend a nearby trail that fits your abilities ... And if road biking is your passion, find out why Lance Armstrong said of our area '...I'd say it's the best area for training in the whole of the United States.' (Cycle Sport June 1998).
Shopping at the historic Mast General Store is only 3 miles away.
Restaurants of all types are in nearby Banner Elk, Boone and Blowing Rock as well as a few in the village of Valle Crucis itself. Hiking trails are available onsite or within a short drive.
And during the winter months ... Three ski resorts are within a 30 to 40 min. drive. Cross country skiing onsite is available if snow conditions are right. Snow tubing is an option for the non-skier at some ski resorts nearby. At the end of the day, come 'home' to a relaxing hot tub.

A resident of Watauga county for most of his life, owner Jim Henson has traveled around the world climbing mountains including Kilimanjaro, Mt. Elbrus, and Mt. Ranier. He is an avid mountain biker and enjoys playing tennis. He grows Christmas trees on part of his farm, but the vast majority of his 250 acres is woodlands and he has donated a conservation easement on more than half of his land to the Blue Ridge Conservancy. If you call for more info you will likely speak with Jim's assistant, Angela (a veritable wealth of knowledge).
After owning the 250-acre farm for nearly 40 years, Jim decided to build a cabin in 2006 for friends and family to share in the beauty of the location. Valle Crucis is centrally located to Banner Elk, Boone and Blowing Rock.
Bear Tree cabin gets its name from an unusual natural formation on a tree near the cabin. The wooded surroundings allow for the discovery of many of Mother Nature's wonders! An extensive network of mountain bike trails is not far away.
Excellent cabin in an excellent location. The owners made it very easy to deal with them and answered all of my questions. The cabin is beautiful and so is the area. It exceeded my expectations. Would definitely rent this place again!
First time renting this cabin and it was so cozy and comfortable! Beautiful surroundings for walking the trails. Didn't use hot tub but very nice to have. While the Longridgefarms tree farm was closed we got our tree from Good Shepherd Tree Farm and it is beautiful. I can see us using this cabin again and again. You are close to everything! Wish we would have gotten to stay longer.
This is the third year in row we have rented this cabin and headed to Circle "C" Tree Farm to let the grandchildren choose a Christmas tree. The wife and I always arrive mid afternoon before the remainder of my family gets there and the cabin was BRRR cold. I thought I didn't know how to get the furnace started but it turns out the tank was out of fuel and therefore it would not run. Angela, who takes care of the cabin, drive right out and when she discovered the company in charge of maintaining fuel in the tank had overlooked it and had allowed it to run out. She left immediately and returned with five 5 gallon tanks of fuel! I tried to give her a hand but she would have none of it and filled the tank with enough fuel to get us through the week end. Anyone can have a problem but it is how they handle it that makes your stay pleasant or miserable. This lady went above and beyond to handle this unfortunate situation that absolutely was not her fault. The cabin is amazing, the hot tub is relaxing, the cabin is charming and the hostess is genuinely one of the finest people you will ever meet. Give it a try and I promise you won't be disappointed. Thank you Angela for another year of making wonderful memories.
Our family really enjoyed this adorable cabin! Loved the setting and attention to detail with the decorating inside & out. We were only able to stay 1 night, but we will definitely plan to come & stay longer next time. Our boys loved exploring on the trail behind the house and the adults loved relaxing on the front porch. A very serene & comfortable getaway!
I have stayed twice, so far, at the Bear Tree Cabin, for a total of 5 days. Both times, the cabin and amenities have far exceeded my every expectation. The first visit, there were four of us, and the second visit, there were nine of us. Everyone was delighted to have such a nice place to "crash" at the end of long days playing in the beautiful NC mountains. We found the beds to be comfortable, the hot tub was fantastic, and even in the dead of Summer, it was always comfortable even without air conditioning. The cabin owners were extremely pleasant, and I am very much looking forward to staying at the cabin again, in the future. Thank you very much for sharing this wonderful cabin with myself and my friends, we are very thankful that we have this resource available for when we want to come up and explore the beautiful North Carolina mountains, and way of living.
We stayed at Bear Tree for the first time this weekend and had a fantastic time. This cabin had all we needed, including peace, quiet and seclusion. All the amenities were there and the place was immaculate.
