WINE COUNTRY STONE LODGE IN STATE PARK

Kenwood House Rental Photos and Description

House, 5 Bedrooms with Detached Unit, 5 Baths, (Sleeps 10)

Be sure to click the video links below. This one of a kind stone lodge is located in the very heart of the Sonoma Valley. 2 stone fireplaces, professional kitchen, wine bar, chemical free lap pool, waterfall, 8 person spa/hot tub, stone fire pit with extensive outdoor lounging and dining areas plus a bocce ball court.

WE NOW HAVE ACCESS TO A RURAL EVENT FACILITY OR CAN HELP YOU LOCATE A BACK-ROADS VENUE OF CHOICE.

We have our own CULINARY & WINE EXPERTS on staff offering guests access to a vanguard experience of boutique wines and wineries, state of the art farmers/ranchers, and brings all these elements together via tours, cooking classes, private tastings/pairings and meals or events - tailor made to each groups predilections and schedules.

The house is 4000 square feet including 4 bedrooms/4 bathrooms in the main house and 1/1 in a separate but nearby guest cottage with its own full kitchen. All 5 bathrooms are en-suite and many have over-sized soaking tubs with showers. The master has a steam shower and 2 person tub. There is a separate theater room with 70' led screen, surround sound system and deep lounge seating. We have a caretaker who lives down the road and thus you can be assured of better service than from most vacation rentals.

The kitchen is vast with 2 islands, 2 dishwashers, requisite commercial equipment including a 6 burner Viking range with grill and full compliment of cooking tools and serving dishes. An adjacent 14 foot wine bar with temperature controlled refrigeration. A unique feature is the outdoor fire-pit (can also be used for cooking) under 150 foot tall fir trees which has both a propane and charcoal grills. A fabulous place to gather around a roaring fire as well as to cook or dine. If you want to relax completely we can arrange for our housekeeper to visit; Laura and Eric our private chefs can provide private meals or prepared food and catering as you prefer.

This is an interior designer's private residence; rustic, country French antiques abound with an easy 'feet up' level of comfort and ease throughout. It is situated just off the main valley floor, at the mouth of a granite canyon which becomes a state park, Sugar Loaf. The great room with mammoth old-world stone fireplace soars above 18 feet. The locally quarried stone walls are over 1' thick, providing luxurious natural air conditioning. The outdoor splendor merges with the indoors as all the front-facing first floor windows bifold back to open completely; secluded and picturesque. There are endless views to the forested peaks of the nearby state park. It is a 5 minute walk to famous wineries (Landmark, Chateau St Jean); hiking and horseback riding are just up the road. The world famous Kenwood Inn and Spa is just down the lane.

This lodge is equally splendid in summer or winter. When the rainy season starts in late fall, the nearby creek fills significantly and rushes by to the valley floor. It can sound like Niagara Falls is across the way; truly delightful. The nights are often cool enough even in the summer to use the fireplaces and fire-pit but they are wonderful in the fall winter and early spring.

12 miles from Sonoma Plaza, 10 miles to Santa Rosa; 30 minutes to the Russian River and Napa valley, 1.25 hours to San Francisco,Oakland or Sacramento airports. Santa Rosa airport is only 20 minutes away and now has nonstop flights from LAX, Las Vegas and Seattle.

I am interior designer trained in both the US and France. In 1999 I totally gutted and rebuilt this solid stone house, making sure it retained all the beauty of the original structure but all the comforts of a brand new home. Because my background is specifically in hospitality design, I think you will find that I have done well to anticipate the guests' needs as they come to the house for profound rest and relaxation as well as to partake of the wonders of the Valley of The Moon.

blair spangler purchased this house in 1998

This location is in the heart of the Sonoma Valley, also known as the Valley of the Moon. To me it is the most beautiful section of either the Sonoma or Napa Valleys. This lot is located in a canyon, the only such geographical particulars of its type in Sonoma. The Canyon provides cool and shade in the relative extreme heat of the Sonoma summers. Everything is green and cool in the shelter of Adobe Canyon in the summer and fall while the Valley is burnt and arid, grass-less hills and dusty heat. Views are spectacular to the state park that surrounds this rural location. It is so dark at night you can't see to walk without the moon and the stars are huge and ever-so bright. The house construction was started in about 1949 by a crazy naturalist who continuously added on to the property for the next 10 years or so. They did a lot of hunting in the valley up till the 1960's. There is a cement block shed behind the house that was a walk in cooler where they hung the deer and mountain lion carcasses. We still have some mountain lion in the area -but they stay up in the park, never any problem. If they find any bear they trap them and take them up to Lake County. What is now the guest cottage was actually built to house racoons - luckily they had long departed when I took possession in 1998. The original owner had also started a tunnel under the little Adobe Canyon Rd so all the animals (who he sometimes hunted) could cross to get water in the creek. This is rather an indication of his eccentricity as even today there is not any traffic to speak of on this road for it has no outlet beyond the state park itself. I gutted the entire house in 1999. The trusses and wood ceiling in the great room were put in at that time.

The uniqueness of the solid stone-walled lodge is beyond compare. The kitchen is quite large and is a unique experience, part of one vast great room measuring over 1000 square feet with splendid views, 14' French wine bar and enormous fireplace, this unique structure affords a one-of-a-kind gathering place for friends and family.

MOM'S BIRTHDAY GETAWAY

Mom's Birthday Getaway
  • 5 of 5
Our Mom was turning 79 and the siblings decided to do something special. We all had different ideas but our themes were consistent: nature, family time and good food and drinks. We decided on the Wine Country Stone Lodge. We had a wonderful two full days together. The great room and kitchen is awesome for gathering and cooking. The yard and pool area are lovely. It finally rained in California and we enjoyed the large fireplace. In the living room we set up a 1000 piece jigzaw puzzle on the large rustic coffee table. The dining room was perfect for gourmet dinners and good games of Rook. The kitchen is a wonderful gathering place if you are a family of cooks, which we are. Lots of room to work and visit. There is also a great BBQ outside. While BBQing prime rib, we enjoyed the firepit! We did venture out, though briefly, for some wine tasting, hikes and of course, a trip to Whole Foods in Sonoma. If you are looking for a spacious but intimate place to gather with friends or family, this is the place. Ray the caretaker is the best. Oh, and my Mom said "this was my best birthday ever" and she was sincere. This was our first time using VRBO and it won't be our last!

PERFECT HOUSE FOR A PERFECT WEEKEND AWAY WITH FRIENDS

  • 5 of 5
We had an absolutely incredible weekend away in Sonoma thanks to this awesome lodge. We were a group of ~30 year old friends -- some of us spent the days cycling the roads between Sonoma and Napa, some went wine tasting, and some hung out around the house. Whatever folks were looking for, the place was perfect. It was a beautiful spot tucked away from the busier parts of Sonoma and Napa. The caretaker and housekeeper were great -- we got a good tour of the place and everything was ready to go (and they waited late until we arrived -- traffic was terrible getting out of SF). The pre-made fires were a very nice touch.

I can't think of anything that would have made our stay more comfortable. We cooked large meals together for every meal, and found the kitchen to be quite well equipped. Everything we needed was there and we loved the two dishwashers.

A+ all around.

WEEKEND STAY

  • 5 of 5
we had a extended family gathering to celebrate a major birthday. the house was perfect for two married couples with their two children each, who each stayed on one floor of the mainhouse. the grandparents wisely stayed in the guest house where we could sleep late.
with a very large great room and a separate media room, the house provided maximum utilization for many adult and children activities. the property is well designed with pool, hot tub, bocce ball court, lawn for children games, terraces for relaxing, firepit for marshmellow roasting, etc.
the property was very clean with extremely responsive caretaker and housekeeping staff.
major hiking and wine tasting was one to two miles away.
we had a wonderful time and would do it again.

FABULOUS HOME!

  • 5 of 5
We traveled to Sonoma for a long weekend of wine tasting with 4 other couples, and could not have been more happy with this home. It was well-furnished and maintained, and the outdoor spaces were wonderful! There were many benefits that you would have found in a hotel, like soap and shampoo/conditioner, hairdryers in every bathroom, etc., but you had the comfort of staying in a private home with your own pool, hot-tub and kitchen! The owner was very helpful in providing numerous resources for wine-tastings, restaurants and driver services. I highly recommend this home for a relaxing get-away! Also recommend Kunde vineyards Mountain Top Tasting, which is right around the corner, and Imagery Winery which is just a little further down the Sonoma Highway. Thanks to the owner for opening up this beautiful home to us!

5 COUPLES ENJOYING SONOMA FOR THE FIRST TIME

  • 5 of 5
We had a most terrific time in Sonoma in this home. The home quite comfortably suited all 5 couples. Rooms were well appointed and beds very comfortable (we stayed in the downstairs room with the fire place which we used - recommend this room as the best of the best). The living area was simply stunning - had a huge, open floor plan, stone walls, massive fireplace (which we used the first couple of days due to the cooler and rainy weather), and large windows with phantom screens. The kitchen was also large, open and well appointed. The lot and outdoor fire pit were amazing. All of this was made even more special by the caretaker, Ray, who had both indoor fire places and the outdoor fire pit "match ready" to light!

We enjoyed jogging/walking the steep but beautiful to Sugarloaf Ridge State Park each morning (to work off some of the newly acquired wine calories!).

Note that the area is very beautiful, but is also quite quiet. There is a 10:00 pm noise curfew, but we drew complaints from a neighbor while we were outside talking/laughing in-and-around the pool after 9:00. It's probably wise to retire early, as a nearby rooster seemed to take special pleasure in waking guests up well before sunrise.

We thoroughly enjoyed a full-course dinner/demonstration prepared for us by Chef Laura Lee, and we enjoyed a terrific dinner at the Kenwood Restaurant, as recommended by the property owner.

We were all fairly new to Wine Tasting, and our favorite tours were Kunde (less than 2 miles from the property) and Benzinger (full viticulture tour).

Owner's Response: Vacation rental owners constantly struggle to meet their guests needs as well as that of their neighborhood. Speaking to all my neighbors, I found that this group is not being honest about their noise level. These 10 guests had obviously enjoyed a wine filled dinner and got into the pool upon their return. The entire neighborhood heard them - which means they had to truly be loud. This is a rural location and only one neighbor is close (and his is only a summer cabin which he visits infrequently). This group is the only one that generated neighborhood complaints all summer - and the house is constantly rented with people outside all evening day after day. Ray our caretaker is always 2 minutes away to assist - which is a unique feature of this property.

FYI, chickens roam wild in Sonoma County - they are quite beautiful and part of the local lore; we rarely have them out in Adobe Canyon. I am told that the culprit these guests mention has moved on - again guests can call ray for any "wildlife" assist!

Enjoy

BEAUTIFUL HOME!

  • 5 of 5
We went down to Sonoma for a birthday celebration with Friends and stayed in this lovely home. The estate property was spacious and secluded. We thoroughly enjoyed the large great room, bocce ball court, hot tub and the privacy of the guest house. When we had questions, the attentive maintenance man was there in less than an hour to take a look. The location was near some fantastic wineries and our stay was amazing. Thank you for sharing your home with us!
