Dark Corner's Pout House is a very special place to me, and I expect all comers would be fortunate to layover here with the Johnsons. I've stayed periodically at the Pout House, and at the other Dark Corner cabin, for years and have not been disappointed. The NC mountains, Blue Ridge Parkway, Brevard, Hendersonville, ASheville, are all delightful; but Saluda is the JEWEL to my way of thinking. It is a historic place, laid back and friendly, and it is not only close to major area attractions but also posesses a singular charm of its own. Should you decide to stay at Dark Corner, you will find comfort and natural beauty in abundance, and your hosts will be accommodating and are likely to be friends by the end of your visit.

My wife and I are good at making the best of a bad situation, which is a needed skill at this place. The "cottage" is a cramped single-wide trailer with a queen bed that sinks in the middle. The size would be fine if it were designed as a studio, but putting two bedrooms in there makes everything really squishy. The doors were locked when we arrived (2 hours after check in time) and the place hadn't been cleaned yet, so we had to wait for that after they came with the keys. There's a tiny TV/DVD combo, missing a remote so your options are limited to Play or Stop. I don't think the hot tub was cleaned either because the day after we got home we both had hot tub folliculitis with nasty red bumps up our sides. The owners were friendly, but management of the place is pretty unprofessional; we never even signed a rental agreement (of course that also meant we weren't charged a deposit).

The porch was where we ended up spending most of our time; it was nice and well-appointed with comfy chairs, a dining table, porch swing and hummingbird feeder (we saw quite a few come to feed). The view was great, it was quiet and relatively secluded and the waterfall was a nice treat. We enjoyed cooking bratwurst on the outdoor grill and our dog loved the place. These things give it two stars instead of one. The price is not a good value for what we were given; $40 a night would be more commensurate with the experience.
Owner's Response: I feel it is essential to own responsibility for the good and the bad in any situation that arises. That being said, the cottage was indeed not ready when this guest arrived. The cottage is 500 square feet, and is advertised as 500 square feet on this and several other websites. The photos are posted on this website and others, The price of the cottage is commensurate for its size, views, and amenities in this area, in the same range as local hotels. As to the hot tub, our policy is to change the water between each guest. Each new guest is given verbal instructions upon arrival and chlorine to care for the hot tub during his or her stay. Instructions on caring for the hot tub are also posted in the cottage information booklet. The television in the cottage is 26 inches, flat screen tv/dvd combo. the remote is kept in the cottage on the coffee table. There is a complete set of control buttons: "load" "play" "ahead" "rev" "pause" "stop" and "eject" on the unit itself. As to the bed, we feel this was a legitimate problem, and had we known about it, we would have been delighted to have had the opportunity to address it personally during this guest's 4-night stay. The bed and box-spring have been replaced with a brand new set.

Rest and Relaxation in my own back yard!

This was a wonderful vacation spot. We usually drive 3.5 hours to Gatlinburg, but found this place by accident. 1 hour from home but no traffic, beautiful scenery, the nicest cabin owners, huge hot tub, and still close to anything we needed. The attention to detail was amazing. I would recommend to anyone looking for all of the best parts of mountain vacations and none of the bad parts.

I was so quiet and peaceful, I could hear nothing
but the wind in the trees and the songs of birds. I
explored by day and looked at the stars by night. It
was an ideal place to be with myself.
