Thanksgiving weekend

My husband and I stayed in Whalerock Cabin for Thanksgiving weekend and had a great time. The day we were scheduled to drive up to GVL from San Diego, the weather forecast was looking like heavy rain and mudslides, so Jaci called us to tell us if we wanted to get on the road early to beat the bad weather, she would have the cabin ready earlier than usual. The drive was easy (despite aforementioned icy rain and some expected holiday traffic) and when we arrived, we were happy to find the heat on in the cabin, and some roasting pans thoughtfully set out for our Thanksgiving food-a-thon. The cabin itself looks like it was recently renovated- hardwood floors, new couch, stained glass windows, great gas wall heater, and a fully-equipped kitchen. Be sure to bring plenty of firewood (smaller logs) for the wood burning stove. The tv is small with limited channels, but there are tons of DVDs. As mentioned in other reviews, GVL is pretty small so it's best if you bring your own food. The general store is good for any forgotten items. And we enjoyed morning walks around the lake. We didn't spend too much time on the decks, but we did get great sunshine and birds in the mornings. We made the 20 min. drive up to Big Bear the day after Thanksgiving to go on a hike, and the view from Hwy 18 was breathtaking. The only con we ran into was that we got little to no cell phone reception when we tried to call family, but that's more an issue with T-mobile's coverage than anything else. The security deposit was a bit daunting, but Jaci returns your check quickly, and said so far she hasn't had to use any security deposits. The only other thing I can tell you that might be helpful is that the cabin isn't as secluded as the photos might depict, with other cabins on either side and across the street, but it looked like the other cabins are used as vacation homes as well and were not being used while we visited. Overall, we enjoyed the opportunity to unplug and get out of the city for some cool weather and gorgeous mountain views, and we'd certainly visit again.
