Lovely cabin!

B.T. La Jolla, CA, USA
Review Submitted: January 8, 2008 Date of Stay: December 2007
This is a lovely cabin with a spacious living room that has a wood stove. The bedroom is also nice with a comfortable queen size bed. Everything (also the bathroom) was in very good condition and clean. The furniture is comfortable and tasteful. There are a lot of windows that make the cabin very bright (at night it is nice and dark as there are no street lamps outside), the heating was working well, so it was warm and cosy, and there are two large decks and furniture for sitting outside. The cabin is not as close to the lake as it looks from the ad (you cannot see the lake from the cabin), but is is only five minutes walk away (through a quiet neighbourhood). The village is extremely small and one should not rely on the store and cafe for food, the store being very small (selling hardly any fresh food) and the cafe/ restaurant were closed most of the time and did not smell too inviting. The kitchen and pots/utensils/fridge in the cabin is sufficient for cooking, there is also a dining room table large enough to seat 4 people, and it is much nicer to hang out there. Apart from the lake, which was half-frozen when we visited, and the small playground, there is not much to do in the village. But it is fun for children to roam around in the bushes around the house. Big Bear was about 1/2 hour drive away, so one would need a car to get to places to ski and shop. The owner and manager were both very nice, answered email questions quickly and came to the cabin instantly when we locked ourselves out and needed a spare key... All in all a great experience. I recommend it warmly.

Loved it and so did our dogs!

Review Submitted: August 14, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
How could you not love this cozy, quiet, relaxing place?! The cabin was clean, well laid out, thoughtfully decorated and provided everything but linens. For pet owners, we suggest bringing extra sheets to cover the sofa and chair. Nice, pet friendly places can be hard to find and we didn't want to lose one because our dogs had such a great time hiking in the forest and came back a bit dusty! Dog bowls are provided. Although the cafe had good food, bringing our own food made our week of meals much easier.
Jaci, the owner and her sister Donna, a local Realtor, could not have been more kind, hospitable and genuinely interested in us having a great experience. We would happily recommend this cabin to really, really nice people. May keep it our little secret to others! ssshhhhh!

I will start with the owner... very good to get along with and provided information for our stay...including weather. Our dates where 2/12 to 2/15 and we had about a foot of snow on the 13th...to cool. As far as the cabin... it had everything we needed and more!!! The location was really nice and there are great views. Someone complained about the heater...if your not used to gas wall heat...then let me tell you they make a little noise heating up and cooling down...just what it is.

I will stay again for sure and will love the summer up there...At over 7000 ft this beautiful cabin and location is about as close to heaven you will get.

Thank you for our stay.

Thanksgiving weekend

LandJ San Diego, CA
Review Submitted: December 8, 2008 Date of Stay: November 2008
My husband and I stayed in Whalerock Cabin for Thanksgiving weekend and had a great time. The day we were scheduled to drive up to GVL from San Diego, the weather forecast was looking like heavy rain and mudslides, so Jaci called us to tell us if we wanted to get on the road early to beat the bad weather, she would have the cabin ready earlier than usual. The drive was easy (despite aforementioned icy rain and some expected holiday traffic) and when we arrived, we were happy to find the heat on in the cabin, and some roasting pans thoughtfully set out for our Thanksgiving food-a-thon. The cabin itself looks like it was recently renovated- hardwood floors, new couch, stained glass windows, great gas wall heater, and a fully-equipped kitchen. Be sure to bring plenty of firewood (smaller logs) for the wood burning stove. The tv is small with limited channels, but there are tons of DVDs. As mentioned in other reviews, GVL is pretty small so it's best if you bring your own food. The general store is good for any forgotten items. And we enjoyed morning walks around the lake. We didn't spend too much time on the decks, but we did get great sunshine and birds in the mornings. We made the 20 min. drive up to Big Bear the day after Thanksgiving to go on a hike, and the view from Hwy 18 was breathtaking. The only con we ran into was that we got little to no cell phone reception when we tried to call family, but that's more an issue with T-mobile's coverage than anything else. The security deposit was a bit daunting, but Jaci returns your check quickly, and said so far she hasn't had to use any security deposits. The only other thing I can tell you that might be helpful is that the cabin isn't as secluded as the photos might depict, with other cabins on either side and across the street, but it looked like the other cabins are used as vacation homes as well and were not being used while we visited. Overall, we enjoyed the opportunity to unplug and get out of the city for some cool weather and gorgeous mountain views, and we'd certainly visit again.

Fresh Air

R and K oc, ca
Review Submitted: June 18, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
We really enjoyed the cabin. It was very nice, clean, and provided at a good value. It was close to the lake, which was quite conventient. The cabin has 2 angles of views, which was really nice. It's very close to the 4x4 trails and within driving distance of most local attractions. If you have a dog it looks like they are very pet sympathetic, I was suprised at the pet area they had, and it looks like they even left some dog bowls. The only reason I didn't give it a 5 out of 5 was that I was a little disappointed with not being allowed to put your own non motorized boat on the lake. I brought my own all the way up there and was told I couldn't launch it because I didn't live in the GVL community. In terms of a review of the cabin alone, i give it a 5, but using my boat was something I really looked forward to and was important to me, and when I was told I couldn't, it was quite disappointing. All together, it's a great cabin. I plan on making a repeat visit.
