Overview

Captain Cook House Rental Photos and Description

House, 4 Bedrooms + Loft, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 2-10) - Very close to town...

If you are adventurous and free spirited, but still require all the amenities a luxury rental home has to offer then Pu`uhonua ('Place of Refuge') is the place for you. Experience tropical Hawaii at it’s finest in this unique pole house nestled just above Kealakekua Bay ('Pathway of the Gods') in Captain Cook, Hawaii. At this elevation you will enjoy the perfect climate and sweeping 180+ degree views of the ocean, Mauna Loa and Kealakekua Bay, in a quiet and comfortable setting.

Convenient location, just a moment away from the town of Captain Cook, with all of its amenities including one of the islands best grocery stores, fantastic restaurants, local shops and a wonderful farmers market.

Watch breathtaking sunsets from the spacious upper lanai that wraps around the house. Just 20 miles south of Kailua-Kona Airport, Pu`uhonua House is minutes from an array of activities including horseback riding, hiking, tennis, diving, dolphin and seasonal whale watching. Rent kayaks and kayak across the majestic Kealakekua Bay, swim with spinner dolphins and snorkel one of Hawaii’s best kept secrets, the Captain Cook monument.

Enjoy a variety of tropical fruits and flora grown on the property such as bananas, papayas, lemons, avocados, breadfruit, macadamia, coffee and mangos. We are close to some of south Kona’s finest beaches and minutes from great swimming, snorkeling and child safe beaches like Hookena, Manini, Keei, and Kealakekua Bay.

Pu`uhonua House (Place of Refuge House) was built in 1988 by a physicist and his wife. As a former sailor he and his wife had traveled to many parts of the world, before they chose this spot to build their dream home where they would eventually retire. Being a physicist he was intrigued by the simplicity and structural durability a pole house has to offer. Supported by nine thirty foot tall cedar poles imported from Washington state, this house unlike traditionally constructed homes, has a more open floor plan allowing for more glass. The main living level perimeter is nearly all glass/view. You feel as though you are part of your beautiful surroundings. All of the structural and finish components of the house were all hand crafted on site. The property is a one acre private parcel located in the McCoy Plantation subdivision, once a coffee plantation. Much of the property is still rich with coffee plants and certain times of the year the air is thick with the sweet scent of the blossom. If you like peace and tranquility then you will enjoy this piece of paradise.

About The Owner

Aloha. My Name is Rowan. My mother and father, Bruce & Nikki, fell in love with this very special piece of paradise. It is a unique Hawaiin style home on a very peaceful private 1 acre lot in the town of Captain Cook.

The Owner purchased this house in 2004

Why The Owner chose Captain Cook

We vacationed for may years on the Big Island, staying on all parts of the island. We fell in love with the Captain Cook area because of its proximity to everything, the local culture, the coastal access and all the town has to offer.

What makes this house unique

Captain Cook is a great location for your family vacation. We are close to many beautiful coastal destinations, great shopping, restaurants and a perfect location to explore all that the Big Island has to offer. You are in a great location for day trips and close to Kailua Kona. We have some of the best snokeling, kayaking and surfing spots on the Island.

Guestbook comments from the owner

My Family and I have stayed in many vacation rentals over the years, and Pu'uhonua House is by far the most beautiful Hawaiian style home we have ever stayed in. Not only is the house awesome the property is equally as breath-taking. We were spoiled with fresh fruit and flowers from the property. We applaud the attention to detail, the level of cleanliness and the thought that went into making this the 5 star experience that it is. We will be back!!!

A GORGEOUS OCEAN VIEW from the midst of a tropical garden 30 feet in the air

  • 5 of 5

If you enjoy the hustle and bustle of Alii Dr., keep looking. If, on the other hand, you would rather be 1500 feet on the side of Mauna Loa in the middle of a lush tropical garden with a 10 mile ocean view from Kealakua Bay to south of the Place of Refuge--then look no further!

The house is an architectural marvel with 3+ floors. Each bedroom has its own individual balcony/deck, yet, except for sleeping, you will spend your time on the 3rd floor, 30 feet off the ground marveling at that expanse of ocean before your eyes; or watching the doves nesting at eye level near the top of the Palm tree five feet away; or looking down and around you at the mango, avocado, macadamia, plumeria, coffee on the gorgeous acre you have just rented. All from the incredible wrap around deck. The sense of spaciousness is unbelievable.

YOU WILL NOT WANT TO LEAVE!

Just outside of Captain Cook, 1 mile from a large local super market, and only 2 miles from Na'poo'poo Rd. and the beginning of the trail to Captain Cook Monument and the best snorkeling on the island. (The hike is 2 miles, but you will never see more reef fish, except maybe 15 minutes away at Two Step where we saw 50 species of fish—butterfly fish, triggerfish, surgeonfish, wrasse, puffers, parrotfish, eels, And TURTLES, AND swam with DOLPHINS!!!

Comfortable furniture, newish appliances (dishwasher, washer&dryer WITH laundry soap), spices and condiments galore, and nearly everyday, Bruce puts an offering of the day's harvest (bananas, macadamia nuts, papaya, mangoes) at the bottom of the stairs. Snorkel equipment, boogie boards, even kayaks--all right there.

Gorgeous house, amazing view! So would you rather listen to revelers, and cars in Kailua OR 15 miles away listen to birds in the daytime and frogs and crickets at night? The 8 in our family from ages 6 to 70 loved Pu'u'honua and can't wait to go back.

WARNING! You won't want to leave!

Absolutely Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We had the most perfect week staying at Pu'uhonua House! The house is in a wonderful location...the real Hawaii. Nikki was extremely helpful and offered some great ideas for activities and amazing snorkeling spots. The views from the deck were spectacular especially the sunsets. My Mother, Sister, Niece and I each had our own rooms and there was plenty of space for us to all relax and eat together while looking out at the ocean and enjoying the views. I highly recommend Pu'uhonua House...we look forward to going back again very soon! Thank you Nikki and Bruce for sharing your beautiful home with us!

This house aka tree house nick named from my girls was an amazing peaceful stay. The beds were comfortable, clean, and there was plenty of space for my girls to play. The view was amazing, the air circulation was great and the wooden floors were beautiful. We appreciated the kitchen, BBQ, and the washer and dryer. We also appreciated the beach gear provided the girls had fun with the boogie board, bucket and shovels. We appreciated the beach chairs and big umbrella. This made our trip to the beach comfortable. We drove a hour away each day to go to hapuna beach which was amazing. We recommend this place and would stay here again. Thank you for the fresh fruit and coffee beans. We appreciated the recycling as well.

Perfect!

  • 5 of 5

Completely beautiful blend of secluded getaway and access to amenities and activities. The house and grounds are supremely well cared for and offer gorgeous panoramic views, plenty of space and nice quiet spots to relax while also providing all the creature comforts. The location has the flavor and feel of the "real" Hawaii but is just minutes from anything you might need and a variety of things to do. Four bedrooms plus a loft meant plenty of room for our extended family of six (three adult couples). We could not have been more pleased. One of my favorite moments was each morning, with fresh coffee brewing, stepping out into the morning and watching the coastline come alive as the sun came up over the mountain behind. Beautiful, lifetime memories. Would go back in an instant and would highly recommend.

Beautiful!!

  • 5 of 5

Beautiful!! The house was very easy to find and was gorgeous. There are 4 bedrooms and one loft. Be advised, one of the bedrooms is kind of secluded outside- still connected to the house, but almost like a sunroom. We had an adult throw a temper tantrum when he ended up "outside." Every room has a balcony and view, but the main view is from the living/family room. It was so nice to watch the sunset. The owners are super nice. They happened to be there to show us all of the ins and outs of the house and help with the wifi. They also brought us plenty of fresh fruit grown on the grounds and a sample of the coffee. The drive way is very steep, you have to just hit the gas, not be afraid, and go! We had alot of fun doing just this haha. Over all, had a wonderful stay. The house was very big and beautiful. Thank you. Hope we can come back and stay some day.

Exceeded Our Expectations!

  • 5 of 5

I am originally from Oahu and now live on the Mainland and found Pu'uhonua to be such a special place. It was even better than I imagined, which I was pleasantly surprised about! More than just the beauty of the house and location, there is a sense of being immersed in the spirit of aloha. And even though you feel far removed from civilization, modern conveniences are very close which is nice. Bruce and Nikki were very gracious and shared some of the fruits grown on the property itself and Nikki offers wonderful spa treatments in natural surroundings next door!
