|Minimum Stay||4 nights|
We have a secluded, quiet vacation rental on our self sufficient homestead in Jackson Hole. We would prefer clients who would desire 1 or more weeks duration. We will consider shorter duration visits but we will not consider less than 4 nights. We are 3 miles from the Teton Village ski area and Grand Teton National Park and 8 miles from the town of Jackson and about 65 miles from the South Entrance of Yellowstone Park. Our rental is 900 square feet with 2 queen beds in insulated separate bedrooms, modest dining and kitchen facilities, a full bath, and a separate shower. It boasts a secluded location and a spectacular view of 10927 ' Rendezvous Peak and the nearby Teton Village ski area.. Best of all you are near Jackson/Teton Village amenities without the horrific noise, crowds, and congestion of both tourist areas.
We were formerly called Rendezvous Mt Farm but currently we only have domestic fowl and livestock who at times can be vocal. There will be vehicles ,farm equipment, hay and animal bedding present as well as snow removal machinery. You may get a whiff of animal manure and compost as this is a farm environment. We both heat and cook with wood from trees cut on the property and large quantities of firewood are usually present. The house is solar heated as is our hot water. Clothes are normally dried on a clothesline when possible. The house and adjacent log cabin, garden and pasture and outbuildings are NOT FANCY despite being located in a very expensive area.. If you want obsessive tidiness and fancy accommodations with urban amenities and a concierge catering to your every whim, please look elsewhere. The Four Seasons Resort in Teton Village is especially recommended. There is no county landfill and guests will be asked to recycle and sort refuse, paper and plastic. The septic system uses a unique leach field because of the high water table and requires special care. There are no curtains on the windows, no carpet on the bare wood floors and no artificial scents.I thoroughly clean and sterilize all surfaces with 100% alcohol after each guest. The water is deep well water with no chlorine and is tested and delicious. We prefer to cater to an active athletic clientele who come here to enjoy the out of doors and retire to a private abode far from the madding crowd. We want guests who come here to pursue the abundant outdoor endeavors available and not guests who go on vacation solely for the quality of the accommodation.I do not solicit reviews nor do I respond to them. Everyone is entitled to their opinion. We do not rent to tobacco users of any type and do not permit any smoking by anyone anywhere on our land. Access to the property is by gravel roads which I maintain.
It is conveniently located near the airport, the town of Jackson, and Grand Teton and Yellowstone Parks. The property is on a sizable acreage and sports views normally unavailable in the hotel and condo market. It is surrounded by untended aspen and willow groves and crisscrossed by streams and ponds. Elk, Deer, coyotes, bear and antelope may be present. Moose are permanent residents browsing in the willows year round and should not be approached especially with young..Raptors including Bald Eagles, Hawks, Owls, Osprey are abundant. Wolf and Cougars are in the nearby mountains and have been seen near the property. We are within walking or biking distance of shopping, banking, 4 star restaurants, golf courses, trout fishing, rafting, hiking and the Teton Village Ski Area with America's highest vertical drop. Annual snowfall ranges from 450-720 inches per year but our property receives only about half of what the mountain receives.Cross country skiing is spectacular as well as challenging back country alpine, Telemark and snowboarding. The winters can be very cold unlike California, the NW or Utah.
We also provide a desktop computer with laser printer with 30 Meg broadb and Wifi for your laptop as well as cable TV. The rental is located over our garage and you have your own private entrance. We only ask you to respect the wild seclusion and tranquility of our property. We would be happy to share our home and equipment with you and recommend restaurants, shopping, sports and recreation amenities which are right outside your door. We normally have our 20' Sioux Indian tipi set up alongside one of our streams. Construction and maintenance of pasture, home and outbuildings is ongoing during the day as on any farm, and building and maintenance materials and power tools are stockpiled on the property.
If you arrive from a foreign destination, we would be delighted to pick you up at the airport, and help you arrange transportation and the peace and rest you will need after a long flight. This property is listed as having 2 queen beds in one BR but the listing will be changed to show it as 2 BR and pictures will be added.

I was born just north in Montana and raised in a dozen Air Force SAC bases. I attended Holy Cross,West Point and UNC in Chapel Hill(MD'71). I was an Army doc in the last years of the Viet Nam fiasco. My wife and I live in a log cabin I built by hand in Jackson Hole in 1975. I've done a dozen different jobs and retired from ER and Anesthesia in 2004. I've written magazine articles and am writing a Kunstleresque novel about life in a post Peak Oil world. We are living in a beautiful alpine setting where we hike climb and ski and we enjoy meeting folks who share our lifestyle. We are simple, frugal and unpretentious. Our newest car is a 2001 Toyota with almost 300K. I can build or repair almost anything.
I write and blog on preparing for life in a fossil energy constrained post industrial future.
Hugh or Karlene purchased this apartment in 1975
I did not buy a vacation rental. I cut my logs locally on Shadow Mt and erected our log cabin with basic tools in the most beautiful valley in the world. With the children gone we now have a little room for guests.
The house is entirely owner built with local and recycled components including doors and windows, furnishing and appliances. We try to use as little fossil based energy as possible and encourage our guests to do the same. For example, our hot water is heated by solar in summer and by firewood in winter. A solar greenhouse provides house heat in all but the darkest days of winter.
We really enjoyed our stay. Hugh made us feel right at home. Really loved sitting in the jacuzzi tub after a long day of hiking. Bed was extremely comfortable! Lots of little extras...paper towel, tissues, dish soap, laundry soap etc. We loved our stay and would go back.
Hugh was wonderful. The apartment was exactly what we were needing! We had a full kitchen, equipped well for us and amazing views out the windows of the Tetons. The beds are very comfortable, plenty of closet space, large bathroom and very quiet and peaceful. There are a few animals kept here by Hugh, but we were undisturbed by them during our 10 day stay. The location was just 5 miles from Jackson which was perfect for us. We would definitely recommend this to your friends, and will hope we can go and stay again! Very clean, quiet, private, everything we needed...thank you so much Hugh!
We stayed at the above listed property during the summer, in the apartment above the garage that is being rented out.
While we enjoyed our stay and the price was reasonable, our overall experience left us with a strange feeling. There were a couple of factors that we feel we need to mention in our review for future renters, so they can have a more realistic picture when they decide to stay here.
Indeed the location of the property is very nice, we had a wonderful view of the mountains from our windows, and enjoyed the peaceful setting. While the property description on the VRBO site emphasizes that there are no roosters on the property the future renter needs to know that they have a peacock. The bird is louder and a lot less pleasant to listen to than a rooster when he wakes up at 5:30 in the morning. I also must mention that the immediate vicinity of the house is rather uncared for. Not just farming equipment is visible, but items that would need to be discarded are around the house, and the yard is not at all inviting for a nice evening barbeque, which we were hoping to do on the unusually warm evenings, since they did specify that they had a barbeque available. Unfortunately the outdoor grill was dirty, and surrounded by animal manure. So was animal manure spread all over the property.
Our greatest disappointment came from a rather touchy issue that no reviewer ever mentioned before, and that surprised us. We very much understood that this property is not a first class luxury accommodation, but we did not feel very comfortable when we were told that we needed to collect our used toilet paper in a separate bucket next to the toilet due to the use of a septic system. This was definitely below the comfort standards of a developed country. We grew up using septic systems, we rented homes with septic systems, but we were never told to use a separate container to collect used toilet paper.
We were pleasantly surprised to find our apartment in the midst of the nature, beautiful scenery, and the wildlife as described by the Owen's. We were not at the "farm" one hour before seeing a moose walk right in the backyard. The view of the Teton's every time we passed a window was just plain awesome! It didn't take long to consider this place our home away from home. We were so comfortable and literally had about everything we could ever need for our stay. We appreciated very much the fact that we were able to make most of our meals in the "complete" kitchen
after long days on the hiking trails . We did splurge on a terrific meal at the Gun Barrel in Jackson to enjoy wild game cooked just right. We would certainly recommend taking a tour of Yellowstone via
All-Tran. The area Visitor Ctrs. were all very helpful re advice on hiking trails, waterfalls, etc. All in all, the two weeks we stayed in the Owen's VRBO made our trip from Indiana memorable.
It is sometimes difficult to believe the things you read online, even on reputable websites. Reading about Hugh and Karlene's place made us almost suspicious that it was too good to be true. Amazingly, it really is as good as the reviewers in the past had described it. Hugh's place was the perfect, non touristy, still stunningly beautiful, hideaway in Jackson Hole. My wife and I are a youngish couple (30's) on a limited budget who like the outdoors, animals, and most of all, the quiet. That made the studio a perfect fit for us. Hugh went above and beyond as a host, even helping me replace my car battery when it died one morning. He was always available and his tips for the area were right on. We couldn't have done any better with professional travel guides. Best of all, we felt completely welcomed on the property and even though the studio is not described as luxurious, I would opine that it was much nicer than many "luxury" properties. We spent long mornings hiking and afternoons just soaking in the crystal clear air and natural elegance of this working farm. His property is more faithful to aura of natural beauty of the Grand Teton area than even nearby Jackson to the point that when we went into Teton Village to eat one night, it was actually kind of jarring. And Teton Village is no metropolis. In short, it was an absurdly nice vacation which wouldn't have been the same without staying on Hugh's property.
Hugh and Karlene's studio apartment was the ideal spot for an extended stay. We spent 25 days in the winter and three weeks in the summer enjoying this spectacular area. We feel fortunate that we connected with Hugh and Karlene. As delightful hosts they provide a spacious but cozy efficiency apartment. One is surrounded by three walls of windows that provide spectacular views of the Teton Range with the Grand Teton in the distance. An added delight is the wildlife on the property (moose foraging out our window). We loved feeling part of an old, established Teton valley homestead where we visited with the guinea hens, chickens, peacocks and our wonderful canine friend Peso. We feel this location is ideal with its' proximity to the Teton National Park, a market five minutes away, and a short 15 minute drive to Jackson.
We can't say enough about the warmth and genuine hospitality of our new friends Hugh and Karlene. We can't wait to return.
Property is on the new Jackson Hole Bike path system, also suitable for safe jogging, skating etc. Hot air balloons take off and land on the Snake River Ranch adjacent to the property.
