This is the ideal accommodation if you want to sample the Spirit of the Early Renaissance in Ferrara in a well restored building dating from the 1300’s. The apartment is suitable for up to three people and offers all you need to spend a few days in this wonderful historical city. A tiny balcony is above over a fourteenth century arch and probably represents the most romantic view of the city centre, and for this reason it’s maybe the most photographed one! The recently renovated apartment offers a kitchen - living room with a double bed sofa, a bedroom for two people, a bathroom with shower and a small entrance hall with a wardrobe. Inside the apartment you will find TV, stereo player, microwave oven and all other common household items. The restoration of the apartment respected the original structural system so you can still admire the original ceilings with wooden beams.

“Via delle Volte”, the street of the apartment, means “street of arches” and the reason of this name is easily understandable. The apartment is located in a building on a nice arch and the balcony looks down the length of the street. It is one of the attractions of the medieval tour of the city: all buildings there date from 1200 – 1300. The typical raised buildings on the arches were built to connect the commercial activities on the river bank (Po Grande) with the residences lying behind. The medieval tour continues to the Castello Estense, begun in 1385 to a design by Bartolino da Novara, consisting of brick buildings, surrounded by a moat, with solid towers at the corners. The Cattedrale, begun in 1135 and continued for three and a half centuries, offers a beautiful facade, a blending of various styles, above all Romanesque and Gothic. Palazzo dei Diamanti, so-called because its exterior is covered with twelve thousand small diamond-shaped pieces of marble.

Truly charming, truly authentic

Modernized, but still completely medieval, some of the 13th century wall painting and brickwork is still visible under the modern paint.

Fully equipped modern kitchen and bath, with working heat and hot water, we were very comfortable there in December. It's a tight squeeze for three people, but definitely manageable. It's an upstairs apartment with no elevator.

The main square, Castello d'Estense and the cathedral are a few blocks away. The public market and all the shops are in the immediate vicinity. Train station is a 30-40 minute walk, but buses are available and cabs are often available near the city gate. Cabs will come to the door, despite the tight fit under the arches.

The owner was very charming and helpful though spoke no English; we had to communicate through her daughter and the rental agent. We had no problems with the apartment, so we didn't need to contact her during our stay.

I recommend the property without hesitation, and plan to stay there with my family again.
