This beautiful stone villa is in the centre of Peratallada, one of Catalonia's most prized and celebrated villages with its annual music, culinary and artistic festivals. The house has a lawned garden with a small private pool (4.5m by 3m) and a shaded outdoor dining area. Inside, the large rooms have fascinating historical features, such as an ancient bread oven, and an underground cisterna. The village has several restaurants, some very highly rated and well known, and others offering good value, quality, traditional Catalan food. The house enables you to enjoy the Catalan atmosphere with its history, culture and entertainment while also providing an ideal situation to access lovely local beaches 6 miles away. Water sports including sailing, snorkelling and diving, are particularly good in this area. Gerona (Spain's 'other Barcelona') is just 30 minutes drive, as is Figueres, where you can visit the fascinating Dali museum. The house is ideally situated for holidays all year round.

The village is in an area of exceptional beauty with forest, mountains, historic villages and an unspoilt coastline. This area has escaped the high rise developments of southern Spain. Well-maintained coastal paths link the local small sheltered beaches and bays providing some stunning sea views. A huge sandy beach at Playa de Pals has excellent windsurfing. Nearby towns such as Begur, Palafrugell, Torroella de Montgri and La Bisbal have thriving markets for food, crafts and pottery. You can take a boat to the protected Iles Medes - a perfect environment for varied species of fish and bird life. Gerona has a wonderful old town centre - a photographer's delight. There are music, art and dance festivals in the summer months and wine festivals in the autumn.

Further details for this vacation villa rental in Begur, Spain

The area of Baix Emporda: Baix Emporda, the area around Peratallada, is a region of great environmental interest with national parkland immediately to the west (Gavarres Massif) and to the north towards the coastal town of L'Escala. The Roman archaeological site at Empuries is a national treasure. It's really worth resisting the beaches on a couple of days of your holiday to explore the surrounding places of interest. For gardeners, a MUST is the Cap Roeg Botanical gardens where you'll see the most important flora of the Mediterranean. And in July and August they have a jazz festival in a superb outdoor setting overlooking the sea.

Golf: The area is excellent for golf, with several courses within 20-30 minutes. Emporda, with 27 holes and a swimming pool for non-golfers, and Pals are nearby and very good. Serres de Pals is rather new and not yet mature. Golf Costa Brava at Santa Christina D'Aro (30 mins) has dramatic views and is testing in golf and physical terms with many climbs and descents. The best course, though a little further afield, is the PGA Golf Club de Catalunya, a championship course but worth the trip. Located on the N11 between Girona and Barcelona at Caldes de Malavella (45 mins).

Swimming/ diving/ sailing/ walking: You'll find an excellent selection of beaches all along the coast right down to Palamos. Our nearest small beaches and pretty bays are: Sa Riera, Sa Tuna, Aguafreda, Aguablava, Fornells, Tamariu and Aigua-Xelida Our nearest large beach is close by at Playa de Pals which has a hugh sandy stretch of more than a mile. There are diving schools at Fornells, Aguafreda and Begur if you want to do scuba diving. Good snorkelling is found all along this stretch of coast as the water is clear and the sea life thrives. There are many additional sports/leisure activities available in the area, and very good walking with well signed paths. Sailing and motor boats can be hired from several boatyards. Our agency has a list of phone numbers and will make a booking for you if you ask.

Other Activities: Snorkelling, bird watching

A lovely place to stay.

Review Submitted: August 27, 2008 Date of Stay: July 2008
We stayed in this lovely old house in the middle of Peratallada for one week in July 2009. We were a party of 8 adults and our ages ranged from 26 to 75 years old, and we all really enjoyed it.

The description of the property is accurate and can be relied on, although it doesn't mention that the old walls are home to many small birds who provide constant amusement to those sitting by the pool.

The beds were comfy and the bed linen and towels of a good quality. The house was clean and well presented. The kitchen facilities are excellent and all 8 of us really could sit in comfort and enjoy our meals in the pleasant dining area. The glasses, crockery and cutlery were all more than adequate. (We didn't use the BBQ or eat in the garden so I can't comment on this experience.)

The village is full of restaurants so there is no need to cook if you don't want to and no need to drive in the evenings. We tried 3 restaurants and they were all good.

The pool is small but perfectly adequate for a cooling dip.
There is plenty to explore in the area near the villa and Gerona and Barcelona can both be visited on day trips. A car is essential for this holiday home. Leaving it in the village car park was not a problem although paying the small fee did depend on which attendant was there.

The equipment - dishwashers, washing machine etc were all of a high standard and there is a really good 'sheila maid' for drying.

Choosing a house for a family group is always quite a responsibility but I really did feel that this time I had struck gold. I have received no adverse comments from my son and daughter and they would not hold back! I think however that 10 adults would be too many.

Of course there are niggles although the main one is beyond the owner's control. We wished that there had been a nice bakery in the village and found it tedious to have to leave the village to shop as we really were happy to sit in the lovely little garden, although the garden furniture is not up to the quality of the rest of the house and was our main disappointment.

If you want to stay in a lovely old house in the middle of a beautiful old village yet within easy reach of cities and beaches, I can recommend Peratallada.
Owner's Response: We're glad Sandra and family - all with such different ages- enjoyed themselves so much. Peratallada really seems to charm people of all generations.

We've had 10 people at the house frequently and if two don't mind sleeping in the downstairs living room on a bed-settee (with a large TV on the wall opposite which teenagers particularly seem to enjoy!) it works pretty well.

The birds nesting in the outside stone walls are fun to watch as you sit in the garden and the area around has great bird-life for more serious bird-watchers.

We'll review the comfort of the garden furniture on our next visit and make some changes - thanks for letting us know.

A three generational view.

Pete & Mary West Yorks
Review Submitted: October 15, 2009 Date of Stay: August 2009
This house was loved by all ten members of our party, which ran from 4 to 62 years old. It was extremely well equipped, and the information provided by the owner was good and helpful. The beaches at Calella (about 30 mins), Sa Reira (20m), and Tamariu (30m), although not the closest, were enjoyed by all of us and were compact, making it easier to look after the children. Calella de Palafrugel has the best range of eating choices, ranging from good restaurants to supermarkets selling sandwiches, but is made up of lots of small compact bays. These beaches tended to have coarse sand, but it means very clear seas full of fish, much appreciated by our 4 year old novice snorkeler, as great compensation for the lack of castle building material.

We didn’t take as much advantage of the village as the older element of the party would have liked, but the couple of restaurants we did use were good, and it is a picturesque and peaceful village with lots of restaurants. The size of the group meant that we would need to book most places well in advance, which would be difficult, and the use of the barbeque, or the kitchen, suited the children very well with a last minute rush from the pool to the outside table, and suited the adults in terms of watching them, while taking an aperitif / cooking.

Restaurants particularly enjoyed by the writer were Cal Tet in L’Estartit, and La Langosta in Llafranc.

We have no hesitation in recommending this house as a great place to stay, particularly if you enjoy the odd quiet traffic / driving free day in a village with plenty to see and good places to eat, or if you like to self cater, where the cooking facilities should please anyone.

The car park attendants in the village were merciless – 2.5 Euros per car per day – but you can’t win them all.
Owner's Response: Pete and Mary's comments reflect our views perfectly - this house really does meet the needs of all age groups. Kids love the beaches, foodies love the restaurants and there's plenty to do in and around the village to satisfy the culture-vulture.
Shame about the car park fee. We used to be able to get passes, but not any longer. You have to build in an extra 17 euros a week into your budget for parking during the summer (free out of season). But you do get peace of mind in knowing it's a secure car-park, guarded day and night.
Glad you enjoyed it Pete, Mary and family. Maybe again next year?

Fabulous!

JDMB Los Angeles
Review Submitted: August 27, 2009 Date of Stay: July 2009
Who wouldn't want to try living (at least for a week or two) in a walled medieval village with a castle and moat - as well as a pool, flat-screen TV, internet access, and modern appliances? I can't imagine anyone wouldn't, unless that person already lived in one.

That's what this house provides - plus proximity to other interesting hilltop villages, beautiful scenery, magnificient beaches, and lots of activities!

With the pool, flat-screen TV, and a cobblestone road outside that rarely sees a car, it is very suitable for kids.

The village practically has more restaurants than people, ranging from family-friendly informal to a bit more upscale. It appears that many locals and tourists come to the village just for dinner.

The owners are friendly, meticulous, and accomodating.

During our stay, we hired a chef to come in an cook us a full Catalan meal, and we also arranged (through www.atasteofspain.com/) for a 1/2-day cooking class in nearby Palafrugell with lovely lady named Marta (which stretched into a 3 hour lunch). Both were excellent.

My only misgivings about the village are a lack of shops to buy everyday necessities or food, and the closure of the castle. That said, most of what one might need is within a 15 minute drive.

I have no misgivings about the house, which was clean and stylish (even as it incorporated some old features of the structure, like a well, stone staircase, and in-the-wall baking oven).

This was a perfect place for a first-time adventure in the Costa Brava, and we'd love to go back again.
Owner's Response: Great to hear Neal and friends enjoyed Peratallada so much. They certainly made the most of their time in the area. Glad the home chef proved to be a success - we've kept his details for future clients who may be interested, along with details of Marta the cook from Palafrugell.

We share Neal's regret about Peratallada not having a grocery shop. There's a mobile bread van in the morning but you have to drive to the supermarket or market for provisions so a car is essential.

Incidentally, the Peratallada castle is up for sale if anyone's got a few million to spare!

Old Spain with all mod cons!

Dodds Berkshire, England
Review Submitted: September 22, 2008 Date of Stay: September 2008
My family and I have just had our second holiday at this villa (first in July 2007) and enjoyed it as much as the first. The village is charming and the house has been beautifully restored in keeping with its age. It gives the feeling of living in a piece of history. I kept hoping for El Cid to come riding over the brow of a hill!

On the other hand, where it matters, such as the kitchen and shower room near the pool, equipment is modern and of a high standard. The house was clean and well equipped. Comfortable beds. Enough crockery, cutlery and glasses to cope with twice the number of people the house sleeps. The description of everything was accurate.

There were 6 of us, ages ranging from 2 to 68, and we all loved staying here. The pool in the garden, combined with a large-screen television (to show favourite DVDs) kept the 2yr old very happy. Self-catering was easy either in the excellent kitchen or on the gas barbecue in the garden.

If self-catering is not your thing, there is a good range of restaurants in the village of which we have tried about 5 and enjoyed them all. Even our two-year old was welcomed to dinner in them and enjoyed the fuss made of her by the staff. In a nearby village (about a ten-minute drive) there is a good supermarket, and also near is an amazing wine supermarket.

There is a good choice of beaches within about 15 mins drive. If there are small children in the party, you may prefer Aigua Blava beach as it has the softest sand. It also has 3 convenient restaurants.

The nearest town of any size, Palafrugell, has a main square where there is a lot going on and is a fascinating place to sit and watch the world go by. There is also a large, bustling market on a Sunday morning worth visiting.

My family, over the years, have stayed many times in this area, but this has been the best house we have found. We will be back!
Owner's Response: It's a great pleasure to us to have clients return for a second (or even third!) holiday in Peratallada. It confirms our view that you never tire of a place that provides such a fantastic range of interests to suit all ages - beaches, culture, historical sites, markets, excellent restaurants, good wines, beautiful countryside and friendly locals (who adore children). We try hard to ensure the house meets the needs of all our clients, hence the recent addition of Broadband for free Internet access. It makes us so happy when clients enjoy it as much as we do ourselves!

Our Wedding Holiday

Conan Reigate, UK
Review Submitted: June 30, 2008 Date of Stay: June 2008
9 of us stayed at the villa while we celebrated my wedding, and it was absolutely amazing!

The villa's history, decor and furnishings are to be seen and enjoyed.

Staying at the villa made our wedding celebration all that more special, and I would recommend it is anyone.
Owner's Response: We're delighted Stuart, his wife and their families (from Australia and the UK) enjoyed Peratallada. It's such a romantic setting for any holiday and particularly so for a special occasion such as this. Previous clients have celebrated special birthdays and important wedding anniversaries, but this is our first wedding! The size of the house accommodates a large group comfortably and the close proximity of so many good restaurants is ideal for big family gatherings such as this.
