A century ago, the Portuguese coastal town of Comporta, about an hour south of Lisbon, was a quiet fishing village where miles of sandy beaches were framed by acres of pine forests and the dunes of the nearby natural reserve of the Sado estuary. Fishermen’s huts were scattered along the shore—simple structures consisting of thatched roofs, sand floors, and not much else.
In 2005, the Barreto family transformed and thoroughly modernized three of these huts into a stylish getaway.
