Wellfleet represents the best of 'Old Cape Cod' Lt. Island is popular for being separated from the mainland at moon high tides. The causeway may be impassible for as much as 1-2 hours. Wildlife include endangered turtles, seals, hawks, foxes and horseshoe crabs. There are Bay beaches within walking distance. The ocean beaches of Wellfleet are some of the best on Cape Cod; many are for residents/ renters only, known for the high dunes, beautiful sand and pounding waves. The bike trail is near the island and goes for miles to Brewster. 61% of Wellfleet is in the National Seashore. The National Audubon is nearby with walking trails and guides to learn about the local environment. The food varies from the best clam shacks to elegant waterfront dining. Wellfleet is famous for its oysters and the' WHAT Theatre'. Elsewhere, Provincetown offers a colorful atmosphere with the shops and art studios, as well as festivals and restaurants. The Pilgrims sailed in front of the island in 1620.
