Overview

Zermatt Chalet Rental Photos and Description

3 Bedroom Private Chalet Overlooking the Rooftops of Zermatt and the Matterhorn

Chalet Bergheim is a magical, private, ski-in/ski-out mountain chalet, built in 1933 in traditional walliser style wooden construction. Renovated in 2014, the chalet is furnished with bespoke, hand made furniture and natural materials but with all of the features you would expect in a modern mountain chalet including free wi-fi throughout, a whirlpool bath and open log fire. The chalet is completely surrounded by nature with virtually no neighbours in sight, and you don't have to share the property with anyone! Outside there is a large private garden and terrace, with a fire pit and bbq facilities, perfect for soaking up the sunshine and enjoying the warm summer weather.

One of the only free-standing chalets in Zermatt, the chalet sleeps 6 adults comfortably in 3 double bedrooms with 2 bathrooms (one with separate whirlpool room overlooking Matterhorn). There is also a separate child's bedroom and additional beds which brings the maximum number of possible beds to 9 (max 6 adults, 2 children and 1 baby).

Nestled in the tree line at 1750m and overlooking the rooftops of Zermatt, the chalet is directly on the Sunegga ski-piste giving access to the 450 kilometers of pistes offered by the best known resort in Switzerland. Ski hard all day, grab a glass of wine and sit in front of the open fire or enjoy the evening sunshine on the terrace taking in the majestic views of the Matterhorn, that for us is the perfect day.

Or in the Summer, take the mountain bike up to a mountain lake for a swim, hit some single trail on the way down, go for a hike in the woods and then end the day with sausages on the bbq and a drink or two around a camp fire in the fire pit.

If like us, you are in love with the mountains and you value stunning natural surroundings, your own space, and a host of amazing adventures on your doorstep then you will fall in love with this place.

LOCATION

The chalet is in a stunning location above the village of Zermatt with dramatic views of the majestic Matterhorn. Far enough away to feel remote but close enough to access the many amenities Zermatt has to offer.

- Direct on the ski-piste from Sunegga

- 20-25min uphill walk from the centre of Zermatt

- Nearby restaurants within a short walk from the house

- Surrounded by nature with very few neighbours

- 400m from the nearest road access point in Winter (access by cleared footpath). Direct access to chalet by taxi in summer.

- Hike and MTB direct from the front door in the summer

- South facing for afternoon/evening sunshine

Zermatt is a car-free village and hence access by private car to the property is not possible.

IMPORTANT IN WINTER: In winter it's only possible to access the property to within 400m by taxi, and after that you must go by foot on a prepared winter trail (direct access by taxi possible in summer). From the town to the chalet it is a 20-25min walk uphill, part of which is alongside the ski piste. There is however an elevator during lift opening hours which reduces the amount of uphill and walking time! From the ski piste to the chalet there is a fairly steep 10m path. Prior to guest arrival we clear the path of snow and lay grit. However, should there be snowfall then snow clearance may be required during your stay. In winter free luggage transfer is available Monday to Saturday 10am until 4pm unless very poor weather conditions. You therefore must plan to be in Zermatt before 3:15pm at the latest on arrival day!

Contact us for more details of arrival arrangements.

About Will & Amanda

We are a young family of mountain lovers living and working in Zurich but with our hearts in Zermatt. Originally from the UK, we have spent many years working abroad in Europe and Asia Pacific until we finally settled in the beautiful Switzerland. For us, no other country compares in terms of natural beauty, and Zermatt is the pinnacle.

Will & Amanda purchased this chalet in 2013

Why Will & Amanda chose Zermatt

After moving to Switzerland in 2010, we have been searching for the perfect mountain chalet to call home. We didn't want just any old house or town centre apartment, but a chalet with charm, charisma and character. We must have looked at nearly 50 properties before coming across Chalet Bergheim and falling in love instantly! It has the perfect balance of being able to get away from it all, but being close enough to town to enjoy the benefits of Zermatt. Plus it has all the essentials of log fire, ski-in/ski-out and large garden! Following the renovation work we have carried out over the last year, it also has a touch of understated luxury not often found in a mountain chalet. It really is an escape to the mountains.

- Ski in/Ski out

Guestbook comments from the owner

My girlfriend and I along with one other couple stayed at Chalet Bergheim for one week during February. The walk from where the taxi drops you off is something that you will see mentioned in other reviews and possibly be nervous about, but if you pass this up because of it you will be making a mistake. When we first arrived the view from outside the Chalet is something that words can not describe.

I did not want to stay in a hotel or one of the small chalet's in town and I'm glad we didn't. Having your own privacy and the whole place to ourself made the trip that much better. The kitchen is stocked with the basic necessities. When we went into town we purchased additional food so we could make a couple dinners at home. Bring backpacks to pack the groceries into and the trip is an ease. We liked that they had a selection beer, wine, and champagne (at an additional cost of course) as we took advantage of this often.

The chalet itself is nicely decorated and the views from inside looking out where amazing. It is big enough so that everyone has there own space if needed but at the same time is very cozy. The upstairs bathroom is something that I would love to have in my own home.

The only disappointing part of the trip was having to leave. If you come here stay as long as you can, you will not be disappointed. We now have many great memories that I will never forget.

A wonderful stay at Chalet Bergheim

  • 5 of 5

Chalet Bergheim is nestled in a beautiful spot in the hills above Zermatt. From the balcony there is an amazing panoramic view of the surrounding mountains - there is nothing quite like having the Matterhorn waiting to welcome you as you drink your coffee every morning!

Inside, the Chalet is tastefully appointed from the lovely cosy sitting room complete with wood burning stove, to the comfortable bedrooms and stylish main bathroom, which features a hot tub from which you get another fantastic view of the Matterhorn!

Very few places in Zermatt will offer this much peace and privacy – you really are in your own little world tucked away on the mountain-side. But it is only a short walk down the road into town. In winter this road would be a ski piste, making the journey even quicker!

We brought our daughter with us (20 months old) and we had no problems managing with her. There was plenty of space for her to play inside and the balcony is enclosed so that she could also play outside.

We had a glorious week at Bergheim enjoying the stunning scenery and often walking directly into the mountains from the chalet. Zermatt is a truly special place and Chalet Bergheim offers a wonderfully unique way to make your stay extra special.

Traumchalet in Zermatt

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful find!

  • 5 of 5

Chalet Bergheim is an absolute gem of a chalet. It is in a great location for ski in/ ski out skiing. The accommodation is excellent for two families sharing. The chalet is equipped to a high standard. The sun terrace is great to relax on after a days skiing with the incredible views of the Matterhorn. The living space is generous and the provision of a towelling robe for each guest a lovely touch. The whole booking experience was very easy as was arrival and departure. We loved the fact the chalet was so easy to ski back to at the end of the day - you do however need to be able ski down a red run to get to it. It is a slight walk to the village but we prefer to self cater so it didn't bother us and we loved the feeling of seclusion that the chalet had. I would highly recommend Chalet Bergheim to anyone - you are in for a real treat if you book it.

Great winter holiday!

  • 5 of 5

We spent our February break at the Chalet Bergheim with three teenagers and had an incredible time!

The chalet had a great kitchen to cook meals at night after long ski days and a beautiful fireplace to relax next to while enjoying the breathtaking views of the Matterhorn. The rooms were comfortable and roomy, warm cozy blankets and having two bathrooms was great to get everyone in and out quickly, the second floor bath was incredible! Plenty of Wifi access and enough TV stations, movies etc. to watch at night, especially for kids that were completely exhausted after skiing.

The ski-in/ski-out feature was challenging at first but alot of fun! A plus for ending the ski day was a Champagne Bar a stones throw away. We used the elevator and buses to get the slopes, granted we skied mostly the furthest slopes in.

I would highly recommend stocking up on groceries at the beginning of your holiday with their service, it beats having to go to the store if you ski all day and want to have some time for drinks after skiing or just start dinner.

Overall great time and beautiful place...

Lovely Chalet with difficult access

  • 3 of 5

Our family of 4 spent a week at Chalet Bergheim over Christmas. The Chalet was cozy and well equipped but not easy to access. There are two ways to get to the Chalet from the village and neither are safe in winter. One option is to climb stairs and follow a path. Once you approach the chalet, there is a steep path that was sheer ice and had no hand railing. Another option is to walk along a ski piste which is equally scary as it is a narrow cat track with many skiers and many turns. In either case, you are still confronted with the icy path down to the front door. Even though we did have a wonderful week in Zermatt, I would not recommend this property in winter.

Owner's Response: Hi Jamie, Many thanks for your feedback and for staying with us at Chalet Bergheim. We were really sad to hear that you had difficulties with the chalet access and that this put a cloud over your otherwise happy stay (based on the direct feedback we received from you). We have put our hearts and souls into renovating the chalet and renting it out, and we take every piece of feedback to heart, both good and bad! We appreciate that access to the chalet is not as easy as it would be for an apartment in town. However for most of our guests the direct access to the ski piste (ski-in/ski-out), peace, space, nature, dramatic views and privacy that the location offers, more than makes up for this and is the reason why people stay with us! From the other reviews we have received on this site and on Tripadvisor, this is clearly what our other guests value most about their stay. We have tried to make it clear in all of our marketing material, booking conditions and information packs that this is a “Mountain Chalet” and therefore in winter you have to deal with snow and winter conditions. Before each of our guests arrive we have a team who clears and gravels the 10m path from the ski piste to the chalet, but we do make clear that guests are responsible for clearing and gravelling during their stay. Usually this is part of the fun and adds to the adventure! Having said the above, we have taken on board the feedback and we plan to make improvements to the 10m access path during the summer 2015 including widening, making steps and adding a hand rail. We hope this will improve the access but won’t detract from the natural setting of the chalet. Again, we are extremely sorry that the chalet access has detracted from your holiday, and despite the disappointment this has caused we would be more than happy to welcome you at our home again. Will & Amanda

Brilliant mountain biking trip

  • 5 of 5

As a group of six we stayed at the chalet, to hit the Zermatt bike trails. The rides were superb, and it was always awesome returning to the chalet. Home made fondue, schnapps, grilling in the garden all with a fantastic view over the valley. A superb spot

The natural and artificial ice rinks in the centre of the village offer free fun on the ice from December to the end of February. This is where the youngest ice sport fans get together, to play at being an ice princess or to compete against each other at ice hockey.

There is something very special about enjoying a salad that was picked just moments before from the nearby by garden.

Glacier Paradise And The Gonergrat

The Gornergrat railway will take you to the top of the mountain for breathtaking views. At the top you can visit the Glacier Paradise, a glacier filled with beautiful ice carvings and benches adorned with thick sheep skin rugs

The mountain railways make it possible to effortlessly reach altitudes up to 3,000 metres above sea level. The areas in Täsch and Randa, with breathtaking views of the Weisshorn and the peaks of the Mischabel group, are recommended to those who like to walk up to higher altitudes. Or you can follow in the footsteps of Emile Zola, Eduard Whymper and Albert Schweizer to walk to Trift. And there are walking trails close to the villages for those who prefer shorter less strenuous walking.

Mountaineering and Climbing

The destination Zermatt Täsch Randa has its roots in alpine sport and mountaineering. 65 licensed mountain guides know all about the mountain world around the Matterhorn, with its 38 4,000-metre peaks.

Mountain Biking

Over gravel and stones, through larch and Swiss pine forests, on Single Trails – and all this with a magnificent mountain backdrop: With a total of 100 km with different difficulty levels, you will cover an average of 1,000 metres of altitude.
