The Creaky House

We first stayed in this small but convenient property four years ago, when our boys were 7 and 4. They quickly dubbed it "the creaky house," for its wide old floors that announce you each time you cross the living room. The space is so evocative of New England in general and Rockport's history in particular that we have made a stay there an annual occurence in the fall ever since. It's in a beautiful location, just off Bearskin Neck Road, which is full of activity in the summer but becomes a dog-walking, coffee-sipping, meditation-inducing place to stroll sometime after Labor Day. Our visits there are filled with long days watching the boys climb on the rocks at the breakwater, searching for sea glass at Front Beach, and finding the perfect book at Toad Hall (where the owner remembers us from our last visit) to curl up with on the comfy couch in the living room. At night, we all snuggle in to warm beds under the eaves, with the hiss of the radiators lulling us to sleep. In the mornings, a hot shower, steam escaping through the skylight, and fresh coffee we make ourselves or buy as a treat at Helmut's Strudel when we pick up our fresh pastries for breakfast. Andy behind the counter at Roy Moore's just up the street grows to recognize the boys by their second visit to see the lobsters, and knows that our oldest son loves his clam chowder. When the boys are wet or dirty (and more often both) there is a washer and dryer in the storage area below the property. Rockport is a walking town, and so the parking spot for this property is about three blocks away. We don't consider that a drawback at all. If you want a convenient, comfortable place to stay right in the heart of Rockport, I highly recommend this property.
