Location: Downeast and Acadia < Maine < USA

This working fishing village is full of the peace and beauty of Maine coastal life as it has been for hundreds of years. Although there are no stores in the village proper, fresh lobster and crab meat are always available locally. The blueberry barrens and winding tidal rivers host a variety of migrating and nesting birds. Day trips can take you to Acadia National Park, an LL Bean factory outlet and varied fine shops and restaurants. Cats are not allowed due to serious family allergies, but non-herding-breed dogs are welcome. Boats can be launched from the property into Pleasant Bay, with access to the wide Atlantic. Lobster fishing with a local fisherman can sometimes be arranged.

Further details for this vacation farmhouse rental in Addison, Maine

Activities: Outdoor activities in the area include walking, cycling, fishing, hunting, golf, sailing, kayaking, trips to Machias Seal Island to see Puffins and other sea birds. There are many organic farms and craftspeople with studios nearby, including woodworkers, spinners and weavers. Clammers dig fresh clams right off shore. The wharf and town landing are within walking distance.

Who is Jenny?: Jenny Cirone moved to Addison when she was three years old and her father was assigned to be the lighthouse keeper of Nash Island Light, at the head of Eastern Harbor. She grew up on Nash with her eight brothers and sisters, living off the land, and befriending the sheep her family kept on the island. At the age of ten Jenny was lobster fishing from her small boat, tending and hand-hauling 85 traps around the island. After marrying she and her husband built their small farm house in South Addison, but Jenny never lost her connection to Nash Island, which became her island and home to a hundred island sheep, specially bred to produce long, lustrous wool sought after by specialty spinners. Jenny was beloved and admired as an open-hearted, hard working fisherman who knew more than just about anyone about the fishing waters and care of sheep. Her door was open to all, with the coffee pot or a full dinner offered at the drop of a hat. Her 'pets' are sheep she rescued on the Island.

The Healing Beauty of Nature at Jenny's House

Shepherd Connecticut/New York
Review Submitted: August 26, 2008 Date of Stay: August 2008
Jenny's house is having a window into the healing grace of nature & the breathing pace of the tidal environment. The raw beauty of God's creation awaits you right outside the back door. The house was clean & well-maintained. The owners are friendly, gracious & willing to provide any additional assistance we asked...be sure to stop at Grey Wolf Gallery in Addison for wonderful Maine-made gifts & artwork. We found them because of Alf's suggestion. I would heartily recommend this property to friends. We loved going kayaking with Jen & Rob at Sunrise Canoe & Kayak in Machias - they are the best & Rob's natural knowledge of the area brings out many suprises including sighting 2 bald eagles!! We enjoyed the Machias Blueberry Festival & Craft Fair (don't miss the blueberry pie & ice cream at the church), the Sylvina Beal Sail & Whalewatch out of Eastport, Roque Bluffs State Park, & the DownEast Institute on Beal's Island.
