Vacation in tropical paradise!
Discover the experience of staying at The Wood House - my piece of paradise! Located in Half Moon Bay, West End's best neighborhood. A nice blend of locals, tourists, and expats make staying here a nice part of the experience. I like the fruit truck stopping in front of the house daily with fresh produce!
Picture Margaritaville and you get an idea of what West End and The Wood House is like. The main drag in West End is dive shops, gift shops, restaurants, bars, food stands, small markets, and water taxis. Your first walk through takes 15 minutes and then longer each time as it's a very social atmosphere so each time you go out it takes a little longer as you're always seeing someone you know and stop to chat.
The Wood House is funky! Not fancy but very function-able. (I wouldn't want to stay anywhere else). Everything works and is maintained. The Wood House is designed to take advantage of the tropical climate Roatan has. Enjoy the heavily planted yard that provides wanted shade during the hot daylight hours. It has to be 15 degrees cooler in the yard once you pass through the gate. Unlike your typical hotel room The wood House is a great place to relax and hang out. Lay in a hammock with a book or take a nap. I find the only time I actually spend inside is to use the bathroom facilities,to cook, and to sleep.
the house consists of three seperate structures all connected by decking. I'd call it Balinese Style. There is a seperate master bedroom cabana, the covered veranda.and the main part of the house which has a full kitchen and full bathroom. The house will occupy four people but two is just perfect!
No car rental is necessary. A short walk from the house brings you to the beach, to a great snorkeling entry spot, and to all that West End has to offer. taxis are readily available.
The Wood house has a 'Bug-Slayer System which uses a natural insecticide to control sand flies and mosquitos.
Freshly varnished and maintained May 2014
I've been a painting contractor most of my adult life. In 1988 I took my first trip to Roatan for a scuba diving trip. Years later when looking for a retirement home in the Carribean I decided that Roatan would be the place. I loved the third world feeling. I wanted a more simplistic life and found it.
David finkelstein purchased this house in 1999
The Wood House in my prejudiced opinion has the very best location in West End. Accessible to everywhere by taking a short walk.
When staying at The Wood House most of your time is spent outside relaxing under the covered verandah. It's a unique house that offers me all I want and need. To me there is a magical vibe to the house. It's my dream come true!
I'm so sorry that I haven't gotten in touch with you yet but I've been overwhelmed with work since we got back and my computer died as well (which is why this is coming to you via my IPad which has slowed things down as well). Anyway, we had a terrific time. The house was marvelous and just as I remember it from several years ago. We didn't use the washing machine so I don't know what you are referring to in that regard. Everything seemed fine. I don't know if Virna is responsible for having toilet paper there but that was no big deal - we just went to the market down the street and got a few rolls along with some candles once we realized that the power went out about once a day. Otherwise, she met us when she said she would, was very friendly, and everything else was good.
The weather was just about perfect - low 80's and partially sunny. The B&B next door was new since the last time I was there and we loved the food and enjoyed the owners. The only real problem was that we had to leave after just two days!
So thank you so, so much for the use of your house! We had a wonderful time and hope that we can get back there again some day. Best wishes to you for the holidays and once again,
Kevin & Bonnie
My wife and I rented the Wood House for the week of April 23rd to 30th. First off, the house is in a great location in the west end and is accessible to everything within a very short walk. The house is very rustic which being from Colorado is okay with us, however, the owner assured us that it stays cool enough without A\C. I must tell you, that is very untrue. There are ceiling fans and floor fans of which I was told would suffice. Again, very untrue. The rooms in this house were so hot, even at night that it was almost unbearable. We are low maintenance travelers and and we do not complain about much but I can tell you this is a major detractor from the house. Believe me, when it's 85 degrees and humid you will sit there and just sweat constantly, which is fine of course when you're out diving or staying busy but not at night when you are trying to sleep. It's unfortunate because the property has lots of potential and a great outdoor living room between the three buildings (the main house w/ kitchen and bathroom, the master bedroom, the half bath and laundry). The property needs some refurbishing and upkeep, it had rusted door bolts that did not work well, the fridge did not work (had to put groceries in the freezer to keep cool but would not get cold enough to make ice), light switches in main house have loose connections so lights are hard to turn on. Overall, we enjoyed the property but the lack of cool air in the living areas really took away from the experience. This could be solved with just two little wall units that could be installed in the main house and the bedroom and that would make a major difference. The other problem was that the house is up for sale and the owner David never mentioned there would be showings during our stay. It would have been appreciated if we were informed of this prior, but found out the day we arrived by the property manager. The one shining light is Tanja the property manager who is very helpful with everything and a great lady and she made the showings as painless as possible (except of course when this older annoying couple had a showing earlier and then waited around nearby until we got back from diving and ambushed us by walking right into the gate and came into the property and started to walk around without asking). We did enjoy our vacation despite some of these inconveniences but be cautious before renting.

The house is fine. I loved the true tropical design. Everything we needed or wanted was in easy walking distance. We felt safe and comfortable all through the West End. I can't wait to go back
Everything about our time at the Wood House was lovely. I loved the house, the people, and I must say, the animals. Everyone was so ready to help. The beach was wonderful. I got to try wake boarding. We went kayaking, and just spent a lot of time at the beach. The water taxis were wonderful, plus you have to try the zip lining. House was great. Lovely architecture, and a lot of local living. I will go back. Wi-fi is available at most of the restaurants.
This home was perfect for our week stay. The 6ft fence surrounding the property made us feel very safe. We went in October when the temperatures were around 80 degrees. At night it was still comfortable with the fans on and the windows open but there is no ac. If we went in the hotter months, that may have been an issue. Also, what you cannot clearly tell from the photos is that the "2nd bedroom" is actually a bed in the middle of the kitchen. Thankfully we were the only two people staying there and we stayed in the other bedroom but if we had been with another couple, we would not have wanted to stay in that room because the ceiling was open to the bathroom. Might be fine for a family or very close friends, but not for a set of couples since the only shower is in that room of the house which is open at the top to the kitchen and bed area. Also, if you had small children, they would be sleeping in a completely separate building connected by a deck.
The walk into West End was only about 100 yards, where we got to experience the nightlife and the fantastic restaurants. You could take a taxi or a water taxi to West Bay which has the best beaches for snorkeling. The owner and the local property manager were fantastic. They organized a taxi to meet us at the airport, take us to the grocery store and pick us up on our departure date for a ride back to the airport. Overall, we have an amazing stay and cannot wait to come back.
Just back from Honduras, spent last 4 days of our vacation at the "Wood House". Would definitely return. We (husband & 12 year old daughter) thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. This house is in perfect location-2 minute walk to all great restaurants, beach, yet out of the way enough to be pretty quiet & off the main drag. House is aesthetically cool-almost Balinese style. Master bedroom building has comfortable bed, dresser like shelving, quasi built in bookshelves (with books), ceiling fan & tv. Main house has super functional kitchen, all working appliances. Bathroom is spacious with plenty of clean towels, sheets & hot water. There's also a comfortable double bed & another tv. There's also a cool outdoor " living room" (2 couches, few chairs & tables + hammock. Along the "back wall" is another half bath & washing machine. Area is covered & essentially has 3 walls. Great place to enjoy a morning cup of coffee & a book or an evening beer. There's also a cool looking outdoor shower. Lots of privacy & great foliage. Local property manager, Tanjah was really friendly & helpful without being intrusive. She can give recommendations & help you arrange anything. Another huge benefit to the house is the Lily Pond restaurant next door. Amazing food, we literally shouted over the fence to order appetizers & desserts-yum! Only downside I can imagine to this property is that it's not directly on the beach. Being directly on the beach in Roatan however generally would mean a loud, not private, smaller location at a much higher price. Stay here, enjoy yourself at a reasonable price & walk 2 minutes-overall, a MUCH better call. (Did I mention Woody's grocery store is truly a 1 minute walk).
A marvelous house, so near all the restaurants & shops in West End. Be sure to try the only Indian restaurant in Honduras, Ooloonthoo. The food is fantastic! The Argentine restaurant is also very good. For diving go to Reef Gliders. Barry & Sarah Pope keep dive parties small and run a professional shop. The Wood House is a joy to stay at.
Bars, The World's Deepest Submarine - a truly A unique expierience! Half Moon Bay Resort welcomes people to use their entry point to the reef. Enjoy snorkeling from Roatan's closest entry point to the reef.
