Puako House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom, 1 Bath, (Sleeps 2)

Vintage Beach Cottage is an immaculate and well-maintained one-bedroom cottage just steps away from the shore in the enchanting neighborhood of Puako. Just cross the quiet road to watch turtles resting on the warm sand and dolphins and whales frolicking offshore, followed by vibrant beach sunsets each evening. Ideal for a couple or single looking for total relaxation, the cottage is delightfully decorated in vintage-look Hawaiian fabrics, Hawaiian art, shells and surfboards. A brief stroll away, the Puako General Store offers charming local hospitality. Meet the owners or talk story with neighbors while enjoying a cool beverage, a refreshing ice cream bar, or selecting a movie to watch after the sun goes down.

This cozy one bedroom/one bathroom home rests on grounds that are well-maintained, private and peaceful. The lush green lawn is fenced for undisturbed enjoyment of a hammock to nap or lounge with your favorite book. Shower off after the beach in a wonderful garden shower surrounded by the lovely scents of stephanotis and jasmine. Begin your mornings with a cup of coffee in the covered-lanai garden with ocean view. Dine indoors or out, at the shell-inlaid table in the dining nook or under the stars on the lanai. Drift off to a restful sleep with ocean breezes and the soft scent of pakalana flowing through the French doors of the master bedroom.

The living area, with adjacent kitchen and dining nook, is decorated with vintage rattan and custom-made furnishings, Hawaiian fabrics, Hawaiian art and resource library. Details throughout include koa wood cabinetry, vintage wood floors, custom wood paneling, live orchids and houseplants. The kitchen is equipped with stainless-steel appliances, gourmet cookware, spices, tea and coffee and an assortment of picnic/beach gear.

This cottage boasts a comfortable, colorful bedroom with covered lanai (patio), king-size bed and the added advantage of air conditioning. A full bath with tub/shower combination is easily accessible midway between the bedroom and kitchen. The laundry room is conveniently located near the kitchen.

This home is managed on behalf of the owners, by Mary Fox, R(B) 2 Papayas, LLC. Mary holds an active real estate broker's license in the State of Hawaii.

Guestbook comments from the manager

There is an elegance here and an aesthetic that also embraces comfort in this setting.

The vintage cottage sets a tone where you can shed your worries and fall into a state of relaxation. Giving away to the beach where the nearby sea turtles inhabit.

Puako is a gem. The nearby petroglyphs are amazing, the path that leads you to the carvings through trees beckons. The little store carries the best produce and taken care to provide quality dry goods.

We love the cottages generous supply of cookware, to provide the best opportunities to cook scrumptious meals!

Spectacular cottage

  • 5 of 5
We really enjoyed our 2 weeks at this immaculately kept property. My wife really enjoyed the kitchen with top of the line appliances and stocked supplies. We both enjoyed the outdoor shower after our swim at the beach.
I was very happy to receive back our damage deposit in full! I would be very happy to rent again from the 2 Papayas who manage the property. They check up to see everything is going well and easy to get a hold of if needed.

A perfect couple getaway

  • 5 of 5
This was our second visit to the Vintage Beach Cottage. My husband and I returned because our first stay three years ago was so relaxing. Everything was exactly as we remembered it. The owners, Cynthia and John, have thought of every possible detail to make for a completely relaxing getaway. We love to cook and the kitchen is a cook's dream. The outdoor table is light weight and can be moved around the private fenced yard for eating every meal outdoors. Don't miss hammock time. And the outdoor shower is fabulous. No need to venture far from this wonderful retreat.

Our favorite home away from home...

  • 5 of 5
We have returned to this amazing rental for the past five years & will continue to come at least once a year. This home is in the perfect location, FULLY appointed with everything that you would need, the bed is the most comfortable that I have ever slept in, the sound of the waves crashing are intoxicating, the grounds are completely private with outdoor shower & hammock, the furnishings are beautiful & the entire place is immaculate. The owners are amazing & so welcoming to us, you feel the real spirit of aloha here. I can't recommend this place enough. The only suggestion I would give is that they don't take credit cards. This is kind of a hassle, it would be nice if you could just call up & give your credit card for the deposit & then authorize them to debit your card when the balance is due. Definitely not a reason not to come but would be so much more convenient & far less of a hassle in this day & age.

An Outstanding Vacation Home

A very open, yet private space. Fully outfitted for any and all needs. Comfortable in every way. Very close to all of the northern sights. We found the snorkeling here to be the very best of our trip.

Total satisfaction.

Even if this place did have deficiencies, they’d be more than compensated for by its proximity to two first-rate beaches (Hapuna and 69), as well as the numerous access trails to the seaside along Puako road. The good news is that, as other reviewers have attested, the cottage really doesn’t have any deficiencies. It is a spacious one bedroom, and thanks to Cynthia’s high standards, you will find it in impeccable condition. It’s very nicely furnished, including some nifty beautiful retro-rattan pieces, and extremely well kitted-out – the collection of pots, pans and implements in the kitchen will likely surpass anything you’ve ever found in a rental unit (and if you’re like us, surpass what you have in your kitchen at home!). There’s also lots of nice outside furniture too, and of course, like everyone, we loved the outdoor shower (there’s a very good indoor one, too). We really liked the fact that Puako road still seems to be home to many of ordinary Hawai’ins – the school buses roll by early in the morning. Could anything improve on this picture? We really can’t think of anything, (other than perhaps a nice little Greek Taverna at the end of one of those access trails!). Thanks, Cynthia and John, for letting us use your wonderful place, and to Mary for organizing things and greeting us

Still Exceeds

  • 5 of 5
This is our second vist to the Vintage Cottage and even knowing what to expect it has exceeded our expectations again! The reviews don't lie: the grounds and cottage are immaculate, the location is secluded and peaceful, it is decorated in a lovely Hawaiiian motif, the gourmet kitchen is VERY well equipped, the king size bed and beddings are plush and very comfortable, a gear box with all the beach equipment you need and of course the outside shower, the list goes on and on. On this visit we left the car in the garage (yes, garage) for a couple of days and took advantage of the shore trail and hiked to the Mani Lani resort, 69, Hapuna and Mauna Kea (our favorite) beaches. The best beaches in the state within walking distance! We also snorkeled the drop off in Puako with its great visibility and sights. We spent a couple of evenings this trip in Kawaihae Harbor, not much for view, but good dinner and drinks at the Seafood Bar and danced the night away (a 10pm close, thats the whole night for me) at the Blue Dragon Musicaquarium, the Tommy Shots band rocked the joint. Thanks to hosts Cynthia and John for sharing their slice of the Big Isle and we hope to return again..................and again.

Vintage Beach Cottage is kept immaculately clean and in pristine condition by the hard-working owners, John and Cynthia, who live next door. Many guests, at check-in have said 'it is even better then the photos'. The photos just do not do justice to the welcoming, Hawaiiana home. We, who live in Puako, are blessed with sunshine, abundant sealife, including turtles, manta rays, fishes, monk seals and in winter months, the magnficent humpback whales.
