Torrey Pines features parasailing and hang gliding. Only 30 minutes to downtown San Diego for the World Famous San Diego Zoo, and 40 minutes to the Wild Animal Park. Beautiful ocean views. Enjoyed watching dolphins, seals & surfers! Spacious & comfortable living quarters. Also enjoyed the town of Encinitas for shopping & dining.

Outstanding Views and Beach

The proximity to the beach and views of the ocean were outstanding. It was great to have the steps (126!) to the beach only one house over - a major benefit. We had at least some beach, even at high tide which is not always the case along this stretch of ocean. Moonlight Beach where there is always plenty of beach at high tide was only about 1/4 mile south - an easy walk along the surf. The views of the ocean and the constant sound of the waves were exactly what we were looking for and weren't disappointed.

However, the whole unit was uncomfortably warm until we went out and bought two large box fans and ran them most of the time to bring in some of the cooler outside air. This was during a week when the high never got above 75 degrees and is coming from someone who lives in Phoenix! We left the fans and extension cords there for future guests.

If I had to guess, it is partly due to the solid glass below the railing on the lower patio, which did allow for wonderful views. When we were on that patio, we couldn't feel any breeze at all (and therefore no breeze coming into the house), but when we walked to edge of the patio and leaned over the railing, we could feel the nice cool breeze coming up the face of the bluff - what a difference!

I believe the glass was helping deflect the breeze upward and not allowing it to enter the home. This was not the case on the upper balcony, as there was no glass below the railing to stop the breeze from coming in. As a result, the upstairs was always cooler than the downstairs - despite the fact that heat rises.

Some other things that we wish we had known before deciding on which property to rent were the fact that there was no closet in the oceanside bedroom upstairs and that the two upstairs bedrooms shared the smaller of the two bathrooms. It only had one sink and limited counter space compared to the two sinks and more generous counter space in the downstairs bath. Otherwise, things were as we expected and certainly more than acceptable.

Be sure to try Leucadia Pizzeria on the SE corner of Encinitas Blvd. and the Coast Hwy - GREAT pizza. We also really liked Beachside Bar & Grill on the Coast Hwy south of Encinitas Blvd. - excellent food.

The location of the property is incredible, but we had to find another place to stay because of the deep level of uncleanliness. The crusted grease on the pots in the kitchen, the peeling paint, the stained pillows, the very unappealing gas grill outside, the broken garbage disposal, the broken oven fan, etc. was too much. It was at a deep level throughout the house. We don't live like that at home and we did not want to live like that on vacation. We ended up effectively losing a day of vacation searching for another place to stay on the spot.

If the property had some deep cleaning, decluttering, and upkeep/refurbishing, it could make for a very nice play to stay.
Owner's Response: This was an unfortunate situation and as a result of this particular rental, the owner of this property completely addressed all of the issues brought to him about the stay. He purchased all new linens, replaced all of the pillows (including the 2 that were stained, (and purchased pillow covers to be used under the pillowcases), repaired the window frames in question where there was some paint peeling (due to not being sealed properly when painted), they installed a missing part behind the oven and ventilation which gave it the appearance of being dirty- it actually was a newly installed stove that had not been installed correctly and installed to far from the wall. The burnt on grease on a pan, happened to be a cast iron skillet, and it was not "unclean" as stated, but this renter probably does not use cast iron. The garbage disposal: is not broken, but the owner's leave a note to please not use it with the larger amounts of garbage; and the reason is that due to the distance to the street level from the kitchen sewer line, if it is used for heavy garbage, coffee grounds, etc, that should not go into the disposal, it may cause problems with the plumbing.
The renter that reviewed this property was refunded his rent, cleaning fee and all issues were addressed promptly.

We stayed at 320-322 Neptune Ave during New Year's week. The view of the ocean with the dolphins, pelicans and sunsets was spectacular. The house is very well equipped especially for food lovers - they even have a garlic press and masher for guacamole preparation. The upstairs bedroom with the balcony view is better than a Carribean hotel. We also rented the apartment that was great for privacy. Overall, despite the screen door mentioned in another comment, everything was in good order and clean. Being right next to the beach stairs is a real plus! A great find!
