Spring and Summer have come to Basye!!. No better place than The Sticks for your family or couples' retreat. View the sunset over North Mountain from either deck, or the stars in our telescope w/ no city lights. Swim, fish, paddleboat or Hike around nearby Lake Laura. Its a short downhill walk from the chalet. AFFORDABLE GOLF in the mountain setting of the course at Bryce Resort. Rock climbing, grass skiing, and zip lines are also at Bryce. 'The Sticks' provides roomy comfort for two families. Large dining room table and well-appointed kitchen and linens. Shenandoah Valley offers peace and quiet, fresh air and endless views. Historic points of interest include nearby Skyline Drive, Orkney Springs (offering outdoor concerts from the Shenandoah Valley Music Festival). There's so much to do. Or, do nothing. It's up to you when your up at 'The Sticks'.

Views: The views from the two wrap-around decks are fabulous. The decks are situated in a way to provide stunning sunsets with the North Mountain as the backdrop. Feel free to use the telescope (3 inch Bushnell Newtonian) to view the stars against the black background of space. Or gain a close-up of North Mountain. Scenic drives are fun along the country roads within the Valley. The Fall offers wonderful picture perfect views of the fall colors from either balcony.

Surroundings: The home is situated on the mountain side with enough land (double lot) ,that the neighbors are barely visible. It's a short haul to the ski lifts and the Bryce Resort. It's a short walk to the Lake where there is swimming and canoeing and trails around Lake Laura. There is a Public Pool with tennis, horseshoe's and a playground for the youngsters.

With in a hour drive...: Luray Caverns, check out the most famous caves in the Metropolitan area. Or experience Sky Line Drive, enjoy the beautiful scenery and easy hiking to feel as you are at the edge of the world! There are lesser known caverns for serious spelunking. Shenandoah Caverns, Crystal Caverns, and Endless Caverns. They are not as famous as The Luray Caverns, but just as beautiful and less crowded. Check out the 'Bacon and Eggs' formation. Get up close and personal with the caves! These caves are for the kind of people who don't mind getting a little dirty. Advice... wear boots!! We have pamphlet's at the house for your convenience, that offer River Rafting and other awesome adventures. and other interesting sight seeing information.

  • There is a full bathroom on each floor for convenience. The Master Bedroom's bath offers a jetted tub for one, a shower, and an overlook to the two story wall of windows facing the mountain, as well as the activity in the great room. The Master bedroom has an open view from the loft into the Living Room providing a spacious atmosphere to the bedroom.

  • The lone upstairs Master bedroom offers a jetted bathtub for one person. Cable Television, separate room temperature control and ceiling fan on the first and second floors. The second Master bedroom is on the main floor it does not have it's bathroom. Then there is the smaller bedroom on the main floor. It's comfort and quite is the very desirable. The basment recreation area can be used as another bedroom with it's pull out hide-a-bed and private bathroom with shower.

Long weekend in June

We stayed at The Sticks for a long weekend at the end of June. We rented it at the "last minute" and the owners were very responsive in handling our request. The directions provided were excellent, and we found the home with no problem. Having never been to the area, we enjoyed the location central (a couple minutes drive to both, it's walkable to the Lake but not with the kids, it was too hilly for them) to the summer amenities of Lake Laura and the Bryce resort where we tried the paddle boats, golf, and grass tubing. Resort was pretty much empty, very easy to get a tee time, and patake in the summer offerings. The house was very comfortable and homey, great selection of books and magazines. Beds were comfy, bathrooms were clean. The telescope was amazing. The kids really enjoyed the ping pong and bumper pool, great for a rainy afternoon. Kitchen was pretty well stocked with utensils, dishes, etc. Very nice place for the price. We may return for the ski season!

Not again!

We arrived on Saturday September 1, 2012. The area is beautiful, the cabin far less than the pictures and write up provides. The carpet through out the the first floor is hideous, and the cabin itself smelled of mold and mildew. This cabin is a money maker for the owner and nothing else, the owner does not care about the guest, its about how much can I make?!!! Inone word Hideous.

The Sticks in Basye is intended as a "laid-back" mountain getaway, suitable for families or groups, but certainly not as a showcase for fine furniture and art. We are very interested in the comfort and pleasure of our guests. We have had many happy renters who have made return visits, some within a matter of months.
We know of no mold or mildew in the chalet. We will have it checked out but there is no known existing problem. Carpet damage has resulted from wear and tear of families and groups, and repeated cleaning has not removed all stains. It is scheduled to be replaced in the near future.
Rental of The Sticks is an effort to help defray the costs of ownership, upkeep and maintenance in order to keep it in our family. Not, as a big money-maker! Our minimum rate.per two night stay provides little more than utilities, rental fees and housekeeper. But lots of families and groups have shared great times at The Sticks.

We came from Boston, Virginia, Maryland , and DC to enjoy a weekend of yoga ,dancing, ping pong, singing , kayaking, tanning lakeside, hiking, and "Titantic". Beer flowed, the grill was fired-up, and thank you for letting us rent your place.

It was exactly what we needed to spend time together. The pool and beach were perfect for a family with small children. Can't wait to come back.
