The Getaway has private access to the shore, great views and a widow’s watch topping 3 floors of space. The house has all the modern conveniences—dishwasher, washer, dryer, 3 full bath and 1 half baths. Every floor takes in the elevated views of the bay. Special views can be enjoyed either tucked away by yourself up in the widow’s watch, or relaxing with friends and family on the glass sun porch. If you’d like to perch close to the water, walk down to the platform with built in bench seats and stairs at the water’s edge. The main floor has a spacious, modern, well equipped kitchen, cozy living area with dramatic round window and half bath. The ground floor has full bath, sitting area with fold out love seat, a living/bedroom area with comfortable fold out sofa, laundry facilities and separate entrance and large windows looking onto the back yard and the water. The third floor houses two bedrooms and a bath and a half. A spiral staircase winds up to the widow’s watch.

Lubec is home to the West Quoddy Head Lighthouse, situated at the easternmost point of land in the U.S. In Lubec, you will find sandy beaches, bold coastal cliffs, coastal rain forest, wildflower meadows and peat bogs. The Lubec area is host to three state parks, a national wildlife refuge and several nature preserves, all of which offer a variety of well maintained hiking trails. Local whale, wildlife and puffin tours offer the chance to observe nature up close from the water as do kayak and canoe rental facilities and many public boat ramps. The area is rich in history—the first naval battle of the Revolutionary War was fought in nearby Machiasport. Maine's own 'Cannery Row' lined the waterfronts of Lubec and Eastport with sardine canning factories and herring smoke houses. You'll find it all here—rich history, spectacular scenery, abundant wildlife and friendly people.

  • The master bedroom is a separate bedroom with it's own bath. Bedroom 2 is a large, walk-through area adjacent to the master bedroom. It has a bunk bed with a full bed on the bottom and a single bed on top. There is a separate bathtub room off the open area and a half bath at the foot of the stairs adjacent to this sleeping area. This is a great sleeping area for the kids! Bedroom three is a family room area on the ground floor. It has a bath with shower, laundry facilities, a sitting area with single bed, and living area with fold out queen sofa, TV, and sliding glass doors to the backyard and shore. Bedroom 4 is a small bedroom on the bottom floor with single bed.

Beautiful and relaxing

Great place for individuals & families who like active vacations. We biked, hiked, berry-picked & even swam at many spectacular locations, often leaving on foot or bike right from the house. Lubec is quiet and charming - just what we were looking for.
We also enjoyed reading & watching movies in the comfortable common rooms. We do a lot of cooking and baking so the well-equipped kitchen was a plus. Beds were comfortable, the place was very clean and well-maintained.
This was our second stay at Johnson's Bay and we would rent again.

Great house in wonderful location

We have stayed for quite a few years in the Lubec area but this was our first year in this home. If you are not familiar with Lubec the area is a great place to stay with lots to do in both Maine and Canada. If you are looking for glitz then this is not for you; if you like nature, peaceful days, cool nights then come on up.
This particular house was very well equipped with two full bathrooms and a 1/2 bath on the living floor. The finished downstairs works very well for our guests who visit. The house does have a system of vents which allow voices to carry from floor to floor but we found this great since we did not have to yell and usually knew what the kids were up to; you can cover the floor vents with towels for more privacy.
The property was well maintained and had a good view of the bay. At low tide you can walk forever with a good pair of "muck" boots.
We throughly enjoyed our three week vacation in this unique home.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Adventure Seekers, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children

Truly a getaway

This location is not for those easily bored. The climate can be fickle (fog follows brilliant sunshine within minutes) and although the surroundings are beautiful, it is not your typical beach vacation spot. The weather is cool in summer and the water is not for swimming. But you probably know that if you're looking to vacation in Maine. That said, the house is equipped with everything you could possibly need and staying in is no hardship. The decorations are on the excessive side, but do add to the quaint charm. There is only one real bedroom, not counting a tiny one in the basement, and housing the number of people they claim would be possible on various sofa beds, but be warned that there is no real privacy, because all the floors are interconnected with decorative floor vents, which makes sounds carry throughout the house. The shore is only accessible at low tide. The town is sleepy, but charming. And Quoddy State Park, nearby, is excellent for hiking.
Recommended for:  Sightseeing, Romantic Getaway
