The Lubec area is host to three state parks, a national wildlife refuge and several nature preserves, all of which offer a variety of well maintained hiking trails. Lubec has several sandy beaches (a rarity this far Down East), bold coastal cliffs, coastal rain forest, wildflower meadows, and peat bogs. Lubec’s West Quoddy Head Lighthouse is one of the most photographed lighthouses in the country. Lighthouse lovers can visit 4 lighthouses within a 10 mile radius of Lubec. Local whale, wildlife, and puffin tours offer the chance to observe nature up close or you can rent a kayak or canoe to explore both salt and fresh water havens. You can also golf, swim in freshwater lakes, visit local galleries and craft shops, attend concerts and visit local festivals. The area is rich in history—from the first naval battle of the revolutionary to Maine's own 'Cannery Row' which lined the waterfronts of the Down east coast. You'll find it all here—rich history and spectacular scenery.

The Perfect Climate

Review Submitted: August 11, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2011
We just returned from three weeks at this idyllic, quiet location. The cool summer climate is what drew us to Lubec from the hot south, and this lovely place was a perfect fit. The cabin was cool, comfortable, and clean as could be. The kitchen had appliance we needed for our meals. The ingenious arrangement makes the place seem quite large, with lots of books and activities for everyone. The dining area overlooks views of the cove that are more beautiful than were captured in the photos. Sunrise over the water is breathtaking, and twice we were treated to stunning rainbows. Outside, the deck is a wonderful place to relax, catch some sun, and watch the tides. At low tide, on the nearby beach, only steps away, we picked up mussels that we cooked up for dinner, and we scavenged for sea glass that is everywhere. This would be a great location for anyone interested in water sports, and though the water is quite cold, it is clear and still. We really enjoyed the scenic waterfront of Lubec, where we spotted eagles, seals and various gulls and fishes, as well as the changing tides. The Lubec Memorial Library was a great place to relax, read and catch up on the internet. Hiking at Quoddy Head was another great experience. All summer the Masons offer a summer barbeque picnic every Thursday evening, complete with a band playing in the bandstand! Go to Uncle Kippy’s restaurant for its homey feel and a taste of genuine Downeast fare. A little farther away in Machias, a must taste is the Riverside outdoor restaurant’s “wicked good” Monster Haddock Burger. Each week we had the opportunity to attend several concerts through Crow Town Gallery, Summerkeys and the waterfront pubs. Do not miss Tours of Lubec and Cobscook for some insight into the area’s history, and geology. We enjoyed the tour of the intertidal area! The local United Methodist church made us feel right at home. We were also impressed with what a dog-friendly town Lubec seems to be; our small dogs were welcome in most shops, and on the deck at most restaurants. Jody, the property manager, was just a phone call away, and returned our deposit very quickly. We will definitely return to this sweet cabin in the future.

Peaceful Vacation

Review Submitted: February 22, 2011 Date of Stay: July 2010
My wife and twin daughters stayed here in July 2010. The twins were only 4 months old, but absolutely loved Lubec and Downeast Maine. The location is fantastic. Not in town, but not far from town. What a peaceful and relaxing vacation. On the morning that it rained we had plenty to do since the cabin is stocked with plenty of books and games. Our favorite night was buying some lobsters in town and steaming them back at the cabin.

The Best Vacation

Review Submitted: January 16, 2011 Date of Stay: August 2009
My cousin and I stayed for a girls getaway in August 2009. I am writing late as the more I use Homeaway, the more I am finding these reviews helpful. This turned out to be the best vacation. The house was very comfortable and clean, the area was just what we both wanted in that it was quiet and scenic. We enjoyed the local parks as well as a trip to Campobello Island. We happened to be there for their "Summer Keys" concerts and throughly enjoyed the music. We talked about this trip for weeks afterwards. My only suggestion is try to arrive before dark. The directions were excellent, though approaching in the darkness was questionable. We felt very safe there and would welcome the opportunity to return.

Leave your cares behind

Review Submitted: October 27, 2009 Date of Stay: September 2009
We stayed here Labor Day week and this was a perfect place to de-stress. The inside is ingeniously laid out with the use of space wonderful, making it seem much larger than it is. It was cozy and comfortable and quiet -- so wonderfully quiet. Everything inside was neat and tidy and it was great not having to bring our own linens/towels!!! We slept like Rip Van Winkle! We watched the sunrise and set and the fishing boats go in and out from the deck and dining window. We had nothing but seals and kingfishers for visitors. We're foodies and the kitchen is stocked so well with dishes, pots, pans, utensils that we lacked for nothing. This is a great place for a couple of a couple with small children. The kayaking and hiking nearby was wonderful, dinner at Murphy's in Lubec was super, there are more lighthouses than we had time to visit, Campobello Island is great on a bicycle and we watched whales (and the whale watching boats) from the shore at East Quoddy Light. Eastport's Pirate Festival was such a kick and Quoddy Bay Lobster had the best lobster roll I've ever had anywhere. Check out Raye's Mustard in Eastport as well. We were lucky enough to be able to stay an extra day. It was a perfect week and we can't wait to return.
