|Minimum Stay||3 nights|
Did you ever sleep in a 'kaakberg'? This farmers house is our vacantion rental and is build like the old hay barns that are typical for our area.
It is a great place to stay for everyone who likes to be in the countryside and at the same time near Amsterdam. When you come home from a city trip you can relax in this quiet, breathtaking environment with all the luxury you wish for. The house has three floors: Ground floor with a hall, sauna room and brand new bed room for two persons (photo's are coming soon). The first floor is the living with dining and kitchen (and the possibility for two more persons to sleep on sofa beds). The second floor is a bed room for 2 persons and a bathroom. The views are incredible everywhere, but on the second floor you have an open view over the lake.
There is a little beach, over the dike where you can sunbathe or swim in the lake in the summer. This is a very safe, quiet and beautiful place for a honeymoon, a wedding anniversary, for writing, for reading a good book. If you like to be more active: there are lots of opportunities to explore the countryside by foot, bicycle or by car. It is a great place for bird watching and if you like horses you can watch the neighbor training his horses at sunset. We offer a lot of amenities, such as bikes, a laundry room, sauna, outdoor spa and fast Internet at no extra costs.
You can read guest reviews and a special review of the VRBO Bear on the VRBO site.
The house is beautifully located in the countryside at the IJsselmeer dike very near Edam, an old 'cheese’ town. Amsterdam is 25 km away and easy to reach by bus from Edam or by car.
The apartment is suitable for 4 persons, but we have extra room for 2 more. Pets are welcome, but we have some small rules. Children under 5 are free if they sleep in the childrens beds we can provide (one for max. 5 and one for max. 3 years old).
Mostly you will be in contact with me (Saskia), since my husband doesn't like computers at all. I live with my husband Onny in this house already more than 25 years. My husband is director and I am a playwright. The vacation rental is something we do beside this. We love to be in contact with people from all over the world and help them to explore the Netherlands. We love to travel ourselves too, as this picture shows, taken in 2009 in Sedona.
Saskia Huisink-Janse purchased this farmhouse in 1988
We rent a part of our house since 1998, because our daughter flew out to live on her own and our theatre got a beautiful new house in Edam, so we could move the office and atelier. Our private house was suddenly large for the two of us, so we decided to do something more with it to be able to maintain this beautiful place where we live and to share it with other people.
Our house is situated in a beautiful, still quiet area in the Netherlands. It is build like the old hay barns (Kaakberg), typical for our area in North Holland, but with all the comfort you need.
Near Amsterdam and next to the lake. If you like to be in the countryside, but you don't want to miss Amsterdam with its interesting musea, canals and architecture, come and stay here. If you want to find out that the Netherlands is a beautiful country and has a lot more interesting things to offer than marihuana and the red light district, please come to our place and we can tell you all about it.
Danke, danke, danke! Ein traumhaftes Ambiente in wunderschöner Landschaft!
Vielen Dank für die Gastfreundschaft!
Wir kommen bestimmt wieder!
We enjoyed a wonderful and relaxing two weeks in the Country and Lake apartment - and we don't say that lightly since we travel with two small children (twin boys of 2 years old).... The actualy apartment, amentities and surroundings surpassed any expectations we had based on the descriptions on the Internet. The apartment is beautiful, clean, tastfully decorated (including beautiful bouquets of fresh flowers), and the view (typical Dutch) is magnificent. Many of the days we were there, we just stayed "home", with the kids playing in the big garden (including sandbox), and us, adults, enjoying the quiet and the view. Or we hopped over the dyke to play on the beach. Or we rode our bikes along the dyke to the quaint little town Edam. One of the days we went to Amsterdam to visit the zoo (Artis) and this was only a 40-minutes drive.
Saskia and Onny were wonderful hosts and they helped us make the apartment child-friendly (they had two cribs for us available, put up a gate on top of the stairs, and even lent us some toys for the boys!).
We were/are so pleased with our stay at the Country and Lake that we are considering coming back there for next year's vacation!
For the past 12 years, we have travelled every year and have rented a house in some part of Europe. Country & Lake is by far the BEST rental we have stayed in. There is no doubt that we will be back next year.My husband and I spent the first week in April in the 3-level barn-house. The views are stunning. The view from the living room area (2nd floor) overlooks the wetlands (green-green fields), which we found to be incredibly peaceful and relaxing to watch. We loved to see the ducks, geese and other interesting birds flying around, feeding (and nesting, apparently) in the field. The farmer next door has horses, a pony and sheep, which hang-out in right in front of the huge picturesque windows. There were lambs this time of the year and it was really entertaining to watch them run around (they reminded us of puppies; following one another, tearing back-and-forth). The view from the master bedroom on the 3rd floor overlooked the Lake, which offered a whole different perspective and reminded us of how inventive the Dutch have been, managing the sea! The lower level offers a sauna and a really wonderful spa-type room, which I really enjoyed sitting in late afternoon, when the sun streamed in. In addition to the gorgeous views, we enjoyed watching the children bicycling to school every morning and the enthusiastic cyclists who used the country road, also visible from the 2nd floor living room area.
The house has ALL the conveniences and was spectacularly clean and comfortable. Onny and Saskia are warm hosts (and Fred, their cat), always ready to help.
The area is charming and there is a lot to explore; the local stores, supermarkets, bakeries and general feel is very rural. Oh, and the very narrow bridges can prove quite challenging by car (it helps to have mirrors that retract), although there were other routes to avoid the village bridges.
While the property is secluded (which we look for in a property), it was easy to be in the throng of community and navigate the small towns. It was very easy to get into Amsterdam by car (although I understand that transportation by bus is also very easy to manage). After our week at Country & Lake, we boarded a 10 day Viking River Cruise with stops in The Netherlands and Belgium. The cruise was truly wonderful, but my husband and I both agree: if we were to do it over, we would have preferred to spend our 2 and 1/2 week vacation staying-put, in Warden at THIS property. Thanks, Saskia and Onny!
Dear Saskia and Onnie,
Once again a big thank you for the wonderful time we had at your place.
We stayed with our dog in the small apartment which was large enough for the 3 of us, it is so romantically furnished.
The place is wonderful, Edam is a wonderful small city, we often went by foot or by bike. Also the location is perfect, very close to the wonderful Dijke :)
Onnie and Saskia also helped us with every single wish or question. Perfect vacation and location to be with a dog or to have a romantic stay. The garden and it's view is wonderful.
Thank you and hope to see you again

There's always something to watch from the large apartment's living room. The big Holland sky with the ever-changing weather. A large green vista of fields and canals, relaxing to the eyes. Horses pastured nearby, frolicking, gamboling, or just feeding. The industrious farmer who lives next door at his many tasks. Staring out the window at the canals and fields and farm animals feels like being in Holland of 150 years ago.
The apartment is modern and clean. We enjoyed cooking in the kitchen. The TV has an excellent sound system. Upstairs, the bedroom is a peaceful airy room with beautiful views of the lake nearby. It has a high ceiling and a wonderful bathtub. Downstairs, a sauna, hot tub, and outdoor patio where we ate when the weather cooperated. Also a computer/laundry room. The owners are super-nice. They gave us rides from the bus station. They also provided us with working bicycles and locks so we could do our errands in nearby Edam, or take the bus to Amsterdam. Most important, they gave us privacy.
If you want to spend a week in the Amsterdam area, consider this little slice of heaven, and take the bus when you feel the need to be in the city. Otherwise, enjoy Dutch country life or the charming small town of Edam.
We are writing to thank you for your wonderful hospitality during our recent one-week stay at Country & Lake. The location and quality of your apartment are among the best we have ever rented. In the immediate area we so enjoyed walking on the lakeshore, the fields with the sheep and horses, and the quiet. But the location is also within easy reach of Amsterdam, Keukenhof, and other towns.
The apartment is so spacious, with its wonderful views of the lake and the canal. We spent many restful hours simply enjoying those views. And the apartment is so light and airy, with comfortable furniture in the lounge, and the huge dining table in the superbly equipped kitchen. The bedroom, with its ensuite bathroom and balcony overlooking the lake, is truly luxurious.
The fresh flowers in the bedroom and the on the kitchen table when we arrived set the tone for wonderful holiday. Using your bicycles to ride along the dike to Edam for the market and to enjoy local shops and restaurants in such a quaint village was very relaxing and great fun. The use of the computer room, laundry and sauna made for a very comfortable stay. Onny, a special thank you for advice on how to eat smoked eel. The meal we made with that and also with smoked mackerel and fresh vegetables from the local market were delicious.
We anticipate visiting you again in the years to come.
My friend from Hawai and I sprend 5 lovely days in this fantastic property this spring.
We simply enjoyed everything. Communication with Saskia is always prompt and friendly.
The daughter picked us up from the bus station in Edam, because we had no car and the house is just a dream.
I travel professionally and be on the road for about 35 weeks a year and this is one of the nicest properties I have ever been.
Thanks so much.
We will absolutely contact you again one day.
The house is a typical 'Kaakberg' and is situated near Edam,15 miles from Amsterdam in the countrysid, next to the IJsselmeer (lake). The environment is beautiful and unspoiled, a quiet and safe area. Edam is a very charming little town, and there are lots of other old fisherman villages to explore. For museums, theatre and galleries you can go to Amsterdam. In the summer you can swim in the lake or go the the beach right at your doorstep. In the spring the tulip fields are nearby and Amsterdam is worthwhile to visit in all seasons of course. If you like a quiet, safe place where you can relax after day trips or simply stay 'at home' this is the place to be.
