Overview

Venice Beach Cottage Rental Photos and Description

Spacious 2 Bedroom Cottage close to the beach and

This charming Tuscan Cottage is serenely tucked in the midst of romantic gardens Monet would have loved. Flowering butterfly bushes and blue hibiscus trees make the cottage completely private, and also attract hummingbirds and butterflies. Roses and all manner of flowers abound, as well as fruit trees: loquats, Meyers lemon, pineapple guava, Black Mission figs, and nectarines. Please pick oranges for juicing or just to eat from our prolific orange tree.

Hardwood floors are throughout except for the saltillo tiles in the kitchen and bath. French windows open out onto the garden patio where you can sit under the shade of flowering trumpet vines, jasmine and roses. The kitchen is outfitted with a restored O'Keefe and Merritt vintage stove. The newly renovated kitchen has butcher block counter tops with craftsman style cabinetry, and dishwasher. The kitchen is totally equipped from salad bowl to garlic press, toaster oven to microwave. There is also a washer/dryer for your convenience.

For dining, there is the formal dining room or the large enclosed patio with a gas grill and big table for 2-6 people.

Keep cozy in the sunken master bedroom with it's large double closet, castiron/brass wood-burning stove, and comfortable chairs for sitting. The wooden sliding glass doors open onto rose gardens.

Though located on a quiet residential street, you have easy access to all public transit including the LA metro rail line, to everywhere in the L.A. area. Walk or bike (two beach cruisers are provided) to the nearby shopping center: with Starbucks, Albertson's super market, Costco, In and Out Burger, etc. A 5-10 minute bike ride will take you to the famous Venice beach and Boardwalk with it's shops and street performers and a bike path running along the sand. For a more upscale but very Venice experience, you can walk or ride the bikes to Abbot Kinney Blvd with interesting shops good bars and great dining. A two block walk takes you to a terrific local Thai restaurant and also a wonderful old breakfast cafe called 'Maxwell's Diner' that's been a Venice staple for 40 years.

We will consider lower rates for longer stays.

About Michael/Laura

Michael and I are artists...Michael is a painter and you will find much of his work on the walls of the house. I am a writer...We have lived in this area of Venice for almost 20 years, and we love it. I have become so enamored with Venice and its history, I am working on Destiny's Consent, a quartet of books taking place in Venice from the years 1918 to 1970.

We love to bike around Venice (I think it's the best way to experience the area) and we are big beach enthusiasts. (we'll tell you about the best places to go in Southern California for body surfing and snorkeling)

Michael/Laura purchased this cottage in 1993

Why Michael/Laura chose Venice Beach

We love the idiosyncratic nature of Venice and have lived in the house and in the studio for over 15 years, That being said, we love the location of our house -- there is easy access to the beach (Michael and I are beach fanatics and if you ask for beach suggestions, we will gladly supply them), but we can get out of the area when we want to.

Many people don't realize how busy Venice is--Venice Beach is the 2nd biggest attraction after Disneyland, and can be very difficult to navigate, both in terms of LA traffic, but also in terms of parking. From the end of our street, you can hop on the bus to the beach, and leave the driving to them. Or we love the 10 minute ride on our bikes down to one of two beaches. As we have begun retirement, it has been our pleasure to provide a home to so those visiting Venice, and we so enjoy meeting people from around the world and the United States.

What makes this cottage unique

Among real estate agents, Glyndon Avenue has been nicknamed, 'million dollar Glyndon Avenue', and while this nomenclature makes Michael and I laugh, we also understand it. While movie stars have lived on this street, more importantly for Michael and I, this is a neighborhood, where people walk their dogs and their children around the block every evening, and if we're working in the garden, we get to catch up on all of the neighborhood news. This is a very safe area of Venice--since we have lived here there has not been a break-in or robbery.

For us, the best part of this area, is that from our location we have all the convenience of the beach as well as Abbot Kinney Blvd., readily accessible with our bikes, but without the beach traffic. While Venice Beach Boardwalk is fascinating to stroll, it is the 2nd biggest attraction after Disneyland, and becomes jammed in the summer and during weekends. This is not only because of tourists, but because our fellow Angelinos come here as well to cool off. Meanwhile, the temperatures in Venice remain cool, especially at night.

Our neighborhood is amazingly easy to access to the rest of Los Angeles with all of its incredible places: Malibu, Hollywood, LACMA and the Getty Museum. But also the fantastic shops and restaurants of Abbot Kinney, as well as the Rose Cafe for breakfast

Right behind us, is a shopping center with an Albertson's and a Costco. Also Starbuck's and In-and-out-Burger. Or for affordable organics, a mile away down Lincoln Blvd. is Whole Foods. Gelson's is a mile away in the other direction.

Guestbook comments from the owner

Thank you for the lovely space...it is an oasis within the larger whimsicality of Venice. I really loved my stay. You thought of everything!

A little piece of heaven

  • 5 of 5
I spent two weeks at Michael and Laura's cottage and couldn't have been happier! It's so lovely, with a comfortable and homey vibe. GREAT bed/bedding, well-equipped kitchen with lovely dishes, extremely spacious, private and quiet. The garden is lovely. I picked oranges for juice! It's so convenient to all the hot spots in Venice and Santa Monica, yet very tucked away. The area is very safe. I walked at night. The gas-fired heating stove made it so comfy and cozy on cool nights. This place is a total winner!

perfect place, wonderful hosts

  • 5 of 5
Look no further for the perfect place to stay, not just in the Venice area, but Los Angeles in general. The cottage is within easy access to major freeways, though once you step into this wonderful oasis, you may not want to go anywhere! Laura and Michael have thought of everything, the pictures and the description are 100% accurate. We made many fabulous meals and rode the bikes every single day. Venice Beach, Abbot Kinney, Santa Monica, and Marina Del Ray are all just a quick bike ride away. And when you get back to the cottage, you really feel like you're home again. A fabulous find, and we will definitely be back.

Great place to stay!

  • 5 of 5
My review is way overdue since I stayed at the studio cottage in August 2008, but I remember it fondly, often think of it and I'd love to stay there again. Laura and Michael are the perfect hosts who have thought of everything, the place is immaculate and stocked with all that you'll need, and the location is ideal. I love the Venice/Santa Monica stretch of L.A. and I usually stayed at a hotel prior to this visit but from now on I'll always ask if the cottage is available before seeking any other accomodations. You'll love it!

Owner's Response: Jack....so very very sweet. Thank you.
Reviews are worth their weight in gold, especially when they are so good. We have just registered with Flipkey to see how that goes. Actually a very well-known director stayed in the studio and it suited his sensibilities to a tee. Loved all of the light!

We are now renting the front 2 br house as well and we are just rocking....We like hosting very much...We're off to San Juan Capistrano tomorrow for a week. The gardens are amazing...please come and see us again. Again, thanks so much. Laura and Michael

We enjoyed our stay at the lovely studio cottage - the location was in a nice residential area but close to everything. A very nice touch was the use of the computer that we used to look up directions. We also enjoyed the two bicycles that were provided - we used them to bike to the beach for an excellent lunch one day. The cottage was well equipped for cooking and relaxing. We also loved picking fresh oranges for our juice every morning. This is a great spot for a getaway from the long new england winters.
Thanks Laura & Michael.
