Canaan Valley has the best southern snow. The Valley is a unique ecosystem. It's like a piece of Vermont was plunked down into West Virginia. It's the highest elevation valley of its size, east of Denver. There are a great variety of birds all-year round in the Valley, and a great variety of unique flora and fauna. The Canaan Valley Wildlife Refuge is habitat to over 150 bird species, a major flyover in Spring and Fall. The night sky has little light pollution. Popular attractions include Blackwater Falls State Park, the historic towns of Davis and Thomas featuring Mountainmade with its fine arts & crafts , the Purple Fiddle with its unique American roots-new grass -country music scene. Also nearby: Dolly Sods, Monaghahela National Forest, Cathedral State Park (old growth forest), Spruce Knob, and world-class rock climbing at Seneca Rocks.

Other Activities: canoeing, kayaking, live-music listening, snow sports in winter

Golf: Canaan State Park, five minutes away, has a wonderful course. There is always lots of wildlife nearby, including deer near the green.

Ski: Downhill skiing only 5 minutes away at Timberline and Canaan Valley Resort. Canaan Valley Resort also has fun tubing for the kiddies. White Grass, with its great cafe and friendly Chipper (you have to ask), as well as Blackwater Falls, for Nordic skiing, are about 10 minutes away.

Wonderful!

My family found this place charming, clean and well-kept. The kitchen is well-equipped, the decorations appropriate for the mountain setting, and the view very beautiful. The property is centrally located -- to the north are the towns of Davis and Thomas, as well as Blackwater Falls State Park, and to the south are Canaan Valley State Park and Dolly Sods, as well as Timberline, for those skiiing in the winter. The place is small enough for one family to feel cozy, yet large enough for two families to comfortably fit. I definitely recommend this property.

Worderful Winter Experience

5 of 5
Submitted: March 1, 2013 Stayed: January 2013
We were overwhelmed with the views and the level of comfort we found in this property. The owner was wonderful when we had some small issues and she helped us correct them very quickly.

I would recommend this cottage for anyone who wants privacy, convenience to all Canaan Valley and Davis facilities, and the VIEW! BTW -- the color scheme and decorations are most relaxing and are a cut above what I have experienced in other Canaan properties.

We hope to return this summer or next winter to once again enjoy Colleen's little hideaway.
Owner's Response: Thank you for the nice review. I do think our place has a superior view, and our furnishings and decorations are generally much nicer than one will find in a rental property.

Fantastic!

We had a great stay! The house was more than we had hoped for and by the end of our trip nobody wanted to leave. It snowed 9" while we were there and the scene was majestic. Hitting the hot tub after the slopes was incredible. We will definitely come back and stay here again. The owner was more than accommodating in their communication with us. We LOVED the wood burning oven! Kept us warm and toasty the entire time. We never even turned on the flat screen tv because we were having such a great time sitting around the kitchen table eating and playing games. 5*****. Can't wait to come back!

Owner's Response: Wish we could gurantee such great snow all the time, but Canaan is better than the resorts in PA and MD as far as having much more natural snowfall. Thanks for the nice review.

Not very satisfied

Submitted: December 8, 2011 Stayed: January 2011
House was in good condition - adequately furnished, except for linens and towels. However, Hot Tub was very disappointing! Hair and other "debris" was found in tub - which was quite upsetting because that was one of the main features that we were desiring when making our decision to rent this home. I would not recommend renting this home, as when the owners were advised of this situation, they refused to accept any responsibility. With so many beautiful homes to choose from, I would not risk a yearly vacation with the possible disappointment of this one.
Recommended for:  Pet-friendly
Owner's Response: I will note that this review was posted a year after the person stayed, and no complaint was made to the owner during the rental stay. We strive to maintain an overall well-maintained property, including the hot tub. In the event a renter's stay is lacking, we welcome the feedback in order to improve, and if it is something as serious as noted here, we would like to know about it during the stay so that it can be addressed. All that said, the caretakers have been reminded to keep the hot tub very clean.

Vacation Rental

Submitted: July 13, 2010 Stayed: July 2010
We rented the cottage for a long weekend for a group of 8 mostly middle aged motorycle riders, we found the cottage pretty much as described, beds were comfy and there was adequate seating at the table for meals.
No major problems, could have done with a few more wine glasses, and it would have been nice to have had some relaxing chairs to sit on while enjoying the view from the deck. But it provided us with a great base from which to explore the surrounding area.
Recommended for:  Age 55+, Sightseeing, Families with Teenagers, Families with Young Children
Owner's Response: Since this review, we have added more seating, including two nice wooden Adirondack chairs on the deck, from where guests can optimally admire the view. Admittedly we do not keep many wine glasses in the property because they tend to break very easily, but guests will find lots and lots of other glasses and mugs.
