My husband and I spent our honeymoon in Grand Marais and we stayed at the Great Escape. We absolutely loved everything about it! We loved the location, the cozy atmosphere of the place, and the cleanliness of the cottage when we arrived. Sure, it was pretty chilly during the time we were there (it actually snowed our last full day there!), but we still had a great time looking for Agates on the beach and sitting by the little fireplace, sipping tea and coffee. We definitely plan on returning to the Great Escape (maybe when the weather is a little bit warmer), it is definitely a gem in the beautiful U.P.!
Our family of 5 really enjoyed our week at the Great Escape this summer. The loft was perfect for the older kids (9 and 5), while it was such a unusual joy to have a bedroom entirely devoted to letting the baby (2) take her naps and get a good night sleep. The kitchen was perfect for making things easy to live simply and stocked with all the basics that we needed. The location was great - a little longer of a hike to the water for our 2 year old than we expected, but really great to have Lake S. in our "backyard". Most days there was a great breeze off the water which kept things cool indoors. Overall the place really has an "home-like" feel that makes it very welcoming and enjoyable. It's a very peaceful beach - we were never troubled by too many people, and an easy distance for day trips to the T. Falls or the Pictured Rocks. The owners have been kind enough to leave lots of material of local sights to see, which makes planning a trip easy, and my kids really enjoyed the simple things like spending lots of time at the beach, visiting the Lightkeeper's Museum (a short walk down the road), or hiking to waterfalls. The town is pleasant - you can find everything you really need at the Baywater Market or the Superior Shores store in way of food supplies - although if you are passing through a bigger town on the way you may want to stop for most of your things there. The bathroom was recently re-done, and although is has a small footprint it is very nicely laid out and well done. I hope that our family will have the joy of returning to the area in a few years - and if so, I'd definately rent this home again.
For our first visit to Grand Marais, my mother and I stayed at Great Escape for two nights that were open between other guests' longer stays. Public utilities work started on the road to the cabin shortly before we arrived, but despite the beeping from large trucks moving dirt and setting lines during the days, the cabin still managed to be comfortable and relaxing. It's obvious that the cabin's owners love it and have taken great care in opening the cabin to renters. We felt welcomed from the moment we opened the front door, and the cabin had everything we needed. Nikki, the rental agent, was very responsive and easy to work with; she definitely went the extra mile to be helpful!
Grand Marais is a great little town surrounded by natural beauty. The walk from the cabin through the sand to the lake was a little longer than expected but well worth it--what a gorgeous beach, lined with pebbles, graced with endangered nesting piping plovers, and ideal for watching the sun go down. The colors and clarity of the water are amazing. We can't wait to go back and spend more time in Grand Marais at the Great Escape!
We spent a week at the Great Escape, and had a wonderful time. The house is very close to a lot of great hiking spots, just a walk away from town, and had a spectacular view of Lake Superior. Everything we needed was provided for us in the house. Hopefully we will be able to return to this great location next year!
My wife and I and our two teenagers have been renting cabins in the U.P. for over 15 years and we all agree that The Great Escape was our favorite! The location was perfect. We made day trips to Tahquamenon Falls, Whitefish Point, Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, Seney National Wildlife Refuge, and even Marquette, where we have family. Most days were spent on the beach searching for rocks and soaking up the sun or just reading and relaxing in the cabin. Your cabin is larger than it looks from the outside and the pictures don't do it justice. The furnishings and decor were perfect and the stone and tile shower were beautiful. We watched the July 4th fireworks from the front deck, and enjoyed watching the sunset over beautiful Lake Superior every evening. We left the window over our bed open every night just so we could listen to waves crashing on the shore. Grand Marais is a peaceful, hidden gem of the U.P. We didn't want to leave when our week was over, and we plan on making a return trip next summer!
The cottage is a 10 minute walk into town for shopping or dining. It is located just down the road from the public boat ramp. You will enjoy incredible rock and agate hunting on the beach and touring Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore
