Overview

Osa Peninsula House Rental Photos and Description

House, 2 Bedrooms + Convertible bed(s), 2 Baths, (Sleeps 4-6)

With wide sand beaches extending for miles in either direction, Casa Playa Lapa is a privately owned beach front residence in remote Carate, Costa Rica, only two miles from the crown jewel of the national park system, Corcovado National Park. Tucked deep in a grove of lowland palms facing the Pacific Ocean and insulated from the rest of the world by jungle on either side, Playa Lapa is arguably the most remote vacation rental in all of Costa Rica, yet fully equipped for your family's comfort and convenience.

Completed in the summer of 2007, the house is constructed of tropical hardwoods, including teak interior, purple heart (nazareno) beams and accents, and cara de tigre posts. A magnificent spiral staircase of purple heart is the central architectural feature; the furniture, which has been custom built by a local craftsman, is fabricated from zebra wood. An open-design living area, loft bedroom suite, fully screened windows on both levels, and extended roof encourage free flow of air throughout the structure, supplemented by a continuous offshore ocean breeze.

Playa Lapa is about one kilometer from the end of the road in Carate, the most distant point from San Jose on the national highway system. The beach stretches pristine and vast toward Salsipuedes Point in Corcovado National Park to the northwest, and Cabo Matapalo to the southeast.

The Pacific Ocean pounds relentlessly against a prime turtle nesting beach--giant olive Ridleys have been observed laying their eggs on the path from the beach to the house itself. The thundering surf creates a continuous and exciting background upon which the cacophony of parrots and shore birds is orchestrated. This is no casual swimming beach--the costal bathemetry of the Osa Peninsula creates a typically strong undertow and large, often overpowering waves. The magnificence of this wild surf on a vast and undeveloped beach is one of Playa Lapa's most alluring natural attractions.

A resident flock of Scarlet Macaws feeds in the almond trees at the edge of the dunes, hence the name 'Playa Lapa,' meaning 'Beach of the Scarlet Macaw.' There is a migratory path through the canopy above Playa Lapa frequented by large troops of squirrel monkeys, and white faced capuchins can be seen daily feeding in the palm trees surrounding the house. Flocks of Amazon parrots are usually observed in the early morning and again at dusk. A variety of herons and egrets are found regularly feeding in the slough on small fish and lizards, while the shy and peaceable coatimundis play at the edge of the forest, occasionally lumbering from one side of the clearing to the other just off the back deck.

Casa Playa Lapa is the fulfillment of a lifelong dream of its owners. Designed by engineer daughter, it is very comfortable, convenient, eco-friendly, and is situated in a remote part of Costa Rica that is well 'off the grid.' Power is supplied by a hybrid solar / hydroelectric alternative energy system, providing conventional 110V 60-cycle American-ready electrical power. A unique solar hot water system in the roof ensures comfortable bathing in the late acternoon. We also boast broadband satellite Internet and a wireless router to enable our guests to stay in touch with friends and family. High quality cookware, glassware, flatware and linens ensure that all your needs are accommodated. Typical Spanish architectural style security grills have been installed on all the windows and doors to enhance our guest's safety. In addition, bi-fold wooden shutters on the ten windows surrounding the living room permit the exclusion of ocean mist and rain as needed.

A remote getaway, Playa Lapa is truly a unique destination in and of itself. Its proximity to Corcovado National Park, while enhancing its attraction, also ensures its preservation from the tourist development occurring in the beach communities all along Costa Rica's shoreline. For a memorable experience of intimacy with nature, plus personal comfort and convenience, there is really nothing quite like Casa Playa Lapa.

About Helene

Joe and Helene are retired professionals, now living on their farm with their two dogs, one cat, and five horses. They make hay in June, and live at Playa Lapa for four months of the year. When not making hay or basking in the tropical sun, Joe works part time on the farm and Helene manages Playa Lapa.

Helene purchased this house in 2007

Why Helene chose Osa Peninsula

They chose this property for its remoteness, abundance of wildlife, and lack of develment.

the house was designed by their daughter, Julie, with an emphasis on maximizing living space, excellent air flow and great views of the ocean and tropical jungle.

What makes this house unique

Some of the best fishing in the world; Playa Carate is an important turtle nesting beach; close proximity to Corcovado National park, with abundant wildlife right on the property; and of course the relaxed tropical lifestyle.

Guestbook comments from the manager

‘Macaw Beach’ is located near Carate which is at the end-of-the-line for the Osa Peninsula. It’s where the road ends and the real (jungle) life begins.

This Deluxe Oceanfront off-grid wooden home is unlike any other place you’ve been. It’s an excellent location if you are a writer, ecologist, biologist, photographer, famous, not so famous, wanted or unwanted or just darn tired of the rat race and feel a strong desire to just get away from it all. It’s a place for dreamers and yes, dreams do come true and, it’s a paradise for lovers. Spiritual? Then welcome to God’s country. A great place for meditation!

A great stay at Playa Lapa

  • 5 of 5

Our family of 4 had a wonderful stay for a few nights at Playa Lapa. We loved the setting with the crashing waves, great wild life viewing and helpful hosts. The vast stretch of private beach was thoroughly enjoyed. We played in the warm waves during low tide. Walking along the deserted beach was wonderful. We had a great time in the kayaks on the lagoon. The property was beautiful and really nicely maintained by Manuel. We enjoyed picking and eating the delicious fruit and herbs on the property that Phoebe showed us. Phoebe was fabulous with her tips on hikes, and good spots for wildlife spotting. Her dog was also a big hit with our family very sweet! Living off of the solar power worked well, we always had enough power in the evenings. The wifi was down while we were there but we were fine with that.

The deck and hammock were thoroughly enjoyed, a great spot to sit and listen to the wild life and relax.

We would definitely return to this wonderful place. We did a trip to the bird sanctuary which Helene had recommended and we were really glad that we did, very informative and enjoyable.

Thanks Helene, Phoebe an Manuel for sharing this wonderful place with us! We hope to return.

WOW! Part 2 of my review of Playa Lapa

  • 5 of 5

WOW! What a fantastic trip to Costa Rica and unforgettable stay at your unique and beautiful Playa Lapa!! We are so glad we found your place on VRBO. After visiting the nearby lodges, we think your house and property location was the best place to stay for our family of four. We especially liked the privacy of being on our own with the security of having Manuel and Phoebe nearby. We considered them part of our family, they were always so helpful and very discrete. Manuel alerted us to interesting wildlife sightings, especially the baby turtles hatching on the beach in front of your property while Phoebe was away in PJ. Phoebe is such a warm and wonderful person! She was indispensable in arranging our visits to Finca Exotica and Luna Lodge where we were warmly greeted by Monica, Lana and her mother before walking their amazing trails. She communicated with our guides, sometimes changing the dates of our tours to a time better suited to observe the animals or catch fish. She herself is a great guide, sharing her infectious passion for the animals and plants of the Osa. She gave us stems from her aloe vera plant and showed us how to cut and use it on our skin to relieve bites and heat rash. We understand why you treasure her!

We are suffering terribly from Playa Lapa withdrawal!! It is eerily quiet in our home without the exotic jungle sounds and constant pounding surf. We miss the lush vegetation, tropical smells, clean air and humidity. It is soo dry here and looking outside there is no greenery, all is white and the trees look dead. And it is COLD!!

Thanks again for all your wonderful help in planning our trip. Thanks to you we had a fantastic family vacation!

Unforgettable stay at unique, secluded and beautiful Playa Lapa!

  • 5 of 5

After visiting nearby lodges, we definitely think Playa Lapa was the best place to stay with our two adult children. We enjoyed two wonderful weeks at this unique and exotic location. We flew to Puerto Jimenez with Nature Air, rented a Toyota RAV4 (a 4-wheel drive is essential to ford the rivers) from National Car Rental, bought our groceries at supermercado BM and our delicious baked goods at Panaderia Monar. At BM get a styrofoam cooler and a bag of ice for your perishables. We had an excellent, inexpensive lunch ($21 for 4) at Restaurante Delfines by the beach, where we could park under the shade of trees and keep an eye on our car. Then we drove 90 minutes on a bumpy gravel road towards Carate. Arriving at Playa Lapa we instantly fell in love with the location by the ocean and the beautiful casa crafted with exotic local woods. We cooked all our meals on the gas stove. There is a large refrigerator and fully equipped kitchen with lots of counter top space to prepare food. The beds are very comfortable. My spouse and I slept in the master bedroom on the big queen bed, my daughter in the guest bedroom and my son on the futon sofa in the living room that folds out into a double bed. We liked that the house is fully screened to keep biting insects out and the steady breezes flowing, which made sleeping at night comfortable. Lots of small fans are provided to keep cool if needed. Our kids appreciated having wifi internet. It was sunny almost every day, so there was plenty of hot water available in the afternoon (we preferred cold showers) and battery power in the evening to keep a few lights going. Candles are thoughtfully provided in case the power runs out. We used headlamps to read at night and save on battery power. Four kayaks are supplied for use in the nearby lagoon which abounds with birds. Playa Lapa is a naturalist's dream! The sheer diversity of plants and animals is amazing. The sandy beaches stretch for miles in each direction and are deserted. Close by lies Corcovado National Park where we hiked all day with our excellent guide Cristhian. Helene, the owner, was amazing! She patiently answered all our questions, was invaluable in coordinating with the guides to arrange our tours and made us feel welcomed at Playa Lapa. We did a lagoon kayak and night turtle tour with Phoebe, a turtle biologist. She lives on site and is a great guide, sharing her infectious passion for the animals and plants of the Osa. We highly recommend Playa Lapa!!

Relief from winter

  • 5 of 5

This was our first visit to Playa Lapa, third to Osa. We loved the location among the oil palms, wildlife, flowers, and fruit plantings. Awakening to the view of the beach from our bed was exceptional. The daily visits of the macaws to the almond trees between the casa and beach thrilled us. The last evening was special due to the stroll by of the tapir at dusk. Each day provided an adventurous trip. This was a special destination for our winter vacation break.

Our Christmas Vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I enjoyed our six-day stay at the Playa Lapa house. The owners Helene and Joe were very nice and helpful. We bought groceries in Puerto Jimenez for our entire stay and cooked the fish my husband caught to add protein to our meals. (Once for arriving and once for leaving was enough to travel the unpaved road from Puerto Jimenez to/from Carate.)

We had visited the remote Osa Peninsula once before. (My husband is an avid birder.) We stayed in a luxury lodge near the northern border of Corcovado National Park. On this trip we found that we prefer having our own house. The Playa Lapa house was the best choice for us. Kayaking, fishing, hiking, and the pre-planned tours were all great.

Wonderful!

  • 5 of 5

We spent a wonderful week at this house. Playa Lapa is so close to nature - right there outside your door. We were lulled to sleep each night by the ocean, and awoken each morning by the wildlife (the parrots and howling monkeys were great.) Conveniently located to the national forest, and remote enough to truly have some unwinding time away from the hustle and bustle. Kitchen was sufficiently appointed, and plenty of linens to last us throught he week. Manuel and Phoebe are on-site and available to assist at any time. Take a kayak out to the lagoon to visit the crocs, or visit Phoebe's sea turtles. My son had an amazing first morning watching sea turtles hatch. He learned so much about nature and wildlife that it was well worth the drive. Would return.

Carate is a remote community on the Pacific shore of the OSA Peninsula, within hiking distance of Corcovado National Park. Casa Playa Lapa is the only beach front rental home in Carate, just steps from the open Pacific surf. The nearby Pejeperrita lagoon, is fed by a fresh water slough between the beach and the casa. Kayaking on the lagoon is a very popular tour in Carate, with 4 kayaks available to Playa Lapa guests. Hiking trails throughout the community and beyond traverse a variety of ecosystems including the watershed, jungle and higher elevations. Pumas, dantas, jaguarundis, anteaters, coatamundis, many varieties of parrots and shore birds, frogs, reptiles and butterflies can be see on the property and surrounding community. Sea turtle nesting occurs throughout the year. Excellent nature photography, each season with its own exciting species--just sit back on one the breezy decks around the casa and enjoy the show!!
