About Mr. & Mrs. B and E Holden.

Hubby & I moved over to France from Devon to renovate a ruin of an old Chateau. Hubby was a professional housebuilder and thought this would be a challenge. It was and still is, lots of maintenance and gardening, but the most beautiful place to live and share our home with holiday guests. Our two lovely daughters live in the UK with their growing-up children and our son followed with his partner and had two sons born over here. Both working in the building trade, so anyone needing our help and advice are very welcome to come and talk to us.

Mr. & Mrs. B and E Holden. purchased this cottage in 1988

Why Mr. & Mrs. B and E Holden. chose Chalais

A definate challenge, but well worth it. Who wouldn't want the chance of a lifetime to live in a French Chateau.

What makes this cottage unique

The quality of life, the space and the beautiful countryside and friendly natives. The roads are a pleasure to drive along and it goes without saying the French wines are superb and much cheaper than anywhere else. We enjoy a shorter winter and can even sit outside to enjoy a meal at Christmas lunchtime.

Stunning Location

  • 5 of 5
The Chateau and grounds are absolutely stunning. We were welcomed warmly by the owners and offered all the assistance we required to enjoy our one week stay. We had chosen one of the Gite's in the grounds overlooking the lovely pool. The property was clean and well equipped and ideal for a family of 4. Each property has its own garden furniture, barbeque and feel very private. We saw bats, birds of prey, deer and other wild life in the grounds. Swam in the underlit pool until late evening and played table tennis in the barn. There is also a badmington and football field and beautiful walks in the woods and surrounding farmland, if you feel that energetic. If you want to sightsee then the beautiful village of Aubettere with canoe hire and a small lake is a short drive away and Cognac & Bergerac an hour away and worthy of a visit. Despite the secluded feeling of the Chateau the local town of Chalais is within 10 minutes easy walk and has everthing you need for your holiday including regular markets, supermarket and traditional shops. We had a lovely family holiday and would certainly recommend the property.

Owner's Response: We'd like to thank the latest occupants of Le Joli Coin for their kind comments and to say what a pleasure it was to have such a content & pleasant family for our holiday guests. Our little cottage was left spotlessly clean after their departure and we were very sorry to see them leave, needless to say they are most welcome anytime.
I think the layout of this cottage works so well suiting either two couples or a couple with older children.

We have have just returned from a weeks break at Le Chateau de Labaurie in Chalais.
We chose to fly to La Rochelle where we had lunch and spent some time browsing aroung the many shops before driving to Chalais. Our journey was a little over 2 hours but the roads are much quieter and the little villages we passed through along the way were lovely.
The photos of Le Chateau do not do it justice. The size of the of the castle and it's numerous surrounding buildings is immense. We couldn't believe how beautiful it was. A proper fairytale castle.
Bev and Elaine, the owners, met us when we arrived. They are a lovely couple who cannot do enough for you. They recommended places to visit and things to do, however they do not intrude and we only really saw them when they were tending to the gardens or shopping in Chalais.
The cottage we stayed at had a gated patio area with furniture and a barbeque. We spent a great deal either on the patio, around the pool or in the grounds. There is a huge field behind the cottages with football posts and a badminton/volleyball net and a large barn with table tennis tables in. It's ideal for families, particularly with small children as there are no cars. It is very peaceful.
The cottage itself is very well equipped. Just like being at home really. We even used the washing machine so we didnt have as much to do when we got home. The TV with English channels was an added bonus and two bathrooms for a cottage sleeping 4 people was more than we would have expected.
There is a supermarket which takes 5-10 minutes to walk to. We managed to get most things from it but there is a much larger one in the centre of Chalais.
We walked into Chalais most evenings. It took about 25 minutes. There are several small bars/restaurants, all child friendly. We would particularly recommend Le bon humeur in the square. Excellent food and service. Well worth a visit.
We visited Angouleme which is about 50 minutes drive. This is the nearest large town. We also visited some smaller towns on market days.
All in all this was a wonderful break. The castle and grounds are beautiful. Bev and Elaine were great and we had a fantastic time in Chalais. We would definately recommend a visit.

Owner's Response: We are so glad our guests enjoyed their holiday here at Labaurie, and we would like to say thank you for being so kind for taking the trouble and time to write such a splendid review about their stay here.

It was a great pleasure to have met such a nice family who will without doubt have their names included on our ”best clients” list and will be welcome back here any time. We would like to thank Andrew, Rachel and Ellen for choosing Labaurie for their holiday.

Relaxing holiday in beautiful Charente.

We have just returned from a two week stay in this gite. We had a very warm welcome from Elaine on arrival, she was extremely helpful in suggesting restaurants to visit and also where to shop and what the local tipple was!! (pineau).

The gite was clean and had everything that we needed. Having two bathrooms is always a bonus - the only problem we encountered was on our first morning we used all the hot water up - so on subsequent days made sure we didn't leave the shower running all the time!! and then we had enough for the rest of the day including an extra shower in the evening if needed! I would describe the gite as rustic - but it was certainly comfortable enough for our needs. We had a lovely terrace - large table and four chairs, and a huge sun umbrella which was certainly needed at times!! We used the chiminea style barbeque a lot - it was great, my husband really enjoyed cooking on it. We felt very secluded during our stay - it was so quiet at night and very dark!!!! sounds a bit silly but when you are used to street lights at home it is very strange! The only thing that I would have wished for in the gite was a socket nearer a mirror to dry/straighten hair - but I managed with a small mirror propped up on the bed headboard!

As mentioned before we felt very secluded - you could hear the trains travelling through Chalais, but they didn't bother us. A very short car journey down into the town - found lots of lovely shops, fantastic Intermarche (local supermarket) which sold everything and anything! Also a Lidl very near the chateau - market day was an experience, very busy and so much to see - we went on a very hot day so probably would have been better if a little cooler! We tried a few restaurants in Chalais, the pizzeria next to the supermarket which was very good, one of the bar restaurants La Flore not so good - and lastly Relais de Chateau which was in the chateau at the top of the town. Excellent food - 18 euros for a set 3 course lunch - worth every penny, great service - the owner/manager was very charming and knowledgable. It does get very busy so you need to book either for lunch or dinner.

We had some lovely days out at Aubeterre, St Emilion and other local places. Also drove to the coast - lovely beach at St Georges, near Royan but quite busy and touristy so it was nice to come back to our little rustic gite and unspoiled town!

Facilities excellent - lovely pool and terrace, table tennis, football, badminton.

Olivant Family Worksop Summer 2010

Great place, owners available but not obtrusive. Quick to respond to issues and helpful. Place was well equipped, a bit out of town, but not a hike. The facilites enable you to decide how energetic you wish to be, swimming pool, table tennis or badminton all available as also a couple of mountain bikes. Town was fine for a Friday night drink in the square with plenty of entertainment and places to eat.

We enjoyed it, came back relaxed and both Bev & Elaine were marvellous hosts, that could not do enough for their guests.

Recommend the place to anyone with or without family, plenty to do nearby or a little further a field.

Summer memories of a french family

  • 5 of 5
Elaine and Bev Holden have warmly welcome our family in five (!!!) of their chalets of Château de Labaurie between 1st and 15th of August. We have enjoyed the large views on the woods, vineyards, and fields all around the château, the swimming pool in the middle of the chalets, also the individual barbecues, and mostly the peaceful atmosphere of the château...
Chalais is in the heart of a splendid region: Charente and Dordogne, with lovely small cities (Aubeterre, Brantôme...).
We have already recommended the address to many of our friends.
If they choose to spend some holidays in Château de Labaurie, I am sure that they will keep the same excellent impression.
Thank you again, Elaine and Bev.
