Fairytale Chateau de Labaurie originates from the 12th century & stands majestically in 43 acres overlooking a rural market town surrounded by beautiful countryside in the sunny Charente. The Château estate offers B & B in the Chateau and has self contained cottages in the grounds sleeping 8, 5, 4 & 2., The lovely swimming pool is illuminated during the summer evenings throwing magical shadows onto the Louis XV arched bell tower. Explore the enchanting woodland walks in the grounds. Lots of space for children to play, with badminton, table tennis, barn and a half size football field. We offer spacious, comfortable accommodation for couples or families, and are ideally situated to visit the wonderful wine making regions and the Atlantic coast. We are within walking distance to the local town for its shops, restaurants, cinema, tennis courts, river fishing and bar/cafes.

Chalais is in the beautiful rolling countryside on the border of the Dordogne, 50 kms south of Angouleme, a beautiful city with ramparts and lovely churches; and 50 kms north of Libourne, a wonderful place to visit with its picturesque river. Within easy reach of the atlantic coastline with its lovely sandy beaches, the vineyards of Bordeaux, Cognac and Bergerac, St. Emilion and Pomeral, famous for wine and cognac. There are lots of nearby producers of the famous local drink called Pineau, a mixture of Cognac and grapejuice, aged in oak barrels and matured to a delightful nectar of the gods. Not to be missed are the lovely river trips on the meadering river Charente. Close by are shops, bars, cafes, a theatre, a cinema, tennis courts, river fishing, canoeing, horse riding and a most wonderful restaurant in the town's Chateau de Tallyrand, which can only be booked by reserving a table well in advance. Bordeaux and Bergerac airports are only 80 mins. drive away.

The grounds: The estate of Château de Labaurie has 43 acres with delightful woodlands walks and meadows. Badminton grassed court, table tennis, plus a half size football field. The 6 x 12 mtr swimming pool is fenced for safety and is illuminated under the water during the summer evenings throwing shimmering shadows onto the Louis XV bell tower. A magical place for families to gather around giving so much pleasure to all ages for a late evening swim. Nearby the town of Chalais has good restaurants, shops and a weekly street market as well as a popular cinema showing the latest film's. Four day event each summer of an International Horse Show, (free admission). We are ideally placed for visiting the wine making regions of St: Emillion, Bordeaux and Bergerac and also Cognac which is famous for its fine Champagne brandy and first class golf course. Nearest airports are Angoulleme 50 kms, Bergerac 80 kms and Bordeaux 80 kms.

Charente/Border of Dordogne.: There are four cottages overlooking the pool, sleeping 8, /5, /4 and 2. We have 3 apartments in the chateau available for rental, the Lamballerie Suite sleeping 6-8 in 3 bedrooms, The Cavalier Suite for 4 people and The South Turret, a full wing with 5 bedrooms. Chateau de Labaurie estate is a wonderful venue for all ages to enjoy the company of other families on holiday and yet retaining an atmosphere of peacefulness with lots of space and no overcrowding. Chateau de Labaurie originates from the 12th century and stands majestically overlooking the rural town of Chalais, located in the unspoiled region of the S.W. Charente, renowned for its sunny micro climate. We are ideally placed for visiting the wine making regions of St. Emilion, Bordeaux and Bergerac and also Cognac for its renowed brandy. Only 90 minutes from airports of Bergerac and Bordeaux and 1 hour from Angouleme the recently opened airport. Ferry discounts for all confimed bookings.

Changeover days Friday and Saturday.: High and mid seasons have a Friday and Saturday changeover day but are flexible at other times.

Golf: Angouleme golf course 50 kms. Local one 30 mins run from here. Superb 18 hole at Cognac approx. 40 mins distance.

A Holiday to Remember

20 years ago we first visited Labourie in the very early stages of renovation of the Chateau when we wondered how on earth anyone could be brave enough to try to restore it! We loved it even then and were so pleased to return in 2007 especially to meet our wonderful hosts Bev and Elaine again,and to see the amazing transformation of the Chateau.The warmth of our welcome was second to none and the meal we enjoyed in the lovely dining room that first evening was fit for a king. We opted to stay in La Jolie which was delightful for Bed and Breakfast with excellent facilities for self catering.The water was always piping hot and it was all spotlessly clean and we had several lovely days either exploring the beautiful grounds and surrounding countryside or basking in the sunshine by the side of the swimming pool. Each morning Elaine would arrive with our breakfast of fresh croissants and fruit We were only sorry we could not stay longer.The peace was bliss!
We know there is plenty to do in the area,good places at which to eat and the town of Chalais is delightful. We cannot recommend Labourie highly enough and neither can we wait to return

We couldn't believe how far we'd travelled to find our host was originally from our home town, Bev and Elaine are wonderful hosts who make you feel so welcome and are on hand if you have any queries/problems, but leave you to get on with your holiday. The setting of the chateau is second to none and when you see it from the roadway you think "wow", this has been worth the long drive. We stayed in Le Marechal Ferrant the first cottage on the right, it had a private garden with sun beds, table and chairs and bbq. The four of us really enjoyed the privacy but enjoyed sharing the swimming pool with other families. The surrounding area is lovely and Chalais is only a 20 minute walk away. The chateau on the other hill is also a must for exploring. Cognac, Lebourne, Aubetere and the surrounding countryside is a must to see. We hope to visit again soon.

Paradise

First of all we had no expectations whatsoever and kept an open mind only knowing that what we needed was rest, good food and no stress. We came to the perfect spot! The Chateau de Labaurie is a wonderful holiday location and for us it was just what we needed and more. We had the luxury of leaving our kids at home and enjoyed the time to ourselves amongst the beautiful surroundings and this magnificent property owned by it's warm and hospitable owners, Bev and Elaine Holden.

We stayed in one of the cottages and it was comfortable, cosy and all the basic amenities one needs in a self contained set up while on holiday and the pool was divine.

The locals from the Chalais area and surrounding were friendly, helpful and in general hospitable people.

We are definitely coming back next summer if not sooner. Thank you for making our holiday a perfect one.

A Briliant Getaway!

Chateau de Labaurie is so beautifully situated on the edge of Chalais in extensive grounds, which have been developed beautifully into a tranquil location. All of our very large family enjoyed the use of the pool and it was so nice to share it with other families who were on holiday there too, which kept everyone happy. The site is small enough to be peaceful, but large enough not to feel isolated - for us, a perfect combination! The Chateau is also well located to visit the local markets and we particularly enjoyed a canoe ride along the river from Aubeterre and some nearby lake beaches. We can highly recommend the Chateau de Labaurie as a relaxed place to take your family away on holiday.

Peaceful and refreshing

The chateau and grounds are the perfect embodiment of France. The Joli Coin was simple and clean with everything we needed for a comfortable stay. Bev & Elaine had thought of everything to entertain lively children (large pool, badminton/volley ball nets, football pitch & undercover tabel tennis/darts with all equipment) and energetic adults or to allow those who wished it peace, tranquility & relaxation. They are friendly and helpful hosts who are there if needed but do not intrude. We had a fabulous time and sincerely hope to return
