Striking views, tennis court, private sand beach. A traditional Maine camp for an extraordinary family vacation. This unique cottage sits high on on the side of Rockledge hill overlooking the Ocean and the mouth of the Kennebec River. Sit on the deck or inside by the picture windows and be entranced by the spectacular scenery. Walk the soft sand beach that extends for miles. Play tennis on our exclusive private tennis court. Swim, surf, kayak, sail, beach comb. Some say the fishing here is the best on the east coast.

This cottage was custom built by the owner's father more than fifty years ago and has been lovingly maintained and modernized by the family. Fully equipped kitchen with new stove, refrigerator and microwave, dishes and cookware. One bathroom with shower. Master bedroom with queen sized bed. Two cozy bedrooms with twin bunk beds. Tennis: Enjoy tennis with ocean views and breezes on Popham's only tennis court. This is a private court. Its use is exclusive. It is not available to the renters at other cottages.

Rustic and warm: The summer cottage has electirc heaters in the bathroom, master bedroom, living room, sunporch and kitch, making it cozy in June and September. Electric blanket provided for master bedroom.

History: The property is the romantic site where the historic Rockledge Hotel was located.

Popham Beach is renowned for its wide sandy beach, beautiful views of nearby islands and excellent swimming. Kids will love exploring the ruins of the historic Fort Popham and Fort Baldwin. Popham Beach was the location for the striking coastal scenes in Kevin Costner's movie 'Message in a Bottle.'

Popham is served by the Portland International Jetport, a hour and fifteen minute drive away. Rental cars are available at the airport. Train service also runs from Boston to Portland. The Portland train station is next to the Concord trailways bus terminal. Buses run from both the Boston airport and the Portland bus terminal to Bath. Call Concord Trailways for schedule information. There is no public transportation between Bath and Popham. A car is necessary.

Other Activities: tennis on exclusive private court; kayaking; trips to local lighthouse.

  • The master bedroom has a queen sized bed. The two other bedrooms have bunkbeds. The lower twin sized bunk beds are suitable for adults and children. The upper bunk beds are suitable for people old enough to be in a top bunk (6 years old and up) and small enough to fit under the eves. The upper bunks are not suitable for a person who is afraid of confined spaces. The access to one of the bunk rooms requires climbing steep ladder-like stairs. Older kids love this room; it is like having their own tree house, with majestic views out to sea. The cottage is not suitable for persons who have difficulty with or who cannot safely climb stairs.

Great Beach House

It was nice to have everything there in the house, all you needed were your beach towels, personal items and what ever groceries you wanted. Short walk (or can drive) to Persey's Gen. store and one of my favorites "Spinney's" restaurant, excellent seafood, food three meals a day if you want. The kitchen was very nice with all the necessities. Good quality water which is a huge plus on the ocean. Very private with spectacular views. Right on the beach and very close to both low tide sand bars for Wood Isl. and Fox Isl., lovely to walk out to them. Although I wanted to be away, it was good to be able to have my cell phone work as well. Popham Beach is the best beach in Maine in my opinion.

Rustically Beautiful

This lovely, yet somewhat rustic cottage provided a wonderful setting for our family in our favorite coastal place. We found the cottage to be clean and well stocked with all that we needed for a great week at the beach. The cottage has great ocean views from most rooms and the small but cozy living room is a good place to linger, listen and watch the waves roll in on the beach. The upstairs bunk room felt like a tree house and was great for our sons but not recommended for young children as the steps are steep. Overall, we had a great week. We found, as always, Percys to be great for take out and lobster.
