Manchester with its' great dining and outlet shopping center is about 25 minutes to the south. Rutland is an equal distance to the north.
Lovely property. Truly in the middle of nowhere (even the road leading up to the property will mean you'll need more than just a town car). You can't see another building, let alone another person. Lovely. Plus a great kitchen if you like cooking.
We had a great time. The property was well maintained and stocked. The driveway is steep, but even after it snowed, someone was there right away to clear and put sand down. No problem getting up or down. It was a litte far from Okemo (about an hour because of snow on road) but the rates were reasonable. The owner responded quickly to my inquiries. I would definitely stay there again.
We 4 adults from Tennessee and New Jersey were truly awe struck by the lovely leaves and the setting of our "log-cabin". We loved the tranquility and loveliness.
I have several recommendations for those who would enjoy this rental.
Do try to go to the Maple Sugar Restaurant recommended in the cabin instructions book. The name of the restaurant is in the front pocket. It is only open on Saturday and Sunday until 1pm. It is an adventure and treasure hunt to find it. The directions are very good. It is about 20 to 30 min and well worth while, as the food is quite good and the maple syrup is, well, it is Vermont and they do 'make' their own and it is sooooo goood. You can even see a video about what it actually takes to achieve this marvel. If you are here in the Spring and up to the end of October, do go to Ft. Ticonderoga in Ticonderoga, NY. (about an hour away) Check out the 7 min. ferry from Vt. to NY and either return that way or down through NY and over to Vt. Check this out on the internet... I suspect you will be very glad. And do take the option of going up Mt. Defiance. Unless visibility is bad, you will be very glad you did!! We had pizza at the Pizza shop on the main road in town. It was really really very good! Manchester, Vt. is quite fun. And... Bennington is wonderful! We found Robert Frosts' home in Shaftsbury on 7A. (Just before you get to Bennington) We were very glad that "we stopped by" (802-447-6200). And we did the Bennington Battle Monument, the 2nd tallest in the United States. ( and they have an elevator)
Closer to home is Lake St. Catherine... also very nice. One more... Ma and Pa's in Granville (noted in the handbook) Really fun and good! And the Well's country store.
Do be aware that the drive up to the cabin is indeed relatively steep. So take heed of the winter instructions.
Kim and Bruce (the caretakers) are available and very helpful.
I was to discover that the pictures on Homeaway did not do justice to what I found when I got to this cabin. It was the most beautiful, most amazing place I could ever dream of. I had my son, daughter-in-law, 2 grandchildren and my daughter and there was plenty of room for us all. The kitchen was completely supplied with everything & more, there were loads of nice linens and blankets and pillows. We were lucky enough to have been there for a week of every kind of weather you could have (sunny, warm, 80 degree days, rain, wind, and, yes, even snow!! The cabin was so comfortable and cozy, we all relaxed more than we have in ages. The caretaker, Bruce, was a true asset. I know that we certainly want to return to Paul & Suzanne's cabin, on top of the mountain. We took home the best memories ever. Thanks for making this place available for us to share, in the magnificent mountains of Vermont.
I organized a trip for my husband's birthday with five of our friends - each person had their own bed to sleep in and space to sprawl out. Great table space for everyone to sit comfortably for breakfast and dinner and enough bathrooms so no one had to fight for a shower. The kitchen was stocked with everything we needed for homemade meals, the basement had a great assortment of fun games (board games AND pool/pingpong table), and lots of comfy couches to relax on while enjoying the fireplace.
My only true concern with the house was the driveway - it's MUCH steeper and difficult to navigate than the photos display, especially when we woke up to a dusting of snow. A Ford Explorer with chains on the wheels is available at the bottom of the driveway and across the street, for use only by the guests of the home. Luckily we didn't get more than just very little snow while we were there and did not need to use the provided car.
Otherwise, we had a truly excellent stay and we will absolutely be back! The owner, Paul is great with communication and was very helpful with giving details about the house. We can't wait to go back!
Annually, I get a group of friends together to go camping and for the last 3 years it has rained on us, so this year we decided that we would find a cabin. This Vermont cabin was perfect. The listing description is right on. This secluded home was ideal for our group needs. Having all the amenities possible and every time you forgot something from home sure enough the house had it someone in its many closets. Property was well maintained, cleaned and spacious. Amazing hiking trails right in your own backyard. The owner Paul was very nice and responsive to any and all my questions. We would totally recommend this home and will be booking again for the summer of 2014.
Our group enjoyed many long hiking trails on the property itself. Cooked breakfast, lunch and dinner in a kitchen with all amenities, even made our traditional Beer Can Chicken recipe on grill provided. Enjoyed the surround sound equipment with movies and music all weekend. Visited the County store just down the road where they have an incredible apple pie, cold cuts and of course Vermont Maple Syrup.
2 thumbs up!
Beautiful remote area of Vermont near Lake St. Catherine just 15 minutes north of Dorset. 100 acres of private property surround this typical Vermont chalet type 4 bedroom log cabin. Hiking, fishing and hunting out your backdoor. Boating, swimming, skiing, sailing and golfing just 5 minutes away at Lake St. Catherine. Skiing at Killington, Okemo and Stratton only a short drive away. Shopping at Manchesters' famous outlet center is only minutes away. Movies, theaters, museums and many other cultural activities and attractions are within short driving distances.
Golf: A very nice course is locate at Lake St. Katherine just a few minutes away. Nestled in the mountains this course provides a very Serene challenging setting for a great round of golf. Novice to pro, you're sure to like the course and it's rarely crowded.
