'PINE SHADOWS CHALET': MOUNTAIN CABIN IN THE WOODS WITH VIEWS

'Pine Shadows', located in Columbus, NC, S.E. of Hendersonville, is a wooded mountain chalet A-frame with 3 BR/ 2 BA, wrap-around decks, a 25' ceiling, open floor plan, and cozy wood fireplace.

Tucked in the western North Carolina foothills of the Blue Ridge and Great Smoky Mountains, the cabin is nestled on three private acres in the woods with westerly long-range views in winter and spring and lovely gorge and woodland views in summer and fall. Columbus, NC is known for its good weather year round, making the house easily accessible at nearly any time of the year.

The chalet is four miles from Tryon, NC and 10 miles from Lake Lure, 22 miles from Hendersonville, and 43 miles from Asheville. 'Pine Shadows' is a rustic cabin with all modern conveniences. It is a short drive to the higher elevations and attractions of Asheville and Hendersonville.

In response to several evaluations, the living room TV has now been relocated to a more viewer-friendly wall and a larger flat screen TV is installed in the master loft.

Our family rented a variety of homes in the mountains of western NC over the years. We loved staying in vacation rentals, so when we found Pine Shadows Chalet and fell in love with it in 2003, we took the plunge into second home ownership. After a year we decided to share our wonderful vacation home with other families. It has worked out fabulously, and the people who have stayed have been top-notch!

For twenty years, I was professor of fine arts and humanities at Florida State College in Jacksonville, FL. My spouse is a retired journalist of The Associated Press and has recently published his first novel. So the chalet has a full library of books and music and is decorated with an artist's touch. Come enjoy our wonderful place.

Karen Armel purchased this cabin in 2003

We keep our beautiful home well-maintained, updated, and guest-friendly. Your great experience visiting Pine Shadows Chalet is our top concern. Our guests -- some of whom return year after year -- say it best in their reviews. Please view them.

We instantly loved Pine Shadows Chalet because of its surrounding pastoral beauty. We liked that the home was at the top of a private road and off the beaten track yet in close proximity to the attractions and shopping in Hendersonville and Asheville. The house was custom-built in 1981 with a 25' apex in the living room at the top of the 5000-brick fireplace. We loved the many angles of the walls and roof lines, the interior brick walls, the natural oak doors, and the many upgrades too numerous to list. We were instantly drawn to the gorgeous westerly view from the living room-dining room, all the natural light, and the 'good karma' of the chalet. The owner/builders lived at Pine Shadows Chalet from 1981 - 2003. We are the home's lucky second owners.

Wonderful, Quiet Getaway

  • 5 of 5
I stayed in the chalet with a few friends and two of our dogs, and all of us had a wonderful time. The chalet is in a beautiful, wooded area and, although we were too comfortable relaxing at the chalet for the majority of our stay and didn't explore the area, the town of Columbus looked very cute and quaint.

The house had just about everything we needed. We cooked almost all our meals and didn't have trouble finding the tools we needed to do so. The owner was also wonderful and responsive as our vacation approached, and checked in right afterward to be sure everything had gone well.

I would recommend this place to anyone looking for a quiet vacation in the wooded mountains!

Beautiful Chalet

  • 5 of 5
This is our 3rd. time staying in this beautiful chalet.
When you step into the home, you feel instant peace and tranquility. The home is beautifully furnished and very clean. The view from the wall of windows is very pretty and very private. If you stay at Pine Shadows, be sure to go to Saluda and have lunch at the Purple Onion, its great. Also, definitely visit the Biltmore Estate. Plan on spending the day that way you have enough time to walk through the beautiful gardens and go through the amazing home. Karen is such a great host. This was our 48th anniversary and she was kind enough to surprise us with a bottle of Champagne. You can't go wrong staying in Pine Shadows, it wonderful. Thanks Karen for another great stay.

Wonderful Get A Way!

  • 5 of 5
Our family had a wonderful time and the cabin was perfect with everything we needed and Karen called to make sure we had everything we needed. From my mother in law to my 13 year old son, my college age daugter, high school son, my husband and myself, we ALL enjoyed our stay and all the things to do in the area. We hiked, viewed magnificant waterfalls, saw historic sites, ate wonderful food and no one wanted to leave! I can not wait to return! The owners go above and beyond to make the place perfect!

Great!

  • 5 of 5
We have always been afraid of booking through the internet but this was a pleasant surprise. The property was outstanding. Peaceful, private, and relaxing. We used it as a home base for our excursions to the Biltmore and Blue Ridge Parkway but would have enjoyed just hanging out. I would recomend this to anyone that wants to stay in the area. The property was clean and well maintained. The pantry and refrigerator were even stocked with some of those things you usually forget when you make to trip to the grocery store.
Enjoyed reading Karen's list of "guidelines".
