About Karen Armel

Our family rented a variety of homes in the mountains of western NC over the years. We loved staying in vacation rentals, so when we found Pine Shadows Chalet and fell in love with it in 2003, we took the plunge into second home ownership. After a year we decided to share our wonderful vacation home with other families. It has worked out fabulously, and the people who have stayed have been top-notch!

For twenty years, I was professor of fine arts and humanities at Florida State College in Jacksonville, FL. My spouse is a retired journalist of The Associated Press and has recently published his first novel. So the chalet has a full library of books and music and is decorated with an artist's touch. Come enjoy our wonderful place.

Why Karen Armel chose Hendersonville

We keep our beautiful home well-maintained, updated, and guest-friendly. Your great experience visiting Pine Shadows Chalet is our top concern. Our guests -- some of whom return year after year -- say it best in their reviews. Please view them.

What makes this cabin unique

We instantly loved Pine Shadows Chalet because of its surrounding pastoral beauty. We liked that the home was at the top of a private road and off the beaten track yet in close proximity to the attractions and shopping in Hendersonville and Asheville. The house was custom-built in 1981 with a 25' apex in the living room at the top of the 5000-brick fireplace. We loved the many angles of the walls and roof lines, the interior brick walls, the natural oak doors, and the many upgrades too numerous to list. We were instantly drawn to the gorgeous westerly view from the living room-dining room, all the natural light, and the 'good karma' of the chalet. The owner/builders lived at Pine Shadows Chalet from 1981 - 2003. We are the home's lucky second owners.

“Wonderful and a great deal!”

  • 4 of 5

Our stay at Pine Shadows Chalet was wonderful. We got to the house and all exclaimed, “Wow”, and when we entered, we kept saying, “Wow”. I e-mailed our hostess right away to tell her how impressed we were with the home. It’s so pretty and at the same time, so comfy, cozy, homey. We had to run right out to dinner at the Hare and Hound in Landrum, SC, which was a quick 15 minute drive…but we didn't want to leave! It was a perfect place to unwind, and we all slept marvelously that first night.

The next day we attended a wedding in Landrum, but only after shopping at the nearby store, where everyone was so kind and pleasant. The wedding was fantastic, but we still looked forward to returning to our lovely Chalet to unwind and for another deep sleep.

Everyone who came for the wedding left on Sunday, but we had chosen to stay in Columbus one more day, and it was a great choice. We bought food to make a nice dinner in the well-appointed kitchen, then went for a walk around Tryon, NC (about 5 minutes from Columbus). We made our dinner, relaxed and watched a movie, and then had a third great night’s sleep.

When it was time to leave on Monday, we didn't want to go. If we are ever in the area again, we will surely stay at Pine Shadow’s Chalet. Our hostess couldn't have been nicer and said contact her right away if there were any issues, but there were none. I was so pleasantly surprised at how nice the home was and what a great idea it was to book Pine Shadows Chalet! Thank you, Karen!

Home away from home

  • 5 of 5

This quiet little place has all the comforts of home. It is very private. While we were out on the deck, we saw some deer in the woods behind the house. It was a very welcoming place. We were there for my Best Friend's surgery and she was able to relax and recuperate. It is very close to town so you don't have to travel far if you are in need of anything. There was a pizza place we tried and it has ruined me for any other pizza around my home town. It had Brick in the name. I can't wait to go back. I would definitely recommend this place to anyone wanting to get away to the mountains. It is big enough to fit several families. I loved the cozy fireplace.

Owner's Response: It was a special privilege to provide a safe and healing place for you, your best friend, and the family and friends who traveled with her in support. Please do return when your time is more your own and you can enjoy the house as a true vacation spot. Your favorite pizza place is The Brick. I agree with your evaluation of the pizza, too! Thank you so much for choosing Pine Shadows!

great location

  • 5 of 5

wonderful place, good location, close to all kinds of activities and places of interest. Ashville close by with Biltmore Estate and winery , white water rafting, zip lines, waterfalls, mountains, wildlife just name it.

Biggest secret is the road up the mountain above the chalet close by , where there is viewing in many directions and a really high waterfall.

Little town of Colombus is great for all supplies and weekend street market.

Nearby towns are wonderful little places and different attractions everywhere. Went for great lunch in Tryon at a French restaurant own by French chef. Met nothing but nice people everywhere.

The owner was very helpful and information provided spot on.

I would recommend this place weather looking for quiet places or outdoor activity.
