Cliff and I have always loved the Big Island and planned to retire here one day. In 2006 we decided to purchase a home here. We spent many weekends looking at different homes. When I walked into Ohia Plantation House I knew this was the home for us. Of course it was not not as you see it now. But after 3 months of hard work we were finally able to open our home to our guests. Our dream to have a special place for our guests, a home that is filled with love and Aloha.
Bernadette Boteilho purchased this house in 2006
Volcano has a wonderful cool climate. It is just minutes away from the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park.
This is a WONDERFUL vacation home. You really have thought of everything. This was the most comfortable bed too! Classy all the way around.
We appreciated how close it was to the park. We highly recommend the Kilauea Iki hike and go to the Jagger Museum at night. The Halemaumau Crater was glowing from the lava below in the steam - Not To Miss!
Off to the other side of the island but will definitely miss Ohia Plantation House. Hope to come back someday!
We had such a wonderful stay at Ohia Plantion House. Everything was so perfect! The hawaiiian decor, fresh flowers and fruit made for such a warm welcome. Not to mention the added comfort of the warm fireplace and extra comfortable beds . The location was very close to the volcano which was exaclty what we were there for. I will be back real soon to enjoy this home away from home.
My husband and I came here for our honeymoon and are so glad we did. First off, I would like to say the house is BEAUTIFUL. As other reviewers have stated, the owners did a great job in thinking about the details of the house. They provide books, board games, some movies, bath robes, washer and dryer, and some kitchen essentials including fruit, condiments, coffee. It was all great stuff! The house is very cold as that area gets cold quickly on rainy days and at night but they do provide several heaters. In addition, there is a fire place. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it to work the one night because the wood might have been a little wet from the humidity but the other night it worked really well. Regardless, we had the heaters to help us out. Lastly the location is great if you are going to visit the park. Literally a 5 min drive. We were able to go during the day and then come back at night to see the lava with no issues. We felt sooo relaxed in the house and would def. come back!!
We live in Kona and have a 2-year old. We've been going to Volcano for years and stayed in many places there. This one is by far the best we have found! The house is furnished and cleaned immaculately with antique furniture and in the Hawaiian plantation style. Very comfortable beds, kitchen stocked with everything you need and beyond, quiet location that feels as if you're in your own private forest, firewood provided, hot tub on the wrap-around lanai, bathrobes, tons of towels, crib and highchair for babies, etc! We were thrilled with this place and the location is perfect for visiting the park and exploring Volcano Village. Bernie and Cliff obviously put lots of thought and effort into this home. There were fresh flowers in every room and a huge basket of local fruits and bread as well as oatmeal, coffee, tea, hot chocolate, and more. I know that this house will definitely be our future destination for all trips to Volcano. Mahalo to Bernie and Cliff for providing such a lovely oasis in Volcano!
We stayed here for 5 days (half our time on the island) and we wished it could have been longer! Our group included my husband and I, my father-in-law, and our two best friends and their one year old. There was plenty of space for the 6 of us to hang out, nap, lounge, and enjoy the surroundings. Having a cool house to sleep in at night was such a blessing after some quite hot days down near the shore in Volcano NP and along the east coast. The beds were very comfortable (as others have mentioned) and the kitchen is very easy to use. The open floor plan is so nice. You would NEVER know there are other houses around! It is so close to the park that you can pop home for lunch if you want. Everything was wonderful and we felt the Aloha spirit each moment we spent there.
We felt a tremendous sense of Aloha as soon as we entered this home. The owners have taken considerable care in making it a comfortable and welcoming place to stay. Our family of 5 stayed for 3 nights and wish we could have stayed longer. It was in a very peaceful neighborhood convenient to our travels to the volcano and to the areas north and south. We were able to quickly run over to see the crater glow at night-- not to be missed! The vegetation around the house was lush and made us feel very secluded (a good thing!). We appreciated the comfortable beds with cozy linens on the cool nights. Such a change from baking on the kohala coast! The owner was very nice, easy to work with, responsive to requests and let us know to grocery shop in Hilo before arriving. Because we cook most of our meals in to save money, not having a dishwasher was a minor inconvenience. I felt the kitchen could use a few more implements But, not everyone travels that way and it would not deter me from renting this place again in a heartbeat! The basket of local fruits and breads was wonderful! Mahalo!
