Outstanding seclusion

  • 3 of 5
The rustic cabin is exactly as advertised. Beautiful location about a short walk down to the Smith River. Chairs and lounges were provided to sit on the banks. Kitchen well-equipped, bedroom small, but comfortable. Low ceilings throughout. If you like bears, you will love the theme of the artifacts throughout the cabin. Hot tub on deck was a special treat. Organic garden pickings a delight. We had an anxious beginning to our stay, not knowing exactly where to go. We called all day long, but no one answered. We thought we could find it from the pictures on the web site - but it is in a secluded spot you could never find without a map. We went into a local market (only one in Gasquet) and it took about 4 customers together to figure out what place we might be looking for. One of them, a former forest ranger, led us to a dirt road descending switch back for about 20 minutes to arrive at the Middlefork Ranch. There was no one there, so we just picked a cabin - the door was open, and the rooms looked like the ones on the web site, so we settled in. Kris later apologized, but it would have been nice to have compensated a pretty stressful day with a bottle of wine or something that recognized the inconvenience we endured because she forgot to send us a map. I called the night before we left to make arrangements to help us with our luggage when we left in the morning, but again, never heard back from her. Fortunately her husband Mike was around and carried our luggage over the bridge to our car. We usually like to be left alone when we travel, but a little more communication with our hosts would have been appreciated. All that being said, we loved the place and had a beautiful time exploring the redwoods.

Owner's Response: Hi Steven,
I'm glad that overall you enjoyed your stay. I sent an email on April 14, 2014 with the directions along with my cell phone number in case I wasn't here 2 months before you were scheduled to arrive. I also ask that people contact me by email if I don't answer on my home phone. My caretaker met you after you arrived, and I'm glad that it all worked out. I'm sorry for your stressful day, but you acted like it wasn't a big deal when we talked. Part of the adventure! I didn't call you the night before you left because I didn't get your message until after you were sleeping, and didn't want to wake you. We had already talked in person about my helping the day before so I didn't think that it was an issue. I asked my husband to help with the luggage at the time that you requested, so it wasn't like he just happened by. Again I am sorry for your stressful day.

Great place to spend the holidays

  • 5 of 5
The Rustic Retreat at the Middlefork Ranch was an ideal place for spending the holidays as we were looking for a quiet, peaceful, and beautiful location. The cabin was the perfect size for two of us, very clean and comfy, and with lots of channels on cable, good internet and phone access, we could keep in touch with the outside world when we wanted to. Kris and Mike were excellent hosts providing fresh egg and winter squash, as well as a couple of rides in the golf cart to help carry groceries or our gear over the bridge between the cabin and our car. (Thanks to Laura as well.) The welcoming committee of Nellie - the Jack Russell Terrier, Mattie - the Chocolate Lab, and Vivian - the Bassett Hound, did provide some great entertainment and were there to see us off each morning and welcome us back each night. We highly recommend the Rustic Retreat cabin whether you take the 20 minute, windy gravel road drive in, or park the car and walk the bridge to the ranch. Either way, it's a lovely place to hang out. Thanks for the great hospitality.

A wonderful vacation

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just got home after 9 nights at the rustic retreat. The cabin was perfect for the two of us. We did not drive in the back way but parked on the other side of the river and walked over the bridge. We let them know when we were arriving and they helped us get all of our things over to the cabin. The cabin is secluded and private. The deck outside overlooks the river and the wonderful garden that we were able to use, what a treat! Some of the things that made it a great place to stay was the Chocolate Lab Mattie who came and visited with us every morning and evening as well as the Hot Spring hot tub and the gas grill on the deck. The bridge is easy to cross and the walk to get there goes through a beautiful spot with ducks, ginny hens and geese. Just an amazing place to come to after a day of hiking in the Redwoods. I would recommend going into Crescent city for groceries, really not that far and the road to get there goes through a beautiful part of the redwoods, all kinds of groves along the way. The Oregon Cave in Cave Junction Oregon is only 35 miles away and was an unexpected highlight. The area is so full of things to do you will wish you had more time! Kris and Mike have made a beautiful place on the Smith River.

Great Place for a Couple

  • 5 of 5
Our stay in the Rustic retreat was great, all that we could ask for, a great place for a couple on vacation:
* the hot tub was wonderful on cool nights after hikes in the nearby parks - and private
* the bed was comfortable
* the kitchen was modern and well supplied, with full size appliances, plus a grill on the deck. Coffee and other staples were provided. There is a Safeway 15 minutes away in Crescent City for the rest.
* the setting is great,
* our hosts were friendly and helpful
* new flat paneled TV with cable. No ESPN, but a lot of movie channels

All in all, it was everything we hoped for, and the only reason I wouldn't recommend it, is to keep it secret so we can rent it again next year.

vacation at Rustic Retreat

  • 5 of 5
Last August, I had the privilige of staying in the "Rustic Retreat" It is everything they say, and then some. I can't tell enough what a wonderful rest I recieved, and the peace and tranquillityis beyond measure. Kris and Mike have thought of everything you will need for a wonderful getaway. You won 't even want to leave there to do other things. Fresh fruits, and veggie's , the river , the bonfires, at night, even the thoughtfulness of putting chaise lounges in the shallow part of the river, so you can unwind, read, take a nap, have a glass of wine, and listen to the sound of the river going by, with you right in it. It is undescribable.! Kris and Mike are wonderful as your host and hostess. All you have to do is mention what you would like to have and they have it for you. All I can say is you have to stay there sometime, and I promise you , you will never want to leave. Thank you and God bless you both and your families. Kris and Mike , you are awesome. Love, Maria Lunetta
