Beyoglu is a district located on the European side of Istanbul, separated from the historic peninsula of Constantinopolis by the Golden Horn. Known as Pera during the Middle Ages until the early 20th century and the establishment of the Turkish Republic. The district encompasses other neighborhoods located north of the Golden Horn, including Galata, Tophane, Cihangir, Şişhane, Tepebaşı, Tarlabaşı, Dolapdere and Kasımpasa, Beyoglu is connected to the old city center with the Galata Bridge and Unkapanı Bridge passing over the Golden Horn. Beyoglu is the most active art, entertainment and night life centre of Istanbul.
