MAXIMUM COMFORT AND RELAXATION

  • 5 of 5
My husband and I just returned from eight blissful days in this cozy house, and we already can't wait to go back. This house is so comfortable, so well-equipped, that we could completely relax, since our needs were so well met. Since it's November, we loved the woodstove's gentle heat. It rained a few times hard enough to hear the patter on the open pine ceiling, and always, we could hear the gentle sound of the waves. We needed a relaxing vacation, and in this house, we certainly got it. Very good beds, wonderful bedding.

The location couldn't be better, secluded in the woods and so close to the beach that even I, with a knee injury, could manage it every day. We only saw a few scattered people, and only at dog-walking times; the other times, we had it all to ourselves. Wonderful beach to walk on, photograph, explore, daydream on.

It's ideally close to everything needed, too - all the shops, restaurants, and galleries of Newport, and the smaller, more casual places of Waldport and Yachats. You'll need a full week - or more! - to really get the most out of this location.

We've been spending a week a year in Newport for years, and have stayed in other places--but now we've found our Newport home for as long as Ralph and Ingrid will let us keep coming!

LOVED IT! KID FRIENDLY

  • 5 of 5
We picked Seal Rock for the tide pools for our 3 year old daughter, and we were not disappointed! Pictures do not do this beach justice! The house was perfect for us, warm and cozy, well equipped, and kid friendly touches like DVDs, beach themed books for kids, ocean puzzle, and fun picnic style kitchen seating. She was happy- so we were happy! We appreciated the extra towels, spices in the kitchen, tea, and cast iron cookware! We will be back!

Owner's Response: I'm so glad the house provided a comfortable and fun place for your young family to stay. Thank you for letting us know and for this lovely review, Heather. It's heartening for us to know that the special nature retreat we used to enjoy with our own daughter in years past, other people can now enjoy, as well, with their own children. Please come again, and tell your friends about us.

VERY COZY

  • 5 of 5
My dad rented this cozy little home by the sea as a gift to my little family. And it was perfect. A quick walk and we were hand in hand on the beach watching our son find shells and starfish. We stood at the kitchen sink and watched the sun sink through trees and disappear beyond the waves. The fireplace added to romance of our anniversary get away. Not too far away was newport's historic bayfront.
Plush pillows and warm inviting bedding with the sounds of the ocean killed into a deep slumber. It felt heavenly...not like invading on someone's private dwelling...this felt like home!

Owner's Response: What a nice father you have, who knows what you enjoy and who found our place for your anniversary present. We loved hearing that you enjoyed the very things that "sold us" on this place for our own retreat, when our own daughter was young. Hope to see you again someday. and thank you for writing such a lovely review.

3RD TIME STAY SHOULD SAY IT ALL

  • 5 of 5
My wife and I absolutely love this house, this location, and this beach. This was our 3rd time staying here and its almost starting to feel like home. We have looked at many other homes in lots of other areas and just cannot find one to beat this. This is halfway between Newport and Yachats (with the wonderful Waldport just minutes to the south). We have spent much time in Yachats at its various dining establishments, all of which we love. The only down side here, is that we would like to come back during the first part of 2014 but it looks like the house is booked solid until summer.

Owner's Response: Thanks so much, Amos, for choosing to stay a third time at our Seal Rock Hideaway. And thank you for this stellar review. We take great pride and pleasure in our home away from home, and I'm glad it feels like home to you, too. As to next year -- we're open again in May. This is our first long-term renter, over the winter months. Hope you are able to come again sometime between May and October!

OUR SECOND ENJOYABLE STAY

  • 5 of 5
I just returned from a very enjoyable stay at the Seal Rock Hideaway, our second time staying there. There had been some upgrades, WiFi, a new couch, etc., but really very much the same place we enjoyed so much 3 years ago.

The beach is wonderful and a very short walk away. We enjoyed a nice fire in the wood burring stove each evening after sightseeing and shopping in one of the nicest stretches of the Oregon Coast.

Near the end of our stay, Ingrid contacted us, very concerned because a prior renter had just posted a review and complained of a strong odor in the house. Fearing an animal had died under the house or deck she had contacted someone to come and deal with it. And she was worried we too had experienced the strong odor.

I checked very carefully and there were no unusual odors anywhere, inside or out nor had we noticed any during our stay. But my mother recalled a fairly strong odor when she was out on the deck in front of the house the day after we arrived. She thought it was some clam shells and perhaps some other items brought up from the beach. There was one clam shell remaining but she recalled others that were no longer there. But we never smelled anything inside nor when we went in and out the front door.

We assume, although we can't be sure, that was the cause of the odor the week prior to our stay. The shells were down low and just outside where the odor had been noticed inside the house. And it's likely if there were clams in the shells that the raccoons carried them off at some point and ate them.

I know I'm digressing but two things come to mind:

1. If you bring things up from the beach that either smell or will in the future please don't leave them for others to deal with.

2. If you have a problem during your stay, please contact Ingrid right away and see if she can take care of it. You'll be doing not just yourself a favor but Ingrid and future renters as well.

It has been a pleasure interacting with Ingrid via email prior to and after our two stays and having seen that she immediately took action when learning of a problem I have even more confidence in recommending the Seal Rock Hideaway.

Owner's Response: Thank you, Pieter, for your thoughtful suggestions, and for your positive reports of the house and of our management. I'm happy for you that the temporary odor issue was resolved early in your stay. It's very rare we have any such problems, and when they occur, we always act immediately. It was great to have you back with us again this year!

We have the best of both worlds -- close enough to Newport (12 miles) to go to dinner or take in the galleries, shops, music festivals, aquarium, brew pubs, and other attractions -- yet our beach has the rare combination of rocks (for good fishing and picturesque sunsets), tide pools, and wide open stretches for walking. You won't find this kind of beach in Newport or Waldport, only in between, which is where we are. And seeing other people on 'our' beach is unusual! The village of Seal Rock (our postal address) is one mile up the road, with several antique and gift shops and a convenience store. Four miles south is Waldport, with a great supermarket, fish market, post office, video rental, more antique shops, and a great dock where you can go crabbing or rent a small boat to toss crab rings into the bay. They'll even cook your crabs for you! Take a hike into old growth wilderness just a few miles away, with good maps from the U.S. Forest Service.

Other Activities: whale watch cruises, wine tours, historic lighthouses, aquarium, old growth trails, hiking, crabbing, mussel gathering, mushrooming (in season)
