Photos and Description of the Tillac vacation barn rental
6 bedrooms all with en-suite bath- or shower-rooms in 2 comfortable Gites

Maison Tillac (3 star) is a well renovated 19th century farmworkers cottage and barn in the medieval village of Tillac in Gascony in South West France. It has its own swimming pool. Situated one minute's walk from the local epicerie, two from the best butcher in the area, three from the village bar and restaurant and four minutes drive from an 18-hole golf course, Maison Tillac is ideal for a relaxing holiday in the beautiful Gascon countryside. Tillac is wonderfully placed for many attractions. Sightseeing, walking, cycling, golf, tennis, horse riding, fishing are all available in the area. Marciac, with its International Jazz Festival, Mirande for Country Music and Vic Fezensac for Salsa are all very close by. Tillac has its Floralie, Brocante, Fete and classical music concerts. Add the rolling countryside of Gascony and its fields of smiling sunflowers, tiny villages, produce markets, quiet roads and lots of sunshine and you have the magic ingredients for the best of holiday.

Events: There are three major music events in the area. In July there are two music festivals, in Mirande celebrating Country Music and in Vic Fezensac for Latin-American music fans. In August comes the internationally famous Marciac Jazz Festival, two unmissable weeks for the jazz aficionado.

Tillac has its flower market in early April, its antiques fair (Brocante/Vide Grenier) in May , classical music concerts/workshops in August and the village fete in July as well as dinner dances throughout the year. Neighbouring villages have their own fetes and other special events from Spring through to Autumn.

Sightseeing: Tillac's unique medieval street; Barran with its twisted church spire; L'Isle-de-Noé in the arms of a river surrounding its 18th century chateau (currently being renovated); Bassoues' 43m high donjon (tower) museum describing the histories of nearby villages; Montreal's gallo-roman villa; Fources one of the prettiest of small villages; Éauze the heart of Armagnac country with an archaeological museum; Riscle's Gascon museum; Auch, the capital of The Gers, with a beautiful cathedral (the choir stalls and stained glass are superb) and its statue of D'artagnan; Condom's gothic cloisters and Armagnac museum and cellars; Mirande's unique church and Beaux Arts museum; Lectoure's thermal centers for 'taking the cure'; Fleurence's fine market square and church with superb stained glass. Also Lavardens, Saint-Puy, Valence-sur-Baise, L'Abbey de Flaran, Cassaigne, Larressingle, La Romieu, Saint-Clar and many more.

Food and Drink: In Gascony country food and cooking still reign supreme. There are many restaurants nearby, including Tillac, serving wholesome food and plenty of it. Four courses, including wine, for 10-12€ is the norm! Gascon meals revolve around, but are not limited to, four things – duck, garlic, wine and armagnac. There are also gourmet restaurants for you to try, vineyards to visit and wines and spirits to sample and buy. Don't miss the fiery spirit of Armagnac, Pousse Rapier and Floc de Gascogne. Everywhere you will see ducks and geese, for this is foie gras country. Foie gras is the pride of Gascony and a delight for the senses. This is best sampled with a glass of sweet Pacherenc or Jurançon wine. There are produce markets at Mirande, Marciac and Mielan. The best butcher in the area is in Tillac and the local shop provides wonderful croissants and bread plus all your basic provisions and fuel for your barbecue. Tillac also has its own restaurant and post office.

Notes:
All first floor bedrooms have parquet flooring, original vaulted ceilings, a clothes recess, chair, bedside tables and lights. All en-suites are well lit and have a bath or walk-in shower, toilet, washbasin, mirror, electric point, etc. We have a downstairs bedroom, which is ideal for those who prefer not to climb stairs. There is a separate front entrance to this room so it can be let out on its own or, out of season, with the living area as a ground floor apartment for two people. Because of the presence of exposed beams we respectfully request guests not to smoke in the building. We have a dog of our own and as we live adjacent to Maison Tillac, it is not possible for us to accept guests with their own pets. To meet French Government requirements we have fitted a pool alarm. However, it is ultimately the responsibility of the guests to supervise the safe use of the pool.

Maison Tillac in Tillac, Gascony

  • Submitted: Mar 6, 2012

I don't usually write reviews about places I have visited but this one is so exceptional. It has become a favourite with our family having stayed there three times already.

The gite is beautifully done, very clean and comfortable. We also loved the fact that each bedroom had it's own en-suite bathroom. The grounds, garden and pool area are very pretty. There was an outdoor table and chairs overlooking the garden and pool and lots of comfortable lounge chairs and umbrellas. We were quite happy to spend hours by the pool. It was also a great place to come back to after a day of touring and browsing around quaint villages.

The little village of Tillac is an absolute gem. One Sunday we went to a concert in the village church and were treated to free drinks and snacks afterwards laid out by the locals on tables in the street. The food in the area is great and very reasonable by British standards.

The owners provided everything we needed and were available and friendly whenever we had a query.

Great place for a relaxed holiday. Would definitely recommend it.

A Superb Gite in Beautiful Surroundings

Such a pretty gite, surrounded by amazing unspoiled countryside in the centre of one of the prettiest medieval villages in France. Madeleine and Tony were very welcoming and helpful, and very knowledgeable on the local area.

The rooms are spacious, beautifully furnished and very comfortable. The kitchen area is fully equipped and the setting outside the gite around the pool is lovely for outdoor barbecuing in summertime.

Gascony has lots of quaint villages and the famous jazz festival takes place in Marciac at the end of August, and is really worth a visit!

The swimming pool is amazing and very clean, and the gardens surrounding it are beautifully landscaped in a tranquil rural setting.

We would really recommend it to anyone looking for an up-market holiday in superb surroundings.

Nothing left to be desired

We stayed in La Grange in July, 2011 and enjoyed our time there very much. Tony and Madeleine are very considerate, welcoming hosts, always willing to help and to introduce visitors to the region. Having lived there for many years, they have a profound knowledge of culture, cuisine, politics and whatever else one might be interested in.
The gites lies in some distance to their house, with its own gate, so we also privacy and our own space. We found the gites to be clean and very comfortable, there was nothing we missed. We tremendously enjoyed swimming in the pool on hot days, we also (most untypically) had two rainy days that we spent snuggled up on the sittee, reading and watching DVDs.
Lourdes and the Pyrenees, even Toulouse, the "ville rose" are within easy reach, you must go and see them. We liked very much the country markets, jumble sales ("attic clearances") and fetes in the villages. The area with its rolling hills is wonderful for relaxed walking, maybe cycling. We'd recommend the place not only for 55+ but also for people in their 30ies or 40ies who are looking for a laid-back, quiet holiday and want to be close to nature, experience the golden light in the evening, sunbathe, swim, enjoy good food, explore an ancient rural area.
It is really necessary to have a car at one's disposal.

Winter Long Let

  • 5 of 5
  • Submitted: Nov 29, 2008
  • Stayed: Jan 2008
My wife and I spent 5 weeks at la Grange from late January to early March 2008.

The gite was in good order and immaculately clean on our arrival, with a welcoming initial supply of logs and kindling in the timber store. Despite some frosty days and nights the electric space heaters and wood-burning stove, plus an ample supply of hot water, ensured our comfort. In summary it is a tasteful and attractive conversion from the original farming usage.

The property is accurately described by the owners as regards location, layout and amenities. The local village shop where basics can be obtained has been augmented by the recent opening of a supermarket, complete with road fuel and car wash facilities, some ten minutes away on the approach to Marciac.

La Grange provides comfortable and user-friendly accommodation in an ideal location for those needing a longer stay. It has a double bedroom and en-suite shower room on the ground floor which we found to be very convenient.

The main Auch to Tarbes road is only five minutes away, and the main road leading past Plaisance to Aire sur l’Adour and Mont-de-Marsan goes past La Grange. The foothills of the Pyrenees are little more than an hour away. Toulouse (Blagnac) airport is realistically two hours away, and has a steadily increasing choice of European services, with Pau offering a smaller range of direct flights and useful feeder services via Paris, Amsterdam and London (Stansted). Pau, being smaller in all respects, is handy for less mobile and elderly travellers. The nearest TGV station is at Tarbes, 40 minutes away.

Good walks are available from the door and car parking is both ample and private. Even in February we were able to take advantage of the provision of outdoor tables and chairs at the rear of the building, as well as shelter for drying washing. One niggling feature of the location is that obtaining good signal strength with mobile telephones is well-nigh impossible. However land line telephones are installed in both parts of Maison Tillac.

The proprietors of Maison Tillac live on site, are always willing to answer questions about the area, and help should visitors have any problems. Being keen gardeners they take pride in keeping the property attractive and colourful.

We hope that you enjoy your stay as much as we enjoyed ours.

Summer holiday in Maison Tillac - Gascony

  • 5 of 5
  • Submitted: Oct 21, 2008

One is always apprehensive upon arriving at a holiday rental which has not been recommended, but approaching The Grange was a welcomed delight to all in our party. The property is situated on rather grand and beautiful grounds - visually impressive both inside and out.
The Grange is both traditional - with all of the expected features (open beams, etc) - but also modern and up-dated to the highest standard (an en-suite in all bathrooms - with an unlimited supply of hot water).
The pool, situated behind The Grange - well maintained by Tony (who had to repeatedly enjure the endless questioning of our 8 year old daughter), is well missed by all of us. It's the perfect size for the kids and the adults to swim off the extra calories acquired while tasting the local food.

Madeleine and Tony - the hosts - were extremely helpful, yet not intrusive. The perfect combination!
Want to know about the local booze, the best places to eat, places of interest, films on show, anything .....ask Madeleine or Tony.....a wealth of knowledge.

The town itself is quainte and pleasant......with Tilliac only a short drive away form the Jazz Festivals...the purpose of our visit.

In summary, The Grange, its hosts, the area, culture, food, wine, music, the list go's on....come fully recommended by all in our summer holiday party of 2008.
