Kehena House Rental Photos and Description

House, 1 Bedroom + Convertible bed(s), 1 Bath + Outdoor Shower (Sleeps 4-6)

You might be making reservations for Kehena Treetop Bungalow for only 3 days, but you’ll wish you had made them for much longer!

The House: Relax in Comfort!

Kehena Treetop Bungalow is a tropical paradise, nestled in among lush green foliage and fruit trees. This home has been completely remodeled from top to bottom, and is new inside and out. You’re going to enjoy the beautifully refinished hardwood floors and the fresh new décor. This house is the perfect getaway from the hustle and bustle of the traditional vacation areas, so forget about having to fight traffic and congestion with other visitors. When you’re not out enjoying the beauty and experiences of the Big Island, you’ll enjoy staying “home” and lounging on the lanai in the hammock, or just sitting at the table reading a good book. You’ll spend your vacation knowing you are in a special place in the world.

Perfect for a couple or family, the one bedroom in the bungalow is HUGE and easily accommodates the two queen beds, wardrobe, desk, and walk-in closet, with lots of room to spare! And the futons in the living room can provide additional sleeping space for children, if needed. Free Wifi and basic cable, along with a selection of books and DVDs (for both adults and children) are available for your entertainment. Best of all, KIDS STAY FREE!!

A full kitchen is well equipped with all your cooking and dining needs, including a blender, microwave, and rice cooker. With a 4-person dining table, additional pub-style table in the kitchen, and breakfast bar, there is ample space for dining in comfort. And while this house, like most of the island, is on a water-catchment system, the home features a top-of-the-line water filtration and UV purification system, so you can safely drink from the tap, wash your fruit and veggies, or brush your teeth without concern.

In addition to the inside bathroom with shower, an additional screened outside shower (complete with hot water) allows you to easily rinse off the sand from the beach while enjoying the sounds of nature. You’ve got it all in Paradise!

Finally, for those with young children, the house is provisioned with a pack n play, infant bathtub, infant play activity mat, high chair, and a TON of toys and books. Make travel with children easy!

Local Attractions:

Kehena Treehouse Bungalow is located on the famous “Red Road”, which is one of the most beautiful and historic drives in the state of Hawaii. Along this road you can see lava flows, lush tropical fruit trees and orchids, incredible blue ocean vistas, spinner dolphins, green turtles, and in season, whales!

Eating/Shopping/Markets: Historic Kalapana Village, overtaken by the 1990 lava flow, is just a 5 minute drive west from the Bungalow. Kalapana village currently hosts a Kava bar and restaurant (with tasty fresh fish and fruit dishes!) that are open daily, a small farmer/artist market once per week, and a great little hiking trail out to a newly forming black sand beach (no swimming here). Pahoa Village with restaurants (Italian, Mexican, Thai, American), grocery shopping, and farmer’s markets is about a 15 minute drive. Hilo, about a 40 minute drive, also has everything you might need to buy at basic stores such as Safeway, Target, and Walmart, as well as an AMAZING farmers/artist market held several times a week.

Swimming/Snorkeling/Surf: The house is a block from the Big Blue Pacific Ocean, and a 5 minute walk to the Kehena Black Sand Beach (clothing optional) where you can sometimes swim with dolphins! For those interested in surfing or boogie boarding, a 10 minute drive gets you to nearby Mackenzie State Park and Isaac Hale Beach Park, which are great spots to watch the locals (and green turtles!) ride the waves. Also in this area is Ahalanui Warm Spring Park, where 90 degree geothermally heated waters at the ocean edge are available for year-round relaxation. The warm spring is semi-developed, and connected to the ocean through a rock-wall channel for daily water turnover to keep it clean. It’s wonderful anytime, but especially on cooler days, or for children that want warmer water or a more “pool-like” ocean experience. Finally, a 15 minute drive will get you to the wonderful Kapoho Tide pools, where swimming and snorkeling are incredible, and you might even see a green turtle! If you wish to explore further or have to run to “the city”, Hilo has some nice swimming/snorkeling beaches as well. The very adventurous can cruise up out for a day trip to famous Waipi’o Valley in about 1.5 hrs, past Volcano NP to Punalu’u Black Sand Beach or South Point in 1.5-2hrs, or over to the west side Kohala beaches in about 2-2.5 hours.

Various beach “toys” such as boogie boards, swim noodles, rudimentary snorkeling gear, beach mats, etc., are provided at the house for guests to use.

Hiking/Walking/Lava viewing: For a quick and easy early-morning jaunt, there is a “local access” cliff/iron wood forest walk 5 minutes from the house, or just stroll around the neighborhood admiring the lush vegetation, flowers, and low-hanging fruit! About a 15 minute drive is Lava Tree State Park, where you can see some amazing volcanic creations along a beautiful short walk that is great for all ages. Kalapana Village has a lovely walk across the lava to a newly forming black sand beach, which is just perfect after one of their amazing breakfasts or dinners. Hawaii volcanoes national park is a 40-45 minute drive, and that area hosts an amazing array of trails inside and outside the park (and don’t miss wine-tasting at the winery!). Closer by, the state of Hawaii manages a lava viewing area (lava activity dependent on the whims of the Goddess Pele!) about a 10 minute drive from the house. In addition, a boat charter can be booked that leaves from nearby Isaac Hale to watch lava flowing into the ocean (volcano-activity dependent)! If you wish to range further from home, the Hilo area also has some nice waterfalls and lava tubes to explore.

Pana’ewa Rainforest Zoo and Gardens: Those with (or without!) children may like to visit the Hawaii Zoo, which is open daily and located between Hilo and Kea ’au…perhaps 25-30 minutes from the Kehena house. This little gem is free to the public, quite tastefully done with beautifully landscaped walks, and well cared for wildlife in ample-sized enclosures. You can even watch them feed the tiger at designated times, or arrive during petting-zoo hours! It also hosts an enormous sun-shielded playground.

Fishing: in Hawaii you don’t need a license for recreational fishing, even if you are from out of state! A fishing pole is provided at the house, and the nearby beach cliffs and ocean access make fishing access easy! Try your luck to catch a fresh dinner!

Jungle Treetop Hideaway!!

  • 5 of 5

My partner and I were able to totally unwind and unplug from the world in this jungle love nest! We loved how the lush tropical trees cocooned us in an array of green (from the leaves) and gold (from the sun). It had all the amenities needed when we wanted to hole ourselves in for some much needed relaxation and was close to incredible hiking, snorkeling, and other fun activities when we were seeking adventure. The neighbors in the area were all full of aloha and offered us free fresh fruit! YUMMY!! The first night was a bit hard to sleep as the Coqui frogs and other jungle critters were pretty active but we quickly got used to them and now we're back home we miss their nightly serenade dearly! Just a 5 minute stroll to the infamous Kehena Black Beach (just make sure you have good shoes with you as flip flops can make it very dangerous to get down into).

"Real" Hawaiian vacation

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I stayed here for a week and the stay was nothing shy of amazing!! The house is in a jungle type setting. Its so much better to stay in a home thats in an actual neighborhood than in a resort. It gives you the real feel of what it's like to live in Hawaii. Mother nature comes alive at night as the frogs sing you to sleep and you can wake up to the most beautiful sunrises you will ever see!! It's a little far from town but completely worth it! Friendly neighbors too!

4.5 stars

  • 4 of 5

Just spent 28 days in the Bungalow and had a fantastic time. Everything on the island is no more than 2.5 hours away. Kehena Beach is beautiful. There is a cliff walk trail at the south eastern corner of the neighborhood leading to 2 sea arches (walk 0.5 mile south). Breadfruit was growing in the tree by the hammock. We quartered, steamed, then added salt, pepper, & butter. Insects were bad in the house in the evenings, usually vacuumed them up near the lights once nightly. Only 5 or 6 channels on the TV, and internet is on the slow side.

Loved it!

  • 5 of 5

We had a fantastic time staying here. The owners put together the best information about what to do in the area. I can't stress enough that you should look at it. There are so many things nearby. We ended up carrying the printed sheet around because it was better than a guide book. We loved the Puna area, so lush. The area was very walkable too. We cooked on most of the time we spent here, at least dinner. Loved our time grilling on the lanai. Had a lovely stay here.

Excellent stay in the bungalow

  • 5 of 5

The treetop bungalow was a great and fun place to vacation on the beautiful island of Hawaii. The house was just the right size and offered all the comforts of home to include a full size washer and dryer and BBQ grill. I spent many a hour laying in the hammock on the awesome porch just listening to the surf crashing and the wildlife. The location was amazing offering a central location to the black sand beach and the small and funky town of Pehoa. The town of Pehoa is a friendly and inviting place that offers restaurants with good value, small grocery stores and is fairly close to Hilo. I would stay here again in a heartbeat.

Remember that this part of the island does not offer a lot in way of long beach heads so if you are looking for this it may not be a good fit. If you like old Hawaii with charm, beauty, and a true opportunity to relax than this is your spot.
