Thanksgiving 2013

We booked the property to spend Thanksgiving with our family who live in the nearby areas. We loved being all together in the house spending time with each other. The property is beautiful and we took family pictures using the old barns and surrounding areas as backdrops. I wish I had know that there had been pets in the property as my son has allergies. I think it is also helpful to know that the internet connection is not strong enough to steam or download anything, Zann did tells us that when she was showing us around the house. Zann was very helpful during our stay. The directions were great and we drove right to the property. It is a great rural setting if you are looking for a rustic get away.

Perfect for us!

We spent nearly three weeks at this property with 2 of our sons and my mom. Everyday was filled with adventure and fun, whether we traveled to see the sights or stayed on the farm and enjoyed the peace and beauty it offers. We had been there once before and knew then that six days was not long enough to enjoy all the farm and the area have to offer.

We spent July 4th at Monticello in Charlottesville, at the naturalization ceremony...which I highly recommend. We had a very long but fun-filled day in DC and made a few short road trips around to see various Civil War battlefields, which are of particular interest to our family as we have several ancestors who fought. We all enjoyed the pool and watching the cows. There was even the addition of a new calf while we were there. The view after reaching the top of the mountain is breathtaking and well worth the walk!

Zann is a gracious host, incredibly knowledgeable about local battles and the area in general, and a whiz with genealogy! She even spent time teaching my son how to clean and gut a fish which endeared her to him for life :)

We will most definitely return AGAIN...there's so much more to see and do!

After flying into Washington from England for our once in a lifetime family holiday we drove to the farmhouse( great directions).....Blown away by the location with the Blue Ridge Mountains and the lovely rural setting. We have both visited the US several times but this topped the biscuit. It was gorgeous!
Zan was lovely..she made this a home from home for us. The accommodation was spacious and superbly maintained and she was so welcoming to us as a family.
As we only booked at the last minute we could only stay for 3 nights and then moved on but we pooped back and saw Zan twice during our stay. If we ever are able we would love to go back.
I can only say that I recommend this property to anyone in the strongest possible terms and deft anyone to be disappointed.
Thanks Zahn - the house and you made our holiday. - James & Caroline plus the littlies!

Very Nice Place to Stay

I have nothing but positive things to say about both the house and the owner. The house is a bit difficult to find, but I think that's kind of the point when you're renting a place like this. Luckily, Zann provided extremely helpful directions. She is located in the house next door and was very gracious in showing us around the house and grounds, but was sure to let us know that we wouldn't be a bother. I'd highly recommend to anyone looking for a place to stay in the area.

JOKE But Not For Me

We rented this based on the pictures and for sure they were taken when this house was new, today it is very old and runned down, if you look at the pictures she took from the top of the hill they even block out some of the house your getting by a big tree and focus on the house in the bottom right more, we rented this wanting to be close to DC and this was my fault for not checking closer but the drive there would have been very long. We did not stay here at all, like to never found it, when we did you have to drive up a field to get there, would say it would been really hard to do at night, and if it rained you would have buried up in mud trying to get there. This was our only vacation with our whole family, I rented this to save over having to rent 3 hotel rooms seeing we had 3 couples, boy was I sick to which I my wife called Zann begging for a least some of our money back, to which she said I'm old I need this money. My bank was going to try to stop payment on our check but we felt that could cause some legal isssues that would made us return there for a hearing something time would have not allowed for sure. I just think this property needs to be taken off Home Away or least make her relist using the pictures that I have of her house today. I do not see anywhere to post pictures but I can be reached on Home Away if need be. The side french doors in the pictures are boarded up, the front cutters are gone, the deck is so worn out now, the house paint is so bad, we went in to try to call her and have her come out we called at 3:30 and waited for about a hour then left, Zann called that night at 7pm, just so heart broken to plan all year for a trip and then be fooled by this lady who knows in her heart this is not the way the house is today. Please don't do what I did and find another house, if anyone that has posted on this house the comments I seen would contact me so if they are real we can help others to not have lost all the money saved for a week of vacation. Zann PLEASE Do the right thing and take your house off Home Away Please!! John McKinney
Owner's Response: Indeed, it is unfortunate that the registrants chose to renege on their reservations at the last minute but the only cause given was that it was not close enough to DC. They stated that they had an 80 year old friend or relative who planned to visit and they did not think he could make the trip. They voiced that the web site implied a closer proximity to DC. It was suggested that the map and location indentified on the listing could have been an indicator, but that when asked, the exact distance and travel time is always provided.

This is simply a question of those responsible for a decision wishing to make someone else pay. Sad for those of us who take pride in honesty and transparency.

On the day of arrival the registrants called and left a message that they were lost. I returned the call and learned that “They had driven around for hours” (did not bring the directions with them) and decided it was too far from DC and they would find another place closer to DC. They asked about a refund and were informed of the refund policy that is predicated on the owner’s ability to rebook the property. The wife confirmed that she understood and that it was HomeAway’s fault for implying the property was closer to DC and her husband’s fault for not being more thorough. In their original inquiry, they asked how close the train station to DC was to the farm and I responded quickly and accurately.

As to the derogatory statements made about myself and the property, they are false.

My age and need for funds was never a topic of discussion.
There are no damaged or missing gutters.
The lower half of the French Doors which open inwardly are covered with lattice per county code.
The railing and decking has been left to a weathered color to blend with the natural environment and has never been painted.
The regular power washing has been delayed due to unusual spring weather.
There is a maintained gravel road to the cottage and parking area marked with two directional signs and driving through the field is not permitted.

There was no mention of the lovely interior, the freshly painted roof or the landscaped and mulched grounds. It is an unfortunate case of registered guests altering their plans to stay due to their own arbitrary decision that it would be inconvenient and trying to justify getting a refund based on rapidly changing and false statements. Proud owner of a wonderful cotttage
