Rockland is an exciting city full of restaurants, pubs, wine bars, art galleries, renowned museums, and shops of all descriptions, at the same time retaining its historical ambiance. A concert hall and a restored 1920's movie theater complete the downtown. The grand natural harbor, with its exceptional breakwater and lighthouse, is dotted with pleasure yachts and sailboats and the largest windjammer fleet in the world. Yet Rockland still has a working harbor with a commerical fishing and lobster boat fleet. A State Ferry operates daily to the off-shore islands. Rockland is called “The Lobster Capital Of the World”, and 'The Gateway to Penobscot Bay.' There’s no place like Penobscot Bay for walking and exploring, fishing, sailing, kayaking, hiking and rock climbing. And in the evenings in Rockland, rejoin society, and eat out, go to a concert or a film. Rockland has something to offer everybody, young and old. Come and stay at the Zadoc F Brewster House and see for yourself!

Simply delightful!!!

Upon reading the previous reviews, I wasn't sure what to add. They all aptly describe our experience this past week. Beautiful surroundings, wonderful part of Maine with lots to do, lovely decorating, historic touches throughout, and very clean.
When not out and about, I found myself daydreaming of living in the apartment year round as it was ideal in size, layout and charm. Cathy and George are a wealth of knowledge and have put so much of themselves into this home. I can envision many returns. Simply delightful!

It's all true

Jayan UK
Review Submitted: June 17, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2009
The reviews about this house, its situation, condition, facilities, charm (and most importantly the unanimous opinions of previous visitors) turn out to be perfectly true. No point in talking further about comfy furnishings, genuine paintings and drawings on the wall, plentiful supplies of 'things' in well appointed kitchen and bathroom, oh, and antiques everywhere. All that has been said.

Is it as wonderful as it all sounds? Well it's more than that...because
somehow all the good things of life have been brought together in such a way that it all feels so, well, so 'right'. Something to do with being at ease with the place and the world - a rare feeling that the owners have somehow magically created.

Now there are plenty of things to enjoy in the surrounding area - again
well described by other visitors. But for an overview it seems to this writer that nearby towns and harbours, indeed, the surrounding countryside, are also at ease with the situation in which they find themselves...a kind of contentment that quickly attaches itself to the visitor.

And when you have enjoyed a picnic at one of the deserted beaches on a nearby island - had your fill of gazing across a limitless ocean or sailed in a schooner from Camden - the warmth and generosity of the house is always waiting.

Finally, if visiting or travelling out and about is not quite 'it' - then the perfect place to write, read or gaze out of the window at a sailing boat crossing the bay is undoubtedly Zadoc Brewster House. Most highly recommended.

A wonderful place to stay

Review Submitted: May 4, 2009 Date of Stay: April 2009
My family first stayed in the downstairs apartment in 2008 and enjoyed it so much we visited again in 2009. This is a truly wonderful house which is well appointed, clean and well maintained throughout. You can feel the history as soon as you walk through the door, friendly, tasteful, relaxing. It is possible to walk into Rockland to either shop or to eat or to just spend time on the harbour front. Further afield there are secluded coastlines to explore, walks through blueberry fields, drives past picturesque lakes surrounded by pine trees, golf courses and even skiing in the winter. My children particularly liked being shown how to tap Maple trees for the syrup. We definately see this place as a home from home and would recommend it to anyone. I particularly love the view from the kitchen through the trees towards the rich blue of the ocean as the early morning sun bathes the house in golden light.

A great holiday!

MichelleD Melbourne, Australia
Review Submitted: January 19, 2009 Date of Stay: June 2008
Our family have stayed twice at Bayview Square - once in the upstairs and once in the downstairs apartment. Both are absolutely wonderful and upstairs has a great view of the bay! The apartments are beautifully decorated and comfortably furnished with antique (I think mainly) English furniture and have numerous really special touches. For example, we were amazed to see that all the plates in the downstairs apartment are antique Wedgwood!! However the owners are not precious (unlike the china), and were happy for it all to go into the dishwasher!!! Firewood is provided, and when we stayed in the spring, we had a blazing fire some nights. Wireless internet and a computer are available, which is particularly
useful for planning trips around the surrounding area. The house even has a functional gym!! for use by both apartments. Finally the owners are very friendly, and were happy to provide suggestions for local sightseeing, restaurants etc.

Bayview square is an easy stroll from the town centre. Rockland itself is a really fun place, with lots of restaurants (check out the sushi bar), cafes and antique shops. Fishing trips and boat trips are easy to arrange. The Farnsworth art museum is also worth an afternoon. We spent a long time wandering round Rockland, although other fun little towns like Camden are a short drive away. All in all both times we stayed we had a great holiday and Bayview Square genuinely lives up to its description on the website. We will be back!
