The LUDLOW AND OKEMO VALLEY area has two distinctly different identities. During summer and fall it is very much identified with the string of lakes just north of the village, and as a marketplace for those residing in, or visiting, smaller neighboring communities. In winter, it is thought of as the home of Okemo/Jackson-Gore Ski Resort.

Ludlow: The Ludlow Area [Okemo Valley] is precisely what today’s visitor to Vermont is looking for - a true four-season resort area! In winter, the centerpiece of the Okemo Valley is the Okemo Mountain Resort, and it's newly opened Jackson Gore Base Area. And, although Okemo’s slopes are the main attraction during the winter months, the area is also popular for snowmobiling, cross-country skiing, and horsedrawn sleigh rides. In short, there's not much one could want and not find here.

Regardless of the season, you'll not be in want for places to eat. The area offers everything from candlelight dining to steak and seafood houses, Chinese or Thai food, a Subway shop and great pizza. Likewise, choices of accommodations are virtually endless and range from full-service hotels and country inns to motels, B&B’s and campgrounds. During the warmer months the five lakes immediately north of town along Route 100 become the center of attention. Here you can swim, sail, canoe, water-ski, fish…or BBQ dinner lakeside in Camp Plymouth State Park. You can rent a canoe for a day, or a lakeside home. Rent a mountain bike and explore the countryside. Or play 18 holes on the 6400 yard, Par 70 Okemo Valley Golf Course without ever leaving Ludlow. Picnic, shop, visit the nearby Calvin Coolidge Homestead, or enjoy an outdoor concert. It is all here in Ludlow, or within a few short minutes! From

About Ned Newland

Owners Jean and Ned purchased the home as a retirement investment, and for family gatherings with our three adult children/spouses, and 12 grand kids. We were attracted to it's privacy and proximity to the lake. You can walk out of the great room, onto a large deck, and be almost level with the water. We live in FL winters, and in NJ summers. Retired from medical marketing and advertising business.

Ned Newland purchased this house in 2004

Why Ned Newland chose Ludlow

Location. Location. Location. Five minutes to Okemo Ski and Summer Resort area (Jackson-Gore); 20 minutes to Killington Ski/Summer resort. Seven minutes to Ludlow, with its many attractions (check website). Private cove with 150 feet of lake front, and the privacy of four bedrooms vs lofts.

What makes this house unique

New appliances; freshly painted inside and out; swimming, fishing and boating in summer; foliage in fall; skiing in winter. Beautiful, unobstructed views of lake and mountains.

Great Ski Weekend

  • 5 of 5

I stayed with 6 of my friends over President's Day Weekend. The living area and kitchen space was just what we were looking for. Great place to relax, cook, eat and hangout for the night. Location was perfect for getting to Okemo to get on the slopes early. House was very clean and maintained. Owner was very responsive and helpful. I would definitely recommend this place. Look forward to staying again sometime.

Owner's Response: We have not met Maureen or her friends, as is often the case. Still, we had excellent vibes from her as we negotiated for them to be our guests. What a thrill to receive such a positive review. Makes it all worth while that we treat our Ski Haus/Lake House as our home away from home, which it is. Owners Jean and Ned

great rental - close to okemo

  • 4 of 5

I enjoyed this rental with 8 of my friends. We had a great time! The living area is perfect for a larger group with two couches and a bunch of chairs and spaces to sit. Our favorite part was the table that sat 9 so we were all able to enjoy dinners together during our stay. Each room was very comfortable and we did not have any issues with the property itself.

My only complaint would be the driveway. The owners gave us plenty of information about the property once it was booked and it was all very helpful. However, the one thing that we did not know until we got there was that the driveway is on an incline. Add snow and ice to the equation and it can make for a slightly frustrating equation. We had one four wheel drive vehicle but the rest were front wheel drive (we all currently live in Philadelphia where there is not as much snow or need for four wheel drive) and we spent about 30-40 minutes each morning getting the cars out of the driveway. We ended up finding a way to park them at the top of the driveway but it definitely took us quite a bit longer to get out of the house each day than it would have had we had four wheel drive cars or if the driveway had not been so steep. However, we still loved the house and really enjoyed ourselves so it only brought the rating down from 5 to 4 stars. I would just say that the owners should provide a bit of warning in advance so that renters know to prepare for it.

All that being said - it is VERY close to Okemo and incredibly well located to a bunch of other attractions/amenities around the area. I can't complain about waking up to a beautiful winter lake view either!

Owner's Response: We sincerely regret the inconvenience they experienced by these nice guests. We are disappointed by the "4", since we work hard for 5's. We appreciate all the nice things said, but as I said when we heard about the problem, "after" the stay, it's the "first" driveway complaint in the ten years we've owned the place. We have a front wheel drive SUV, and our daughter, with 5 kids, has a front wheel Chrysler minivan. We've not had the problem. Still, being in the VT mountains, it's always better to have a 4-wheel vehicle. IF we had been advised of the issue we would have suggested: 1) use of our neighbor's flat driveway; 2) spreading salt on the driveway the night before; 3) park on the top of the driveway. as they eventually figured out, and 4) get our snow removal contractor back there. We do not hide the slope. We're in the VT. There's a picture of it, with cars, on the pictures I include in the cover letter acknowledging availability. It isn't in the pix on the core site because of limited space. The weekend these guests were there was extremely cold, so that may have contributed to the ice situation. Ned and Jean Newland, Owners

Beautiful Lakeside Retreat

  • 5 of 5

What a great location and perfect spot to reconnect with family. House was very clean & well maintained. We had three generations enjoying the lake: swimming, kayaking, canoeing & and the wonderful hiking trails nearby . Close to town with restaurants but secluded. Ned was very easy to work with and so informative. Can't wait to come back!

The Quintessential New England Getaway

  • 5 of 5

"We've now been to the lakeside home probably a half a dozen times over the years with our very good friends. The memories our kids have created during our stays here are priceless and something they frequently talk about.

Each season we've been here there is something to offer. The access to Okemo and Killington during ski season is ideal. Jackson-Gore base at Okemo is 5 minutes away! ... and the snow this year rivaled what remember out west even in mid March.

We also love to come here during the summer. The activities that the whole family can participate in are right outside the door. We can sit out in the sun on the deck and watch the kids swimming in Lake Rescue or take a boat/kayak out on the lake. The kids love to go to the island where they can swing from the rope and drop into the lake. The home also has great access to any number of hikes, state parks,or beautiful vistas. We all tend to let go of our habit of needing media constantly at our fingers when we're at the home. For several days we feel we can reconnect with what is really important in family.

The listing and pictures of the home capture the feel of the lake very well. As always, the house is very clean and inviting and we seem to make ourselves at home almost immediately. When we meet our friends up here at the lake our 2 families are easily accommodated in the house. Space never seems to be an issue even with our ski gear and kids who are now young adults. I would and do recommend this home on Lake Rescue to anyone coming up to Vermont. We love what Ned and Jean have created here and hope to continue for years to come."

Our favorite place any season!

  • 5 of 5

Crazy amount of snow for March! We love looking out at the frozen lake, having a roaring fire in the fireplace and being only 5 minutes from the slopes. We have not been here since Labor Day (yes we love this cottage in the summer as well). The new sofa and kitchen appliances look great! Thanks for keeping this getaway so immaculate. We look forward to our next visit!

Our year around property, in the winter, is a SKI HAUS, 5 minutes from OKEMO and 20 minutes from KILLINGTON ski resorts. In the spring/summer/fall, it's a wonderful LAKE HOUSE (cottage/camp) on beautiful Lake Rescue, at water's edge (no stairs to walk down from main living area and beautiful, large, deck). Catch the beautiful sunrise over the lake in all seasons.

Other Activities: Famous New England Fall Foliage

Golf: Golf at the beautiful semi-private Okemo Valley Golf Club, 2 miles away.

Ski: Skiing in Vermont...this lovely cottage is located closest to the Jackson-Gore/Okemo Ski Resort ( 2 mi) and within 20 minutes of Killington, Bromley and other great ski locations! Located off Rte 100, access to a plowed, sanded road is easy and early! The cozy great room with field stone fireplace is a great spot to warm up with a good book and an apres ski toddy. Kids and adults can play the many games located at the cottage or go ice skating, ice fishing or play hockey out the back door. Enjoy the ambiance of this winter escape while looking at gorgeous views of frozen Lake Rescue.

This ski haus is located on a paved road with early and easy access to skiing. Firewood is plentiful and the great room conducive to warming by the fire, relaxing and enjoying friends & family! Or, have s'mores at the lakeside fire pit.
