Why The Owner chose Citta della Pieve
The Tower is all that remains of the ancient Paciano Castle, one of the most important castles in the territory to the south-west of Lake Trasimeno positioned along the ancient road that winds through Panicale on its way from Perugia to Chiusi. The earliest information available dates back to 917 when Emperor Berengario I (850 – 924), Marquis of Friuli and King of Italy, granted a fiefdom to Uguccione II, Marquis of Tuscany. Mention was made of a New Paciano back in 1312. The castle boasted a strategic and significant position, located on the main connecting road from Montali to Agello, thus permitting a wide-range viewpoint leading to the more dominant city Perugia. In the early Fifteenth Century the entire property (approx. 70 hectares) was owned by Bartholomew I of Felcino Armanni, husband of Sismonda di Cola Bartolini, who presented Bartholomew with 800 gold florins, as an investment for the purchase of agricultural land. In 1434, having passed under Papal dominion, Pope Eugene IV (1431 – 47) granted permission to Tancredi I Bourbon di Sorbello to rebuild the Castle, giving him the title of Earl of Paciano Vecchio (Old Paciano). This privilege was invoked in 1672 by Giovan Battista della Staffa as was his hereditary right. In 1789 Anna Maria Della Staffa married Giovanni Conestabile di Terni, and the family took on the double-barrelled name of Conestabile Della Staffa. In the Nineteenth Century the Castle passed from Francesco I Conestabile Della Staffa, husband to the Princess Victoria Odelscalchi, to Misciatelli, who turned it into a refuge for livestock and a shed for agricultural equipment. In 1919/1920 the entire complex and estate was purchased by a Perugian Notary Antonio I Biavati di Filippo I, who in turn passed it on to Filippo II. He died without heirs and the Castle was therefore passed to his nephew, the son of his brother Pio, Antonio II, who has retained ownership to this day.
