Alburg Cabin Rental Photos and Description

3 bedrooms, 1 bathroom; sleeps 8

Lake waterfront cabin with spectacular views of Adirondack Mountains and Lake Champlain. The cabin, made of white cedar, is located right on Lake Champlain in Alburg, Vermont. It is about 12 years old. It only takes 45 min driving from Montreal and Burlington. The view is beautiful with breathtaking sunsets. Fall foliage is beautiful! The colors are vibrant, the air is clear and the stars are brilliant. I have several of my own watercolor paintings hanging in the cabin.

Bed Set-up: 1 queen, 1 double, 2 twins, 1 sleep sofa (double)

It has a fireplace, dishwasher, microwave, VCR, washer/dryer, grill, sewing machine, crafts, books, bikes, kayak and TV but no cable.

Dog(s) allowed. I have for use at the cabin dog bowls and toys, a large dog crate, and a medium sized dog bed.

WATER: As of 7/7/11, a new water system has been installed. Instead of a well system, there is now a lake water filtration system. The benefit is the elimination of the sulfury that sometimes came with the well water.

Golf: Alburg Country Club available to public - a 10-minute drive away

About Kathy Dean

I was the general contractor on the cabin and so am very attached to it. I live in Indianapolis.

Kathy Dean purchased this cabin in 2000

Why Kathy Dean chose Alburg

My family lived in Burlington, Vermont from 1984 - 1988, then moved back to the Midwest. I love Lake Champlain! My grandparents had a cottage on a lake which I enjoyed greatly as a child. It was on Lake Pymatuning in northwestern Pennsylvania. Because of those childhood memories, I always wanted to have a place on a lake.

May weekend 2009

  • 4 of 5
My wife and I stayed at the cabin the first weekend of May, 2009. We found the location and facilities to exceed our expectations. It seems like everyone on the street walks alot and we met many neighbors and felt welcome to share this special place. Our dogs appreciated the canine friendly atmosphere - little to no traffic and the pet friendly cabin. Everyone seems to pick up appropriately after their pets, and there was no evidence of abuse. We felt it was a privilege to stay in Kathy's vacation home. We made the short walk to Alburg Dunes State Park daily and look forward to returning in the fall.

beautiful private location right on the water

  • 5 of 5
Very homey and cozy. Located on a lovely private road which is good for walking or bike rides. Also there is a state park within short walking distance with a bird sanctuary and nice sandy beach. We really enjoyed the close proximity to the water. Unfortunately it was too windy to safely take the kayaks out - but there are two available - also a nice area near the water for a campfire or just sitting in the sun. Wish we had brought our kids along - they would have loved it.

Cabin Rental

  • 1 of 5
There were several issues with this cabin rental. Before we even got into the cabin I noticed that the blind on the door was broken from a dog jumping up on it.

There were sever issues:
Smelly sulfur water, Broken Chairs ,Dangerous last flight of stairs to the water.
disgusting dirty grill, no gas, Dishwasher full of dishes, Dryer left full of linens, No mop to mop the water soaked floor the cleaners left, Untidy closets and under sink, messy basement.,No paper towels, Not enough toilet paper (I looked through the house and found none) stayed a week, Beds looked like they were thrown together. Well problems I had to address. ,The fridge didn’t keep things cold even though it was set to max., Only one adult chair on the deck so bring your own, Can’t drink the water (it’s lake water) have to supply your own.
No wi-fi (internet if you have and Ethernet connection) gotta ask host to how connect
Bikes with flat tires
Old analog TV with digital converter and a maze of controllers with no directions.
Owner expects you to retro back to the days of Parcheesi and Yatzee for entertainment.
Don’t expect an understand host!!!
The host and I had several conversations both on the phone and via e-mail. Beware of the many shades of color she can display.
WAY OVER PRICED FOR WHAT IT WAS. Cant figure out why I should have to contact the owner about any of the things above. These problems shouldn’t have existed!!!
………………………………………………………………………………………………
OWNERS RESPONSE:
You didn't answer the question, so here's what I consider most in these cases. Mainly, you didn't tell me about the issues while you were there at the cabin. I could have told you about the internet, where the cleaning supplies were, where there was more toilet paper was, could have gotten a gas container to you, etc. Also, apparently the floor was still wet because the cleaner had just been there. He also may have felt rushed because you did come earlier in the day. And when you wrote, you didn't ask for any payment.
In light of these things, I will send you a check for $75
Thanks,
NOTE OWNER SENT TO ME INSTEAD OF CABIN CARETAKERS BY ACCIDENT:
We have to do something about the steps down to the water.
The TV and internet are what they are. I don't even advertise that I have TV, and I don't say that I have wifi (I have a hardwire internet connection). The basement is what it is, too, but if you could get rid of obviously broken stuff, like chairs and glass ETC...

Owner's Response: After my first reply after the guest's stay, more and more things were brought up, after the fact. One example, the drinking water. I have a well system which does produce sulfury smelling water but during the non-freezing months, it is not hooked up because I have a lake-water filtration system which includes UV treatment. It is definitely drinkable and not sulfury. No one else on the lake water system has complained about the water. If guests want to drink bottled water, they may do that. The cabin is built on shale, so the basement sometimes smells sulfury.

I admit that maintenance on this property is difficult, as it is remote, and has some water issues but the beauty and serenity of the property usually makes up for this.

I try my best but I'm not perfect, nor is the property. That's probably why it gets 4 stars overall instead of 5. In general, people seem to love it and have a great time there. (I have another property in Santa Fe, 184031, which has a 5-star rating. That property is much easier to manage). I believe the property is priced correctly as I always rent every summer week.

The guest called me after a few days there about a problem in the filtration system which was causing water to rush into the septic field nonstop. He called me about this, which I was so grateful for, and I called my drilling company. They came next day and fixed the problem. I just didn't understand why, when the guest called me, he didn't didn't tell me about the other problems. It would be like staying in a hotel that was missing a bed pillow and not calling the main desk.

I advertise internet but not wifi. There is a hardwire connection that works fine. Cleaning supplies (mop) were in the stairwell going down to the basement. There was extra toilet paper that was put away because large amounts seem to disappear if it is left out. The guest's view was that everything should be perfect and there should have to be no communication.

I don't advertise TV on my ad. The cabin used to receive analog TV signals but when digital came, no signal came through, even though it was said that I could receive basic channels with an antenna. I do have an antenna but no channels come through. I choose not to pay for cable TV. It IS a place conducive to playing Parcheesi or Yahtzee with your family or friends. There are tons of books in all genres, and also movies in the form of DVD's and VHS tapes, and players for these. The renter said I should have a new smart TV.

Excellent experience!

  • 4 of 5
After seeing exorbitant seasonal hotel prices in the area, my husband and I chose Kathy's cabin as our home base for our trip up to VT for the Green Mountain Marathon. The location is wonderful - quite private with beautiful views of the late - and we enjoyed the fireplace on some chilly nights. As avid cooks, we loved being able to take advantage of the local produce and meats available in the downtown Burlington farmer's market and bringing them back for dinner. All around, it was a pleasure to have some of the comforts of home to help relax before race day.

The cabin was well-maintained, perhaps some cobwebs in the tallest corners, but otherwise tidy. The water occasionally had a very slight sulfur smell, but having grown up with water filtration systems I knew what to expect: it's going to be different from "city" water no matter what. Kitchens, baths, and bookshelves were very well-stocked.

We'd certainly consider staying again, and have already recommended the cabin to others. Thanks, Kathy, for a great experience!

Vermont cabin review

  • 5 of 5
My husband, our two dogs and I stayed at the cabin in celebration of our anniversary. The private cabin was more than well stocked with supplies of all sorts, kind of like home away from home! We brought plenty of food with us and easily filled the refrigerator which already had other food in it. If we were more than two, I think we would have had a little trouble with the refrig space. The books were interesting and it was fun to check out the movie selection. We slept in the upstairs bedroom which was ok for me but my husband found his side of the bed to slope considerably. All was in good working order, except for a window blind in the br with the twin beds, and we couldn't find garbage bags so we bought some. I was impressed with the water filtration systems in the house. Excellant idea! We enjoyed the lake, the two person kayak and a campfire on the second tier of the terraced banking. It was very relaxing and we would definately consider going again.

Simply Stunning!

  • 5 of 5
Wow – what a beautiful place! I had an amazing night Friday and an incredible day on Saturday (plus the weather was perfect!). The cabin had everything we needed for a wonderful night away - beautiful views, great beach area, grill, fireplace with plenty of wood, hot shower, clean and comfortable bedrooms, and a kayak to take out on the water. Like so many of guests (from reading the guest book) I had a truly memorable time. I hope to be back for another break away soon! If you're looking for a quiet retreat, this is the place for you! Kathy is wonderfully kind and incredibly helpful. I feel so thankful to have had the opportunity to stay here!
