Secret Garden

We loved this house! Our family stayed here for our annual summer trip, and we'd love to stay again! The house is beautiful and perfectly maintained; it has that old-house charm that you get with pre-WWII houses, but with all the modern amenities - brand new dishwasher, washer/dryer, etc...and the yard is wonderful! Hidden behind a high hedge, you'd never guess that there is a large, sculpted English-style garden tucked away back there. Absolutely beautiful!

The property is an easy walk to the beach and Boardwalk; we walked there every day. We also walked into downtown Santa Cruz one day to do some shopping and visit our favorite cafe, Cafe Delmarette. The walk is a bit farther but still easily within walking distance.

We found the house very clean, and it was stocked with many useful things that other rental properties do not provide: bed linens, towels, condiments (mustard, ketchup, olive oil, etc.) Very helpful! The owner, Joan, was very helpful and thoughtful and made the whole experience easy and worry-free. She provided 2 sets of keys and 2 parking permits, which came in very handy, since our group was large enough to require two cars to transport us and all our stuff!

We have taken lots of family vacations, staying in rented houses and hotels, and this property is easily our all-time favorite! We found ourselves remarking to each other all week long, "Wouldn't it be great if this was our house and we lived here all year!" If you stay at the Secret Garden, you will feel the same way.

Happy to return!

  • 5 of 5

A happy repeat customer here! This was my second stay in this Santa Cruz home and I had just as wonderful a time as the previous summer--except this time we stayed longer, which was even better. The owner Joan is very reliable. She called to make sure we settled in OK, and responded quickly when I emailed her about even small things. Thanks again for everything!

One side note to potential future visitors, summer can be a lively time in this area, and the home next door had its share of music going. Nothing crazy in the middle of the night… actually I rather liked it. But it might not be the perfect setting for someone who needs things monastery quiet.

We stayed here 3 nights. The house was immaculate and well equipped, most meals we ate outside and enjoyed the garden.

Easy walk to the beach boardwalk and wharf. There were 4 of us girls ranging from 80 to 4 years and we all loved the time spent here and hope to return next year.

QUAINT AND PEACEFUL

  • 4 of 5

My family and I stayed 2 nights in this lovely house. My teenagers loved being just a couple of blocks from the beach and the boardwalk. It is a very safe and quiet neighborhood with a high hedge for privacy around a beautiful yard. We ate every meal - breakfast , lunch and dinner on the patio in the backyard. The kids played frisbee and board games while my husband barbequed.

I would say the only drawbacks-- the sofabed in the living room is very uncomfortable and really not usable and also that there is only 1 bathroom, but for the price you can't beat it!!

It was very clean with nice decor. The kitchen, while small, has everything you can think of in order to cook all your meals in house, which we did. And Joan was so great, so helpful. At one point the propane ran out and we were unaware of where the spare was. When I spoke with Joan about it later, she was so apologetic and I found a cash reimbursement in the mailbox the very next morning. Awesome customer service, for sure.

I would highly recommend this property. It was perfect for a family with teenagers trying to save for college tuition. There is so much to do at the Boardwalk and its all just 2 blocks away!! We’ll be back Joan, for sure!!! Thanks so much.

We just loved Secret Garden

Great place to spend summer time. So close to the boardwalk.

Nice facilities. No A/C but no problem on gruond floor. On First Floor, the house gets hot during afternoon but as soon as the evening comes, you can open the windows and fresh air comes rapidly. The BBQ is just awesome.

We've always found a parking place close to the house even if it is sometime a bit complicated.

The Blue Ray DVD reader would need to be changed because the movie is not 'smooth'...

Excellent location, great property

  • 5 of 5

A wonderful property in an excellent location. Gorgeous, huge yard which was perfect for dining outdoors and having a safe place for the kids to run around without us having to keep a constant eye on them. Owner Joan was very attentive and we appreciated her helpful instructions and signs around the house. For a small-ish house it is roomy enough. Stairs are very steep so not a good place for people with limited mobility. At first we were scared the kids (ages 4 and 5) would fall down, and there was a tumble or two, but the thick carpet helped and by the end of day 1 the kids were used to it and I wasn't worried at all. I'd say it was perfect for our needs, only improvement would be a queen or king bed. My husband and I (6'3" and 5'7") didn't fit comfortably in a full so we had to split up. No big deal though. Neighbors and evening traffic/noise died down each night by about 11pm-12am which we found acceptable. Faint screams from the boardwalk rides were actually quite fun and added to the ambiance. Trader Joe's and Safeway super close. Very pleased overall.

The Santa Cruz Beach Boardwalk is four blocks away. At the Municipal Wharf, enjoy fresh seafood, shop for souvenirs, or just take in the sights. Listen to the barking sea lions or watch the pelicans dive...plucking their dinner from the Monterey Bay. Four blocks away is Cowell's Beach -- learn to surf in one of the best spots in town...or in California, for that matter! Downtown Santa Cruz is just a ten-minute walk. Visit the beautiful shops and great restaurants for families or couples. Several movie theaters, museums and art galleries are downtown, too. Championship golf courses are just a short ride away. During the summer, one of the best ways to spend an evening is at Shakespeare Santa Cruz...outdoor theater among ancient redwoods!
