What a beautiful place! Your deck overlooks a noisy creek , a sweet yard with a bench, and trees, trees, trees. So leafy and green, you can smell the mossy earthiness. The owners provided food for the trout, who we fed almost daily from the bench. It was such fun doing this, and even watching the waterwheel, which became much more active after a hard, overnight rain which also caused the creek to rise about a foot and turn entirely to whitewater.
The outside also had a picnic area overlooking the creek, and a fire bowl that we didn't have a chance to use, but know we would've enjoyed. The interior was clean, comfortable, and homey - filled with items that showed such love for their daughter, as well as for art and humor. My nephew and his wife, both teachers, came for dinner one night and had a blast checking out the many interesting artifacts and wall art. Lots of good reading material everywhere.
We spent a day on the Parkway and stopped at Linville Falls. Went into the Mast General stores in Boone and Valle Crucis. Took 194 up to Todd, then took the Railroad Grade road for a beautimous, scenic drive that carried us almost all the way to West Jefferson, which we also explored. Took 105 through Foscoe (where I stayed on my last/first visit to Boone) down to 221, then the adventurous drive over Grandfather mountain and into charming Blowing Rock. Had dinner at Casa Rustica, which was recommended by our hosts, but where we would have gone anyway, as my nephew plays classical guitar there every Sunday evening. Beth and Jon are right, though - very good Italian food. I liked that, with all the pasta dishes, you could choose any pasta you wanted. Ambience was nice, service attentive, and prices reasonable too.
For any visit to the High Country, Troutsong is a wonderful place to come "home" to. We felt secluded and safe - hard to leave after mornings in the serene surroundings, and drawn back each afternoon to perfect evenings on the deck, in the calming silence punctuated only by the the background music provided by the mesmerizing Howard's Creek and its smaller inhabitants. You will enjoy your time here, guaranteed.
