My husband and I bought the house when we were getting married and we planned to raise our family in Kailua, but as things turned out we decided to move to Barcelona. Now we have kids who love coming to visit their grandparents on Oahu, and my mother and I manage the house as a rental. We hope you will make many wonderful memories in the house and treat it as you would your own. We enjoy sharing our little slice of paradise with you.
Nerissa Wong-VanHaren purchased this villa in 1999
Kailua is the true Hawaii -- friendly, relaxed, and natural. The beach is beautiful and sandy, the waves are calm enough to be safe, but big enough to be fun and interesting. We love the small town feel of Kailua, but also enjoy being so close (30 mins) to 'town' (Honolulu) and the variety of activities that Oahu has to offer. We love hiking Olomana or Lanikai ridge (5 mins away), carrying our longboards down to the end of the north beach to surf at a break called Castles, bodyboarding in front of the house, kayaking to the Mokulua Islands, and exploring the tidepools & natural baths, and just walking on the long, sandy beach. There are great restaurants and shopping right in Kailua, and every imaginable watersport available, from kitesurfing to outrigger canoeing, without the crowds or the touristy feel of Waikiki. We hope to move back someday!
On full moon nights, when the moon is large and low on the horizon, it lights up the beach like a searchlight. The water shimmers and sparkles, and the sand reflects and glows. It is truly magical.
One new moon night, when the beach was almost pitch dark, we went for a walk and saw tiny glowing blue specks in the sand. Little constellations of stars were under our feet, and lit up when we stepped. They were bioluminescent plankton washing ashore! Totally harmless and amazingly beautiful.
Only by staying on the beach do you have the luxury of never having to find parking and or having to lug your cooler, towels, and bodyboards from the car. You can easily take a walk at sunset, or after dark under the moon. Perhaps part of your group wants to go to the beach, but others want to lounge by the pool, and the baby needs a nap. No problem. Everyone can be happy.
I have rented a few homes on Oahu. Most of the reasonably priced homes were built in the sixties and have no central heat or air conditioning. This is important to me because these homes get musty, muggy, and uncomfortable. This home had window air conditioning in all the bedrooms which was really nice. My family was able to sleep at night comfortably. The house was very clean, the beds were comfortable and all the appliances were new.(Note to owner the dishwasher is broken. its takes hours to wash). The pool was cold but the pool boy turned up the heat and it was better. It is a large property right on the #1 beach in the world. It has all kinds of boogie boards, a barbecue and much more. it was really nice. I asked my family if they would stay here again and they all said yes.
Our family of 10 adults and 2 small children had a wonderful time at the beach house. From the personal 'meet and greet' with Mrs Wong and the caretakers until the last day, we felt that we were able to really call this our home away from home.
The setting was spectacular, to be able to have your morning coffee on the beach was truly luxurious! The grounds were well maintained and the pool was a welcome relief. The layout of the house enabled everyone to have their own space but also created much needed family time. Our grandchildren loved being able to run around the yard and playing ball with their uncles (think the uncles were worn out!).
The close proximity of the supermarkets was a pleasant surprise, an easy 10 minute walk if you didn't feel like taking the car out. We loved seeing more of the island that just the 'touristy' spots.
We will definitely come back and stay here next time, hopefully we can stay a little longer!
My family enjoyed staying at this house immensely. The beautiful Kailua beach outside the property is an incredible bonus, and the open concept kitchen, dining room and outdoor space is conducive to family enjoyment. Having the 2 refrigerators and 2 ovens in the main kitchen is truly an asset when feeding a large group. The children enjoyed having the family room for their electronics use, games, and movies while the adults could converse in the inside dining room or the outdoor area. We spent most days exploring the island, going to the Pearl Harbor Memorial, hiking, the North Shore, etc. but were grateful to return to relax around the pool. Thank you for the incredible house for our stay.
The long planning and excitement that went into a much anticipated family vacation to celebrate our 50th wedding anniversary was realized when we stayed in this lovely home and property. The size of the house, privacy, and location right on beautiful Kailua beach were perfect. Our grandchildren couldn't get enough of the waves right out the front door and when the sun went down, they swam in the beautiful pool. The little wading pool at one end of the pool was a perfect bonus for the 18 month old. Most of the meals were prepared in the newly remodeled kitchen. The two refrigerators and two ovens are a great asset when you are feeding 14. We ate many of our meals out by the pool, but were happy to have the convenience of the long table and chairs in the dining area. A portable or small island type table might make a good addition to the kitchen. During our stay we had an issue that needed repair, however, the repairman was prompt and the inconvenience minimal. Many of our days were spent at the house, but when we did venture, nothing was too far away…the Whole Foods grocery store in downtown Kailua, Honolulu, Pearl Harbor, various hiking trails, and the north shore, where we had fun experiencing Giovanni's Shrimp Truck and shaved ice. If the opportunity ever presents itself to repeat a visit to Oahu, there would be no question we would return to this property. It is obvious this house is a family intended home. Thank you Nerissa and Rita for helping our family create memories to last a life time.
Having rented condos often, we were extremely pleased to find the house everything the ad said it was...and more. It was very spacious, newly remodeled kitchen and some baths. Our family of fourteen spent 90% of our group time out by the pool, or down on the beach. The new BBQ grill made it easy to dine in, although we ate at Buzz's one evening. It is a fun place, food fine, not spectacular, though. Plenty of sand chairs and boogie boards made all the kids and we parents happy to spend hours on the beach, just beyond the yard. Everything was well taken care of and serviced. Although the list of do's and don'ts seems tedious, it is a lovely property and should be treated accordingly. I hope to return someday with the family, it was that good!
My husband and I especially enjoyed the in-law suote above the garage. good place to escape the hustle-bustle. Eventhough wr were all pretty worn out from sightseeing and the ocean. a big thrill was swimming with the sea turtles anf dolphins just off shore. No kidding!!!!!
