LOVELY APARTMENT IN LUCCA INSIDE THE WALLS!

Lucca Apartment Rental Photos and Description

Apartment, 3 Bedrooms, 2 Baths, (Sleeps 6)

Recently featured on HGTV's "House Hunters International", Casa Valeria is a luxury apartment located on the third and top floor of a restored 17th century palazzo, located in the heart of the historical centre of Lucca. The apartment includes all the modern comforts mixed with the owner's impeccable taste for an authentic Italian feel. Much of the furniture was acquired from the local antique markets of Lucca. There are wonderful views from every room including those of the walls, Duomo, rooftops and local gardens.

There are 3 bedrooms which sleep 6 people comfortably. The apartment has two lovely bathrooms, one with shower and one with bathtub/shower combo. The kitchen and living room are quite large allowing for a sense of space, even with 6 people staying in the apartment.

A large, private terrace, with 360 degree views of all of Lucca, as well as the surrounding mountains, is yours to enjoy throughout your stay. Enjoy a glass of local wine, with friends or family, as you watch the sunset turn the skies and tile roof tops of Lucca a beautiful shade of orange.

During your stay at Casa Valeria, we can arrange (in advance!) a variety of fun activities including cooking courses, home cooked meals and guided excursions such as Florence, Le Cinque Terre and Portovenere, Carrara, Forte dei Marmi Flea Market and Versilia, Chianti, San Gimignano and more. There is also an excellent language school within the walls, Koine, which offers courses in Italian language throughout the year.

WINTER 2009/2010 SPECIAL: For the months of November 2009 - February 2010, we will be offering special rates for monthly stays (up to 4 months): Please inquire directly with us!

I came to Lucca, never having heard of the little city, in October 2005 for a month, to travel Italy, taste the wines, meet and enjoy the people and explore the countryside. Little did I know that I would fall in love with this quaint little city, nestled in the heart of Tuscany, and end of buying and renovating a three bedroom, two bath flat in the heart of the ancient city centre!! It took two years to complete the sale and renovation, but I learned to love the people even more and speak the language (somewhat, even though my vocabulary consisted primarily of contractor and building terms!) and I had fun doing the job! I worked with wonderful sub contractors and a great contractor, who's cousin owned the local wine store, and who's nephew was my geometre.

I was lucky that House Hunter's International TV series heard of my adventure and ended up following me through my experience, and filmed the before and after renovation of the flat (although the decorative painting was not completed at the time of the final filming). I met some wonderful people in Lucca, included Vincenza without whose help I could not have finished and furnished my place so beautifully, and they are all still my friends, and each visit, we laugh, drink wine and toast the wonderful little town of Lucca.

I think I explain in the paragraph above, but basically I fell in love with Italy, and with Lucca! Tuscany is so beautiful, and so green and lush, and the people are so friendly, how can you not love it all!

I love the fact that I live only a few blocks from the train station, so traveling anywhere the rail system will take me is so easy and uncomplicated! The city is small enough to be able to get around easily, the wall around the city (approximately 2 1/2 miles) is a wonderful place to walk every morning and/or evening and the people are friendly and helpful. The markets are the greatest, and the antique markets once a month are so much fun, and there are so many fun finds as you search through all of the treasures that everyone brings to the city to sell! It's not far to the sea, only about 20 mins., and Florence is just 45 minutes away, and Rome is three hours by train. Everything is so close, and I have become the best Italian driver!!

Perfect apartment (well, almost)

  • 4 of 5
Overall Casa Valeria was a very good experience. It’s in a near-perfect location for cafes, restaurants, gelato shops, bars and sights. It’s near the wall, Piazza Napoleone, main cathedral, train station and bicycle rental. The location is pretty much ideal but it’s a bit close to a motorcycle parking area and main road which was an issue at night. We’d hear motorcycles buzzing loudly down the road as late as 1:00 AM. I’ll be generous and say, in hindsight, that it added to the European café-culture ambience but at the time it was tiresome.

The apartment is close to a small general store (Despar) and 25 minutes to the larger Esselunga. Local bread, cheese, food shops are all over Lucca and these are better anyway. Using the local stores puts you in touch with the Lucchese; delightful, generous people who were beyond kind. Some were initially impatient with my fumbled attempts at Italian but, when they saw I was trying, they worked with me to find the right words and did this with a willing smile. Without exception, genuinely lovely people.

The apartment is beautiful, great condition, spotless, exactly as shown in the photographs. The roof-terrace is amazing, whether for breakfast or evening cocktails. One of the best views of the city, except maybe Torre Guinigi! There are 60+ steps from street level to apartment, and a dozen more to the roof. It was challenging for my wife’s parents (both in their 80s) but they made it down and up every day so it is doable.

The apartment was comfortable and spacious (huge master bedroom). It had all the amenities but we were disappointed that the advertised A/C was only in 2 rooms (living room and 1 bedroom). Lucca was very warm, even at night. The limited A/C isn’t a big deal; we don’t expect everything to be exactly like “home” but it should be clear in VRBO that the A/C is limited.

The agent, Debora, was terrific. She could not have been more helpful. She has contacts for everything and will book restaurants for you. She was professional, kind, attentive, pleasant and a delightful ambassador for Lucca.

Overall, I’d recommend Casa Valeria. It’s not cheap by VRBO standards but you get a lot for your money. On a per-person-per-night basis it’s actually amazing value compared to a hotel.

Pros: Spectacular roof terrace; Apartment quality, space and amenities; Close to all the things you need; Terrific apartment agent (Debora).

Cons: Limited A/C; Close to noisy motorcycle parking.

Outstanding Location in Lucca

  • 5 of 5
This was our fourth trip to Italy, and this time we decided to use Lucca as our home base. Casa Valeria was absolutely perfect. We stayed for two weeks, and the apartment provided everything we needed. For the days we spent in Lucca, we walked a lot. The city is easy to traverse on foot, and before long we became familiar with the winding streets.

For adventures outside Lucca, we found a 5-minute walk to the train quite convenient. Pisa and the Cinque Terra are must-sees and reachable by train very easily. We arrived in Firenze, and through Debora, we arranged a car service to bring us to Lucca. This was a great idea. After a long flight from San Francisco, relaxing in a car for the 45-minute drive to Lucca was preferable to hauling our luggage on the train.

Maria provided a wonderful tour of Lucca the day after we arrived, and it really helped us get comfortable with the city. We also arranged a winery/olive oil tasting and tour through Maria later in our stay.

The apartment was so comfortable and convenient. The highlights for us were the roof-top terrazza, which we used every day, mostly at sunset, and the proximity to the wall. We ran, walked, and biked the wall, and even watched the Lucca marathon from our apartment. The rooms were comfortable, with everything we needed to relax and enjoy our stay. We didn't mind the walk up the stairs at all.

Late October/early November brings the Comics convention to Lucca, and large exhibition tents are set up in many of the piazzas as well as along the wall. In the future, I would probably avoid that time, since I would prefer to enjoy the piazzas without all the tents.

We would highly recommend Casa Valeria, and Lucca, to anyone wanting to really relax and enjoy Italy from the local perspective. It's large enough to have any amenity you might need, yet small enough to provide a true Italian experience. And if you go to Lucca, stay at Casa Valeria.

Wonderful Experience

  • 5 of 5
Thank you to Valerie and Debora and Maria for a wonderful experience at Casa Valeria. The apartment is spacious and light filled and very clean. The beds were very comfortable. The location is very good as it is close to the San Pietro Gate and the train station. We parked at the train station and then moved our rental to a street very close to the "steps" that go over the train tracks- in the white line area...only a five minute walk.

The three flights of stairs were exhilarating to climb but it gave us a good excuse to eat gelato and not feel guilty. We loved coming back from a day of site seeing and going up to the rooftop patio and enjoying wine and cheese and pears!

Lucca is wonderful and Maria gave us a very informative 3 hour tour. During the tour, Maria gave us recommendations for lunch and dinner which turned out to be wonderful. Please make sure to view the Palazzo Pfanner gardens (even from the wall, if you don't want to go in). Make sure to see the Volto Santo and to view many of the churches in Lucca. Near the interior canal you can view homes that are built right on top of the ruins!

The citizens of Lucca and the outskirts were tremendously kind, and helpful- probably the nicest of all the places we traveled to. The restaurants within the walls were wonderful. Shopping on Via Fillungo was fun!

Having a modern kitchen was wonderful. We had breakfast in the apartment every morning and ate dinner within the walls. Also, the use of the Washer and Dryer in the apartment is a major amenity, although washers and dryers in Italy tend to take longer than American ones.

We landed in Milan (Malpensa) and rented a car at the airport. The drive, although 3 1/2 hours, was stunning, especially while driving on A15 from the Parma area to LaSpezia area. We would recommend Lucca as a base because of the proximity to highways, trains, buses and because of the beauty and interesting things to do in the northern Tuscany area. We travelled to: (Lucca suburbs) villages of Colle di Compito and Castelvecchio to visit relatives of relatives, Pisa, Montecarlo (winery at the top of the mountain), Collodi (Pinocchio), Montecatini (traveled Finiculare), Lago Massacioccoli [Puccini's summer home is here and we took a boat ride of the lake), Viareggio and Forte di Marmi, San Gimignano, Greve in Chianti and Florence. We ran out of time in which to do more since after seven days we traveled to the Como Lakes region.

The apartment was wonderful! Thank you, Cara Valeria

Perfectly wonderful

  • 5 of 5
I have stayed all over Italy and the best places have American kitchens and bathrooms. Yes it was light, bright and beautifully decorated and located in the perfect place for easy walking to everything, but I really appreciated the great kitchen as I love to cook. I also appreciated the new feel but with an old world charm. I would stay there again in a moment.

The Best Italian Experience Ever!

  • 5 of 5
What a dream come true for all four of us! We met another couple in Italy and traveled all over, but we could not wait until our time to return to Lucca. We had all stayed in Lucca at a very nice hotel a couple of years before, but wanted to come back and rent an apartment where we could feel like we were really living in Italy...well, this is the place! Debora was a tremendous help with answering questions before we planned the trip and helping us find the right apartment for our needs. She went above and beyond to help us. We had concerns regarding the air conditioning being in one bedroom and the living room, but just as Debora said, it was fine. The weather was hot, but we closed the shutters when we left in the AM, and opened everything up in the afternoon and it was wonderful. The terrace was magnificent with 360 views of the Alps, towers and the town. It was our favorite place and we couldn't wait each day to get "home" and upstairs with a bottle of wine and put our feet up! We love to cook and we had a wonderful cooking lesson in our apartment and learned to make many Tuscan specialities...it was a definite highlight. Every morning I was the first up, put on the coffee, went into the living room, opened up the shutters and watched the locals walk their dogs, push their baby carriages and get in an early morning walk on the wall. This was on of the greatest pleasures of staying at Casa Valeria...you really feel a part of the town. You can walk to everything in Lucca in minutes, including the train station for day trips to Florence and beyond. There is a great caffe 2 blocks on the left around the corner, Roberto & Chef Sabrina, where each morning one of us walked to get a pastry for breakfast and several days we enjoyed lunch outside at the caffe...really good fish, pesto Genovese, daily specials of whatever is fresh. Casa Valeria was even better than expected, and I had seen beautiful pictures. The living room, dining room and kitchen were very spacious, the kitchen was actually huge! The living room and the entire Casa was so comfortable, we all said we felt like it was home for us immediately. Debora and Maria were so helpful and explained everything you could possibly want to know about the Casa on arrival and then left for us a fabulous booklet that had tons of information on everything from grocery stores to markets to custom trips, etc...
Well, I guess by now you know that none of us would ever stay anywhere in Lucca without the guidance of D

Owner's Response: Thank you so much Margaret! We do hope that people enjoy the flat in Lucca as much as we do when we are able to take time to visit. Debora is a dream, and does a great job of being a hostess and friend when people stay here at Casa Valeria. I am so very lucky to have her helping me here in Lucca.

The review was wonderful, and thank you so much. Do come back again, and bring your friends with you when you come!

Casa Valeria, Lucca at its Finest

  • 5 of 5
Casa Valeria proved to be a comfortable and strategic location from which to enjoy all that is Lucca at its finest. Our party included three couple and we have the space to enjoy both our privacy aa well as the setting to enjoy meals together. The apartment is well appointed and the kitchen has all that is necessary for a meal. The livingroom furniture is very comfortable and is located at the corner of the building and benefits from wonderful cool afternoon breezes at least in May. All bedrooms had exceptionally comfortable beds. We also benefited from having a washer and dryer available in the apartment. Although the rooftop patio is a plus, there was no shade available to make staying outside during the day comfortable.

We also found the winery tour to be an exception experience and that was arranged through Lucca Holiday Rentals. Casa Valeria is about location, location and location and it is bcomplemented by comfort, comfort and comfort! We would return again in a heartbeat!

Thank you Deborah and Maria for your communications and follow through with everything!!
