My Extended Stay at Redbird Cottage

  • 5 of 5

I recently relocated to the Muskegon area from Indianapolis, In. During the time it took for me to start my new job here and look for a house to purchase I stayed in the Redbird Cottage for the months of March and April 2013. Moving in was a breeze, the cottage was very well maintained with all of the amenities that I could possibly need and VERY, VERY clean. Jane S was fantastic to work with and made the entire process very easy for me. She offered me some insight to the neighborhood and Muskegon area. The neighbors were very pleasant and welcoming. Everyone had a smile, a wave or a "hello" at each encounter. The cottage was very quiet at night and I enjoyed many restful evenings. The high speed internet worked very well and kept me connected to family via email as well as allowing me to dive right in to work at night for my new position.
My family came to stay with me for a week during their spring break in April. They really enjoyed the beach that was just a couple of blocks away. I wish it could have been a little warmer so we really could have taken advantage of the setting. We played board games (Yatzee was their favorite) and watched a couple of the movies that were provided at the cottage.
I would recommend the Redbird cottage for anyone that would like a week away to unwind in a quiet comfortable setting, or to anyone that had a longer stay similar to my relocation. The cottage provided me all the comforts of my home as I truly enjoyed my stay.

BIG DISPPOINTMENT

  • 1 of 5
  • Submitted: Jul 11, 2013
  • Stayed: Jun 2013
We were terribly disappointed upon our arrival. The cabinets and light switches were sticky and dirty. So we had to clean. There were stains on the couch and ottoman. When I went to cook supper I found the pans to be old and flaking their Teflon coating. The outdoor grill grates were rusted so bad the center had a hole in it. There was no phone and we had no internet connection while we were there. Upon inspecting the beds for bed bugs, we found lots of cracker and chip crumbs on the sideboards of the master bed frame and an X-rated magazine under one of the twin beds. (There were no bed bugs, we just check when we are traveling.) The master bed was also at a slant...we had to sleep where your feet would normally be to keep the blood from rushing to our head. No kidding!! The pedestal sink in the main bathroom would drain very slowly and it took quite a while to get the water to a warm temperature.

The owner lives near by and she did stop by one day to check in on us, however we were not there. She wants you to call her immediately if there is anything that concerns you. How do you call someone with a list like that? It would have been extremely uncomfortable. We ended up leaving halfway through our vacation.
Owner's Response: Thank you for renting our cottage home. We are sorry you were disappointed.

We regret that you did not contact us and that we were not able to see you when we called on you at the cottage. We address concerns immediately when we are told about them. Our Agreement asks all guests to contact us immediately with any concerns so we can take corrective action.

Thank you for confirming that we DO NOT have bedbugs. (No one has ever implied that we do.)

SCHEDULED ACTIONS:
The coach and ottoman are scheduled to have the cushions recovered at the end of the season. They have been steam cleaned, although some slight 1-inch "shadow stains" show.

We have made an appointment with the plumber to check the alleged main bathroom sink slow drain.

WE REFUTE ANONYMOUS FALSE ALLEGATIONS:
We have gleaming pots and pans and lids in very good condition, and there are no Teflon flakes. See photos.

One day after receiving this review, we inspected the outdoor BBQ grill. There was NO RUST on the grate, and NO HOLE in the middle of the grate or anywhere on it. We pushed down hard on the grate, and it was sturdy.

We disclose in our ads and Agreement that we do not provide a land line phone, and we recommend guests bring their own cell phone.

We provide high speed internet and free WIFI throughout the house and yard. Occasionally, the WIFI link may disconnect. If and when guests let us know about this, we drive over and fix it or else tell the guests how to do it. If no one tells us about the problem, we can't fix it.

Our goal is to provide a charming, comfortable, clean rental cottage home away from home. Our many excellent reviews confirm that we meet this goal consistently. Our private, professional housekeeper has received many personal Thank You notes over the years she has cleaned for us.

The only magazines, brochures, and maps we provide are about Muskegon and West Michigan, and we get them from the Muskegon Visitors' Bureau and the Muskegon Lakeshore Chamber of Commerce, of which we have been a member since 2005. Sometimes a guest will leave a National Geographic magazine for the next visitor.

We provide extra pillows in case guests need to elevate their head in bed.

Our On-Demand water heater system allows guests to easily dial their preferred water temperature. Dial the temperature lower for children or higher for adults. All water systems have a delay in delivering hot water to the spigot.

Beautiful Cottage to Escape From Life

  • 5 of 5
  • Submitted: Jul 28, 2011

A couple friends and I rented this charming cottage for three days mid-July as a quick Summer retreat from life.

The entire place is spotless, so clean we had no qualms whatsoever using the kitchen, bathroom, bedrooms, etc.

Living spaces are cozy and comfortable. Backyard large and inviting, green and landscaped, with a good sized picnic table and a firepit. It is semi-private, though it does share a walkway with the property behind the house. The driveway is shared and the path from their to to the entrance of the other property goes through the backyard, around the firepit, but isn't overly intrusive.

Not too far from the beach. Walkable, if you don't mind a 10-minute stroll, and one somewhat busy road.

Owner was extremely helpful and pleasant, providing more accurate driving directions than Google, and exuding an extremely welcoming and friendly demeanor.

The kitchen was fully stocked for preparing meals, with a decent amount of cookware, and some general cooking supplies (a few herbs and spices available).

The neighborhood itself seemed a bit rundown as we drove in, some neighboring houses seemingly abandoned, but the property itself shines like a beacon amidst those darkened plots.

I would recommend this location to anyone, especially families. Very close to shopping and the beach and other daytime activities. And very conducive to relaxing afternoons and evenings either indoors or out.
