Addison Cottage Rental Photos and Description

One Master Bedroom, a single built -in bed, and double sofa bed in living room

Castaway Cottage

Picture a place where fresh seafood abounds. . . where you can step out the back door, enjoy the salty scent of sea, and pick fresh vegetables and flowers right from your own private garden overlooking the water.

As you dine on this delicious fare, you will see unforgettable sunsets while savoring some of the freshest food on earth - harvested that very day.

Imagine all this in the comfort of a cozy, romantic cottage where simple pleasures make time stand still.

Simple pleasures like sitting on a new sofa, fresh coffee in hand, watching the morning tide come and go through the panoramic windows overlooking the harbor.

Or a stroll down the shore road to see clam diggers out on the mud flats harvesting the clams you will eat later that day.

Or a walk on the beach where the only sign of another person is the sea art left behind in the sand.

Imagine having a lunch with you – crab meat sandwiches would be nice, and stopping along the beach to gaze out at the islands and ocean while sampling its fruits.

A trip to the wharf to pick up the clams and to watch the lobster boats come in with their haul. Picture trying to choose between steamers and lobsters and deciding to have both!

Back at Castaway Cottage the lobster pot awaits as well as all the accoutrements needed. Now that dinner is planned imagine cozying up in the lighthouse room for some afternoon reading. There's room for two on the built-in bench bed.

Amazing how the sea air causes sleepiness - and enhances the appetite. Thank goodness for the clams AND lobster!

Visualize heading out to the garden in the late afternoon sunshine, after a good rest, to select vegetables and flowers for tonight's table. Can you see a bottle of Seaglass Sauvignon Blanc with this meal?

After sunset imagine lighting the pellet stove with push button ease, making up a tray of tea and dark chocolate laced with blueberries, cranberries and almonds and settling in to watch a favorite show on PBS.

Picture yourself ascending the stairs and nestling into new beds with new quilts – washed and scented with the same fresh air you have enjoyed all day.

The only thing you are likely to hear, apart from the light sound of waves lapping on the shore, will be the early morning bahing of some sheep at a farmhouse two hundred yards away, or the light rumbling of the lobster fishermen headed for the wharf to catch your next dinner of lobster.

A stay at Castaway brings rest, relaxation and comfort. Just read the reviews. We even have a housekeeper who keeps the place spotless. Her name is Mrs. Hughes.

This charming ocean side cottage overlooking Eastern Harbor has clear water views and easy access to the water's edge for boat launching or beach combing via a 60 yard shore road.

Located in an isolated fishing village, the cottage is only ninety minutes northeast of Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park and thirty minutes southwest of Machias.

The cottage has delightful gardens stocked with shasta daisies, rose campions and pansies (to name a few). There is garden furniture on the lawn overlooking the flowerbeds and the ocean.

Equipped with all modern conveniences (oil central heating, washer, dryer, flat screen TV, microwave, coffee maker and blender) the cottage is very comfortable. It It sleeps from two to five.

Sleeping Arrangements: There is a master bedroom upstairs with two twin beds which are pushed together for greater coziness, there's a built-in bed in the lighthouse room downstairs, as well as new sofa bed in the sitting room.

About Alan and Brenda Jepson

Alan and I are film makers for Maine PBS. I just love South Addison and have been coming here since I was 9 months old to spend summers with my grandparents. In 1986 we bought this wonderful cottage - a true romantic getaway and we have been renting it out ever since.

Alan and Brenda Jepson purchased this cottage in 1986

Why Alan and Brenda Jepson chose Addison

Mooseneck, as the area is known, is really magical. The sea air sharpens the appetite and at the same time has a relaxing effect. Folks tell us they sleep so well here. We have added a lot to the cottage over the years - original paintings done by local listed artists and quilts made by local crafts people. The house is light and airy. The views are stunning. It is a great place to rest and relax. We are happy to share it with others so they have the same happy experience here that I have had for nearly sixty years!

What makes this cottage unique

This cottage is very charming and even quaint. It feels like taking a trip into an enchanted place as soon as you walk through the door. I stayed here as a child and so it has many special memories for me. We have included features like a delightful flower garden overlooking the water, as well as organic vegetable garden to enhance the dining experience. Imagine fresh lobster, Maine potatoes, freshly picked vegetables of your choice from a garden with ocean views, and fresh blueberry pie for dessert. These are just some of the things that give our visitors special memories of this cottage. Downeast Maine is such a beautiful place. We provide visitors in advance with a copy of our DVD we made for Maine PBS about the Downeast area (there is a clip on this site) and we give our guests a Downeast Calendar we make each year. It reminds them of the wonderful vacation they had at our cottage since many of the photos are from this location. We hope you have a chance to enjoy it too!

Guestbook comments from the manager

We loved our visit in your delightful home! What an amazing place to celebrate our daughter's 21st birthday. The view is beautiful - even through the fog! Your garden was a great location for breakfast. The house is comfortable, and it was so nice to come in and see the exquisite beach roses on the bureau and table. Thank you! We hope to come back to rest, play, read and laugh in your home on the sea in beautiful South Addison.

Clean, beautiful cottage in gorgeous location

  • 5 of 5

This beautiful cottage far exceeded our expectations in many areas - location, cleanliness, charm, amenities etc. Unfortunately we were unable to stay there beyond eating a single picnic meal in the dining area, as we arrived just after Hurricane Arthur had made landfall and left the entire area without power. Thankfully, the owners Brenda and Alan found a functional room for us at a roadside motel in a nearby town for the night - no small feat as the any place with power was rapidly filling to capacity.

To our great disappointment, the power company posted on their website that it would be several days before power could be restored in the area. This meant that the cottage could not be occupied since there was no electricity and therefore no water as the supply is drawn from a well via an electric pump. As the motel could not accommodate us for an indeterminate number of days due to huge demand in the area, and there was no availability anywhere else in the vicinity, we had to find an alternative rental in another area for our stay. As luck would have it the power was restored sooner than expected, but unfortunately we had already committed to a new property for the week (minimum stay is 7 days) and were unable to change our plans.

Throughout the process, we stayed in communication with Brenda and Alan who were very understanding and agreed to refund our rental fees even though they were under no obligation to do so. They were extremely helpful in general and very responsive to any questions from us, even before we arrived. We are very hopeful to be able to stay in the cottage at a future date, as it truly is a little piece of paradise.

A Slice of Heaven On Earth

  • 5 of 5

A slice of heaven we saw rounding the bend on path to pristine village and cottage! An overview for nature lovers; Eastern Harbor island hosting Bald Eagles, shore birds, lobster boats, clam diggers ducks, WOW sunsets. An idyllic village of seaside vintage cottages, well kept flower/veggie gardens, fishing dock, tiny church invited all faiths, and walking paths all around. A step back in time;best kept secret to relax, a place to recoup, reap joy from nature! Fresh lobster/clams caught before our eyes which no restaurant offers such freshness, magnificent vistas, peaceful surroundings; what a blessing!

The delighful compact cottage provided all needs. Watered and tasted of owners orderly veggie garden, and great info clear to plan activities. Can not keep this secret! Coming back!

Ideal Downeast Maine Experience!

  • 5 of 5

This was our 2nd visit to this cottage. We absolutely love it here! It is so peaceful and picturesque. Beautiful walks from the rugged coast to the forested paths to quiet beaches. You can't beat the lobster prices down the street at the wharf and the sunsets are SPECTACULAR! We can't wait to come back again and again!

Cottage Getaway

  • 5 of 5

An excellent choice for a seaside getaway! I enjoyed my stay so much. The cottage is so comfy and neat, and the views from the windows that face the harbor are just stunning at any time of the day. Everything is available in this well equipped and quaint cottage. My favorite times were morning coffee/ breakfast, lunch or dinner enjoyed with the ever changing views. So many neat ares to walk or bike and places to explore. The village locals are authentic and friendly. You feel very relaxed and welcomed. I will absolutely return as often as possible to this amazing Maine jewel of a location.

Great time downeast...

  • 5 of 5

My husband and I took a "mini" vacation in October and chose Maine as a destination we had never visited. We were afraid we were going to miss the Fall color, but the scenery was absolutely beautiful. We explored the coast during the day, and retired to this wonderful little cottage in the evening where we were able to relax in front of the cozy pellet stove. The cottage is homey and well-equipped, the view is amazing. We enjoyed the beautiful sunsets over the bay; the peace and quiet of the area, the authentic feel of the neighborhood. I would love to visit again and experience Maine during a different season.

Our stay at Brenda's was excellent. The area, South Addison, was very private and the few people we did see were friendly. The house itself was a good size for the two of us, and everything was clean and in good working order. We spent most of our time in the back room, which had high ceilings and huge windows facing the water. There was also a computer which was helpful in planning our day trips. Brenda was extremely responsive to any questions we had about local activities, and she found answers when she didn't know them off-hand. She directed us to bike rentals in Machias, and a beautiful old converted railway trail nearby. Also, we found a small restaurant in Jonesport, Tall Barney's, with a pleasant owner and delicious homemade food. I would absolutely recommend this property to a friend, or rent again if we get the time off in the future.
